Wheels on the bus

Are the wheels coming off the bus on the legislative session?

Today featured a dust-up between IBM's John O'Kane and Senate President Pro Tem Peter Shumlin over Vermont Yankee. With credit to VPR, here is the exchange:

O'Kane "Money has time value, and you're changing the time..

Shumlin: "We are not asking for the money. You're lying about that. We are not asking for the money. The bill says..."

O'Kane: "Peter, that is.. You just called me a liar.."

Shumlin: "I said you're not telling the truth about that, John."

O'Kane: "You called me a liar. That is unacceptable. You're the president of the Senate, and you're calling me, a representative of the largest employer..."

Shumlin: "You're representing what is not true, John, to the public..".

Then Gov. Jim Douglas issued a statement:

"I’ve called IBM to let them know that the disrespect and contempt displayed by Senator Shumlin today does not in anyway reflect the point of view of the State of Vermont."

Meanwhile, on the economic stimulus front, legislative leaders created a committee that will study the governor's proposal released Saturday. Here is the paragraph from their news release that indicates they are "dubious" through their use of "quotes" around the words "economic stimulus," yet they want on the other hand to show that they knew before Douglas did that the economy was tanking and were trying to do things about it.

"The Committee on Economic Recovery and Opportunity will also review the
Administration’s “economic stimulus” plan to assess how it will
impact Vermonters’ lives today and for years beyond the current budget
cycle. Governor Douglas’ announcement of his economic growth
initiative last week signals that he has begun to understand the extent
to which the recession is hitting Vermont families. We are pleased that
he has included ideas that have been offered by the legislature and that
have been in rejected by the Governor's Office in the past."

You know how the wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round? I don't know if that's true once the wheels come off the bus.

- Terri Hallenbeck

Comments:
As the Titanic slips even more rapidly into the water, Captain Shumlin assures all passengers that he is still in charge.

Better question, Terri: Who's driving this bus, and why did everybody wait 'till it went over a cliff before they decided to put thier seat belts on?

Once again, Sen Shumlin embarrasses Vermont.

Where do we send $$ to Daryl Pillsburys campaign to unseat this fool? GO DARYL!!

Shumlin has lifted a page from the JWcoop playbook. If you can't win the argument on fact, do it with insults.

He clearly hasn't mastered the entire vocabulary yet. He didn't yet use 'bupkis', 'factually-challenged', 'gop-slop' or 'deducebag'.

If, as Shumlin said, the bill does not ask for the money , then O'Kane is lying; ie, misrepresenting the truth.

If you don't want to be called a liar, then don't misrepresent the facts. "Spin" is nothing more than
lying because it misrepresents the
facts. We have become inured to this because we have been sold the idea that facts are relative to point of view. They are not.

To the residents of Essex, do you suppose your taxes might increase if IBM moves out of state because they do not want to pay 40% more in utility rates?

Do you suppose that Essex residents are not already subsidizing IBM?
Why should a company which would leave an environmental mess for the state and its taxpayers not be required to be held responsible for the clean-up? Maybe you and your town would like to absorb these costs?

If IBM is a liability to Essex, there are a few towns that would love to take that burden off your back.
Peter, you can't be serious!

Cool. Chase the one significant technology player out of our state. I am sure we can offset the tax loss with our maple syrup business.

Vermont's "ace in the hole" is the carbon credits we will be selling.

Are there any more graduates from Bernie's EC101 class that want businesses to leave because they are a burden?

Strange. Douglas wasn't quite so concerned about O'Kane's feelings when he uncerimoniously tossed him off the state's Public Oversight Commission. Political whores will do anything to make themselves look better I guess.

Gov Doesless is just an opportunistic political animal.

(1) Has Douglas chased any businesses out of Vermont?

(2) Has Douglas raised the taxes of Vermonters?

(3) Did Douglas warn about passing a "reform" bill that would ultimately cost Vermont taxpayers millions when overturned by the Supremes?

(4) Has Douglas reneged on done deals with businesses like Entergy?

(5) Has Douglas insulted any prominent business people in the state that provide good jobs for working Vermonters?

(6) Has Douglas attempted to reduce the size of Vermont's bloated state work force?

(7) Has Douglas tried to rein in the radical "no growth" crowd like ANRC and CLF?

O.K. - now substitute Shumlin's name in place of Douglas and ask yourselves the same questions.

There is no need for public officials to throw around insults like "liar." It's as if the liberal echo chamber is so used to calling everyone they disagree with every insulting name in the book that Shumlin forgot to turn the partisan hatred switch off when he was in public.

Disagree with O'Kane. Correct him. Debate him. But it is simply immature and irresponsible to personally insult the representative of such a respected and important part of our (dwindling) non-ag, non-tourist economy. Reprehensible and unforgivable.

Do folks not understand how tenuous our states economic situation is, as the Dem supermajority demonstrates over and oer again that it has no plan other than to recommend the impeachment of Bush?!

Jim Douglas disagreed with O'Kane about some decisions he had made on the POC that didn't sit well with our governor. He didn't correct or debate him, he tossed him out the door. Talk about immature.

NEK

I was speaking o the costs of environmental cleanup after Vermont Yankee decommissions. Will you and your town accept the bill for this?
The state shouldn't have to either.
That was the point of the discussion that led to the comment by Shumlin.

Barre Boy

Tell Mr. Cheney about politeness to the opposition. Recommend that he clean up his mouth, then you can be
holier-than thou about polite discourse.

Dealing honestly with others is at least as important as dealing politely with them. Twisting the intent or the meaning of legislation to raise support against it is hardly honest or polite.

Anon 10:48
A decommissioning fund of $425 million is already set up in a trust for clean up. What S.373 requires is for an additional clean up of $400 million. This is an arbitrary amount that Shumlin pulled out of the air for this bill. Your concern about clean up should be satisfied with this amount. Obviously no one wants to pay for someone else's environmental mess but assessing someone twice the amount needed is just a ploy to force Vermont Yankee to close.

Yeah, let's get stuck having to bail out VY just like we had to bail out Bear Stearns and Enron. These GOP lovers must love giving their money to corporate America. I don't.

Enron bailout? They went out of business. Maybe that is a bailout in VT terms but not to me.

Bear Sterns was purchased by JP Morgan, not bailed out by the Gov't. The Fed did a bridge loan to JP Morgan but expects repayment. I am not sure that is a bailout. They could have let Bear Sterns fail but the impact to the Gov't of a failure was much greater than providing a loan. Seems like a market based financial decision made by the Fed, not a government entitlement effort.

You would prefer to close Vermont Yankee and let our electric rates increase 30%-40%. It's nice to know some people don't have to worry about where their next meal is coming from!
We bailed out Bear Stearns- not sure we should have but I certainly would not have done it without the CEO forfeiting his $22 million bonus- I think that is/was criminal.
We did not bail out Enron, the poor investors were the losers and the officers went to jail, except Ken Lay who died. Their energy dealings all took place during the Clinton years but were brought to justice during Bush's term.
While you are accusing the GOP, don't forget about Terry McAuliffe, a Clinton crony, who invested $100k in Global Crossing and cashed out 2 years later with $18 million- eventually leaving stockholders high and dry.

Do these people that constantly attack Entergy or IBM even have jobs? (I note that they seem to blog all hours of the day) My guess is that they are either naive students that have been spoon-fed the anti-American pablum by their "professors" or layabouts living either off the dole or their daddy's trustfund (created by the businesses they love to hate). Sort of like jw clones. Even worse, when the US is in one of it's cyclical downturns, what do we send to Washington but a know-nothing demagogue like BS (Bernie Sanders)! This is when he is in his glory, ranting and raving to empty chambers about "the rich", oil prices (which he has no solution to), or NAFTA (a democrat initiative signed by Clinton)!

TAKE BACK VERMONT!!!

10:49: Nice non sequitur. Guess what -- Cheney was wrong, too, as far aas I'm concerned. Now what say you?

The coarsening of our public discourse is leading us down a very scary trail.

Maybe they're just old farts like yourself Bubba. Obese, bitter and not long for this world (thank God).

This is scarey....usually everything Shumlin does has a political motive
This time I think he was just plain overboard
If and whenever Shumlin runs for anything outside of Windham Cty this will jump up and take a huge bite out odf his liberal a$$

The Tuskegee study was very sad rl j. However, I don't believe that it ever floated around as an unproven conspiracy theory until it was finally proven. It was conducted out in the open.

The problem with these conspiracy theories is that they require large numbers of people to be involved and keep their pie-holes shut. And we all know that is simply not possible.

Shap will fix it when he becomes Speaker

Awww man why did y'all have to go and provoke him like that?

On the night of February 25th 1994, a Jewish American Zionist physician decided to materialize the dream of the typical Zionist movement of annihilating the Arab existence in Palestine. Baruch Goldstein prepared for the move. It was during Ramadan when Dr. Goldstein decided to execute his old plan of vengeance.

At that time of the holy month of Ramadan, there were many people who flocked the Abraham Mosque to perform their prayers. Goldstein passed two army checkpoints at the dawn of February 25, 1994 from the northeastern gate of the mosque near privy. That privy could be the reason why Goldstein decided on that gate because he, probably, received his contemplation about Arabs from the Rabbis of Kach in Kiryat Arab where the Arabs were described as the demons of the privy. [Talmud - Mas. Kiddushin 72a ''Shew me the Ishmaelites.'-'They are like the demons of the privy.''] The privy of the mosque is important not only because it has two Israeli army checkpoints on its nearby mosque's gate, but also because it is surrounded by Israeli army posts from the east and army patrols in the west. So Dr. goldstein was acting from the deepest parts of the Zionistic ideology in liquidating the demons. But in this case and as a typical Zionist, shooting from the back was the style. Dr. Goldstein walked at least 100 yards in the mosque before he decided to choose the exact location to liquidate his demons. Dr. Goldstein positioned himself at the last row of the main hall, just opposite to the Imam's place (Manbar.) The position was not arbitrary not only because it enabled him to shoot directly at the largest number of the backs of the worshippers but also because it was supposed to have enabled him to get a fast escape or protection from the Israeli soldiers who were scattered right behind him in the northern hall "the plate" of the mosque.

Dr. Goldstein thought about the best moment to execute the plan: maximize the number of casualties and secure the escape or rescue. The best moment, of course, was when the Muslim worshippers knelt on the floor with their backs towards Dr. Goldstein.

Learn the truth. Because Bubba and Shumlin are going to continue hiding it from you.

And your point would be....?

Ya never have to scratch a gop too hard to find an Anti-Semitic slimeball.

Gee, ya gonna start citing the protocols of the elders of Zion now, schmuck!

There's just never enough anonymous, anti-Semites spewing psychotic slop in the name of God and Country.

Then again, like Hamas, Hezbollah and the Nazis, without Anti-Semitic Scum who fancy themselves to be Soldiers of God, Gops and the klan are out of business.

Take your ignorant, anonymous slop, hop the rat line to Argentina and tell your story walkin', schmuck.

Gai Tren Zich!

Look at the facts, JWMoron.

1) Larry Craig.
2) Eliott Spitzer
3) Baruch Goldstein
4) Bohr Niels Henrik David
5) Jeff Gannon

A fetus is not the same individual as its mother. This can be shown by DNA testing, no philosophy is necessary. Argue if you must, but that's just a fact.

If a nazi takes a dump in a privy and wakes up the next morning as a nazi, the argument still holds.

Wake up and smell the potato latkes, fool.

The libs in Vermont won't tell you the truth. Too busy arguing about potholes and healthcare scandals.

That's true. But next time we won't pay for VT Yankee's sins with a spy in a privy. We'll be paying in shekels.

shekles, dollars, euros, wampum. s'all the same in the end. you can pay with beef bullion if you want to.

In the end you have to pay. That will be the legacy of James R. Douglas.

Won't matter to him. He'll move back to his family cottage in the Hamptons ... and leave us to pay the pipper.

Pay the pipper, eh?

Dismissed.

Save Vermont - Impeach Shumlin!

Coopy,

Great playbook execution....

insult, insult, insult....no facts, no substance, no civility....a quick dismissed and on to your next tirade.

You are a pro. How would we get by without you?

Seems like the leftists in this country are the ones selling out Israel, doesn't it? The chief apologist for Hamas and the rest of the terrorists sure seems to be jw's old pal Jimmy Carter. And I don't know who the previous nutcake anti-Israel bloggers are, but I'll bet they sure aren't Republicans! Sound more like your basic downtown Burlington progs.

Let's hope that "Brass Knuckles" Floyd is successful in his bid for Speaker. He and Shumlin would make quite the pair.

"shekles, dollars, euros, wampum. s'all the same in the end. you can pay with beef bullion if you want to."

When the government starts forcing citizens to expose themselves to the terrors of the natural world, then you'll see.

Try getting healtcare when all of our money is tied up in Israeli missles.

Try protecting our borders when all of our money is tied up in a Clinton-esque rampage in the Persian Gulf.

Jim Douglas isn't there for us. He's there to obscure clear and reasonable facts.

Dismissed.

You're the one without evidence. You accuse people of anti-semitism just because I bring up the name Baruch Goldstein?

Sound like I hit a sore spot.

Wake up and smell the matzo, schumck.

Back to topic at hand--
Sen Shumlin is playing Russian Roulette with the future of Vermont- both with our energy and our largest employer. If we had an extension cord we could plug into an energy source that would even come close to Vt Yankee's cost it would be an issue worth debating but that source has not been invented- all the wind, wood chips and hydro will not replace 1/3rd of VT's needs. Conservation, although commendable and needed, will not fill the void.
Shumlin should be sent to the corner of the Senate with his dunce hat and placard "I'm Sorry IBM".

Hey all you Republican lovers (and self-proclaimed protecters of the Vermont way of life). How do you feel about the Free Press outsourcing its ad design to India? This will cost working Vermonters their jobs. It also takes money out of the Vermont economy.

Who am I kidding. You could probably give a good S*^t.

You make a good point- based on economies of scale BFP ads to India = Loss of IBM and VT Yankee.
Let's get real!

and Coopy- what??

Again, just how is Baruch Goldstein relevant to the matter before us, herr hate-speech?

That's what I thought.

Sorry- I'm just a working stiff Vermonter and I can't break your codes but I did learn to read the paper. This is the 2nd time Sen Shumlin has tried to blackmail Vermont Yankee and he is using coercion to convince his party to go along with him.

It's terrible when legislators ask that the rate payer's money is used for it's intended use.

We have utilities to charge ratepayers. They work under the guidance of the PSB. This is so the ratepayers DON'T end up paying for non-utility items. In the case of Vermont Yankee, we have paid for the estimated cleanup- Shumlin now wants the ratepayers to fund a second round of cleanup funds (400 million) that has already been escrowed. What point are you making?

Rate payers have paid into the decommissioning fund.

It isn't a hard concept.

How is it that all you self-proclaimed "working stiff Vermonters" are available 24/7 to spew your ignorant slop?

Either business is really slow and you're goofin' off on Company time or business is really slow and you're goofin' off on your own time.

Either way, you're ignorant, anonymous trash with bupkis and an inordinate amount of free time to spew your factually-challenged slop for self-proclaimed "working-stiff Vermonters".

Just how do ya account for that, little fella?

That's what I thought.

You're not just ignorant, anonymous trash with bupkis, evidently, you're unemployed ignorant trash with bupkis.

Given the collective ignorance of you coalition of the clueless cretins, that's not at all surprising.

Adult Basic Education. Look into it, schmuck.

Clearly, we're not spending enough on Education in Vermont.

"This is the 2nd time Sen Shumlin has tried to blackmail Vermont Yankee and he is using coercion to convince his party to go along with him."

It is a hard concept for some people.

duh- read my post- that is what I said- they paid it once- they shouldn't have to pay it again because it isn't necessary.

It seems that lefty Shumlin-clones just can't understand the concept of "a deal is a deal"! Who would want to operate in Vermont if Shumlin can change the rules whenever he has one of his "petulant" moments? Oh that's right, his acolytes are all from the Bernie Sanders school of "there are no rules when dealing with business"!

I do find it hypocritical however that you of all people would take this board to task about posting insulting comments you being the King of Trash Talk and all.

"Would you like to take this opportunity to apologize to all those you have offended and ask all parties to join with you in a new era of civil conversation on this blog? A real man would extend his hand in friendship."

Ya mean like you're doin' now, little fella?

Again, nice try.

Clearly, that characterization doesn't apply to your ignorant, anonymous ass, little fella, but if you know anyone fitting that description and they feel the need to apologize and atone for something, send 'em my way, schmuck. I'll hear them out and take it from there.

Always a pleasure.

Dismissed.

yawn....rantings of a moron

Coopy introduces a new phrase to the board...'Scoop-shop slop'.

Scoop-shop.... I like it when you use shop talk. I get it... Scoop-shop is ice cream store. Cool. So what other neat words do you counter boys use?

"Nary a one of your nameless nitwits have made a legitimate point or produced the evidence to back it up since ya got here, schmuck. "

Clearly you stand at the head of this line. Point to a fact you have offered and again, insults are not facts no matter how often you repeat them.

Once again, little factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest/slow on the uptake fella, my claim that you have not made a legitimate point or provided the evidence to back it up since you got here is a statement of fact and unless and until you manage to meet that burden, it will remain so.

As for insults, you're ignorant trash with bupkis because you keep proving that your ignorant trash with bupkis, little fella.

Either get yourself a legitimate case and the evidence to substantiate it or get used to it.

Always a pleasure.

Dismissed.

Martha Abbott???????????????????

JW's favorite "scoop shop dirty talk" phrase is
" can I dip your cone for you sir....please say yes please say yes

Ben and Ferries ice cream employee of the year JW

yeah... uh, back to the topic at hand... That being the reason our state can't afford anything. Being lack of good paying jobs.... When I graduated from Vermont Tech in 2000 80% of the 2 year Electrical Engineering Techs went to IBM. Since then 50% of them no longer work there. Instead, New York opened their arms to IBM, gave them tax credits and encouraged them to build new facilities. Fishkill, NY now has an enormous 300mm line and Essex got bunk. Now our Brilliant State Legislature has decided to resort to name calling... terrific. Lets just tell the high-school and college kids in the state that we don't want them to stay here...

exactly and well said.

Remind me again, little factually-challenged fella, who controlled the Vermont Legislature in 2000, who's been Governor since '03 and just what specific policies either former Governor Howard Dean or the Dem Legislature have prevented the Doogie/Dubie Debacle and the Gops from enacting that are responsible for IBM's choice to move much of their operations to Fishkill and just how New York "opened their arms to IBM.

Take your time. Like your factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest/delusional-dreck "argument", your ignorant, anonymous ass ain't goin' anywhere.

Always a pleasure.

Wasn't it a dimocrat that called the IBM official a "liar"? Perhaps our resident Shumlin boot-licker can explain how whoever controlled the legislature in 2000 or who has been gov since 2003 has anything to do with what Shumlin said.

I thought so.

Never a pleasure.

Begone.
