The race for House speaker is over

The race for the Democratic House caucus nomination for speaker is over.

Mark Larson of Burlington has pulled out of the race, leaving Shap Smith of Morrisville to accept the nomination Saturday from the 95-member Democratic caucus. That also means he's sewn up the election, which officially takes place when the House reconvenes on Jan. 7.

Also, Janet Ancel of Calais decided to pull out of the race for House Democratic Leader last night, so that gives the job to Floyd Nease of Johnson, currently assistant House Democratic Leader.

Both of the candidates who have withdrawn sounded upbeat and supportive of the winners. No hard feelings.

I've got to say I'm surprised. You've never removed a comment before. Does this signal that the Free Press is actually going to start enforcing its terms of service?

Frankly, I was looking forward to seeing the Anonymous poster trying to defend the homophobic remark they or some other Anonymous poster made.

I guess I can understand removing my post that included quoting the offensive remark, but why the posts that didn't? And why leave up the post by Anonymous 1:49? Without the proper context, it's pretty useless.

But kudos for taking the bull(ies) by the horns and starting the process of restoring at least a minimum level of civility to this blog.

Still, it is a bit out of character for her.

She usually just confines herself to deleting mine.

Nameless-nitwit nation can post my name, address, phone, e-mail, offer google-map directions to our place while threatening me and my wife and kids by name and calling us every name in the book with impunity, but, evidently, that's different.

You can only offend an anonymous poster or go over the line in Yiddish slang.

Apparently, she's under the impression that glockenspiel is Yiddish for Mother Focker as in Ben Stiller's mother in "Meet the Fockers" and addressing some nameless-nitwit by Baltimore Sun Columnist Peter Schmuck's last name is the end of the world.

Clearly, she missed the Schmuck-Fuchs Engagement Announcement in the NYT a few years back.

From all accounts, the bride was radiant and the groom was one lucky Mr Schmuck.

Indy, it's like this. As registered posters with actual screen names, our names are HIGHLIGHTED, BOLD, BLUE, UNDERLINED and easier to flag than just plain old black and white anonymous posts.

Given the sheer number of them, anonymous posts tend to blend together after a while and Terri and her Freeps Friends would have to check the IP Addresses or actually read the posts to see if they were beyond the pale, who posted what, and call it both ways.

That would entail them taking it off automatic pilot and making an honest, concerted effort to call it both ways.

Yeah, like that's gonna happen.

There's your rhyme and reason. It's easier to just delete the posters with actual names than read nameless-nitwit nonsense or concern themselves with content, context and silly stuff like that.

I mean, c'mon. It's not like they're in a business where that kind of stuff applies.

Upon further review, you're claiming that my identifying an anonymous poster who: claims a legislator gay by name before going on to claim that just because said legislator "probably doesn't self-identify by name, but that doesn't mean he isn't" as if the burden wasn't on the accuser to substantiate their allegation, but on the legislator, himself, to prove that he isn't gay - again, irrespective of the fact that said anonymous poster has never provided any evidence that they were in the first place.

In other words, SOP in nameless-nitwit nation.

Moving right along, evidently unsatisfied with the depth of the grave they'd dug themselves, said anonymous poster digs himself in a bit deeper with an oafish attempt to turn the tables by rhetorically asking,

With all of his "little fella" comments and calling men "crazy lady" I'd say it's pretty clear JW has some problems dealing with issues of what it is to be a man and gender roles in general.

For a guy like that a gay man who does not fit some ugly negative stereotype must be pretty threatening. Hades, all of the real world must terrify him. That’s why he spends all his time being the biggest troll on the net.

Undoubtedly he thinks he is the ultimate example of what it is to be a REAL MAN.

If it makes you feel any better John was just a little on the fey side. Pretty damned amusing for a man his size. He was a nice guy and almost everyone liked him.

Okay, some of us get it, Coop. You're making a big point about anonymity. And you're not insulting anyone, because they're not real people. They're fictitious people.

It still drags the level of discourse way down. And calling our elected officials names doesn't shed much light either. It doesn't add anything to the debate to say that all Republicans (or all Democrats) are slime. And it's not all that interesting.

If we stick to the logic, and this goes for everybody, there's nothing wrong with anonymity. People have good reasons for remaining anonymous.

One thing I'd suggest is moderating the site. Moderated sites like VT Tiger make it tough for rapid fire exchanges that deteriorate quickly. Because it might be a while before your comment goes up and you can realistically only comment a few times, you tend to want to make the most of it. Looks like Margolis's new site is similar. For those tired of the vitriol, let me recommend those sites. GMD isn't trollish, but they can get snarky real quick there if you disagree. VDB doesn't allow comments, apparently. Blurt's got some political stuff from Shay Totten that's pretty good. Miss Freyneland.

School Buses tend not to last longer on bad roads, but if you're doogie and ya can bash teachers and blame it on education and the property tax instead of taking responsibility for your own failed policies, inaction and incompetence, who gives a damn about the facts when ya can just tell the loons what they wanna hear.

Face it, outside of the doogie/dubie debacle, it's tough enough for intelligent, skilled, educated, experienced, qualified and competent people to get decent jobs, so, unless they're still in one piece and can reenlist, the knuckle-draggin', take back vermunt trash comprisin' the gop-slime base don't have a prayer, but they don't have to know that when ya can just trash teachers and blame the VSEA for your incompetence.
