Ready to spend

Freshman Rep. Peter Welch so far has no opponent as he seeks re-election to a second term. But that hasn't stopped him from raising big bucks for his campaign fund - just in case.

The Democratic congressman and former Vermont State Senate president pro tem raised nearly $171,000 in net campaign contributions during the first quarter of this year, according to a report he filed Tuesday with the Federal Election Commission.

Welch had $828,711 in cash on hand at the end of March. Is it enough to scare off all but the wealthiest challengers?

No blogger is going to determine the future of a potential GOP contender. How about focusing on the real issues impacting Vermonters and asking bloggers for their suggestions? Quit running water for Gannett by continuing to rally the GOP faithful to focus on the lack of a candidate. Now watch. This afternoon, some BFP staffer will post "Will the Democrats ever find a candidate to run against Douglas? Who do you think should?"

Always amazed at how libs just love shylocks like Welch. Did it ever dawn on them that he is a major part of the health care mess? All of his frivolous lawsuits against doctors and hospitals that have made him millions have also contributed greatly to malpractice insurance and hospital costs. And then they stand there wetting their pants over the lack of affordable health care! Can't see the forest because of the trees!

In debating, it's called the ad hominem argument. When bereft of actual, substantive responses to your opponent's arguments, you go after them personally and insultingly. It is the lowest form of debate tatic, and is generally frowned upon as shallow and misinformed.

Please. I was not one that suggested that anyone who disaggrees with the ever-charming JWC is an evil troglodyte and moron. JWC, when and if he matures a bit, will come to realize it is possible for reasonable minds to differ. That well-intentioned, bright individuals can actually diaagree in good faith.
