The race for the Democratic House caucus nomination for speaker is over.
Mark Larson of Burlington has pulled out of the race, leaving
Shap Smith of
Morrisville to accept the nomination Saturday from the 95-member Democratic caucus. That also means he's sewn up the election, which officially takes place when the House reconvenes on Jan. 7.
Also, Janet
Ancel of Calais decided to pull out of the race for House Democratic Leader last night, so that gives the job to Floyd
Nease of Johnson, currently assistant House Democratic Leader.
Both of the candidates who have withdrawn sounded upbeat and supportive of the winners. No hard feelings.
