Who's melting?

You know how the economy is melting down around us?

Well, here's something to noodle on: According to the New York Times, the 20 hardest-hit ZIP codes in the housing foreclosure part of the meltdown are all in four states: California, Florida, Nevada and Arizona.

All of those except California are places often touted as "affordable" places to live - people move there because of the cheap housing. Maybe there's a price to pay for cheapness?

I don't know about you, but I'm still surprised whenever I hear that this economic meltdown is only the worst since 1994 or 1991 or sometime in the 1970s. Because I don't remember any other time when it felt like the economy was in such a free-fall.

How does this compare for you all?

- Terri Hallenbeck

Comments:
Where did you get the idea that Florida had "cheap" housing? Maybe that was the case 8 or 9 years ago, but the problems the state has is because the housing market went up so fast recently due in large part to "flipping" that the houses had become seriously overvalued. The prices I have seen lately for middle-income houses seem to once again be about what they were several years ago. As for the more expensive homes, it appears many of these owners can afford to either rent, lease, or just hold on to until the market bounces back.

The value of all housing (except maybe trailers) has plummeted in FL due to the property tax situation.

And the brain-dead, bush-league, gop-slime family legacy rolls on towards its well-deserved date with infamy and oblivion.

This is the worst gop-slime mess the Dems have been forced to clean up since the Great Depression.

Then again, Obama isn't the first man to be hired to clean up one of shrub's messes.

Unfortunately, I doubt he'll be the last.

Of course the worse mess EVER was what Ronald Reagan cleaned up after Jimmy Carter. Carter mercifully ended his term with 12.5% inflation; Reagan ended 8 years later with 4.4%; Carter ended with 7.1% unemployment, Reagan with 5.5%; Carter's prime interest rate ended at 15.3%, Reagan at 9.3%. As for FDR ending the depression, he did enact some stop-gap schemes like CCC and WPA, but it took WWII to end the depression (that's 1942, jw). Let's hope Obama is more like Reagan than FDR!

"You read what JW writes??

Then you are a bigger moron than he is. "

Guilty, but it is a little like driving past a traffic accident. You know you shouldn't look but for whatever perverse reason you just have to.

I'm not JW, I just hate it when the conversation here becomes about him.

The guy is a dolt and we should all ignore his posts.

They are redundant and unproductive.

bubba...

"Of course the worse mess EVER was what Ronald Reagan cleaned up after Jimmy Carter..."

Bubbakis, you clearly have the same utterly-psychotic, scum-vote-slime mastery of American History that pinhead palin has of World Geography and Fifth Grade Civics.

Ya want I should confuse ya with the facts and carve ya up now or do you wanna take this opportunity to use one of your lifelines?

Always a pleasure.

Re: jw 5:23 post - yes, I DO want you to show me what facts I posted are wrong.

In advance, I thought so.

"The people that respond to JW are stupider than he is."

What ever you say Jiffy

"Re: jw 5:23 post - yes, I DO want you to show me what facts I posted are wrong.

And in advance, thanks, bubbakis. Don't ever change. You are the ignorant anonymous trash gift that keeps on giving, little fella.

Are ya gonna tell me that FDR tricked Japan into attacking Pearl Harbor and Hitler to declare war on us for days later just to get us out of the Depression he had us mired in again now, too, little fella?

For the record, last year, ya told me that the Depression didn't end until the calendar magically turned 1943 and that saddam was a greater threat to the US after 9/11/01 than Hitler and the Japanese were before 12/7/41 even though Hitler's U-Boats had been sinking US Merchant Shipping on a regular basis since 1939, and, as you know, saddam had no WMD and nothing to do with 9/11.

Again, feel free to check, chump.

That was in all the papers, too.

Bubbakis, pick a fascist fantasy and run with it for fook sake.

Now, apart from the fact that you've, once again, chosen to attack my steel-toed boots with your teeth again, left your boy shrub even more wide open and utterly-defenseless than he already was with a dose of your own bogus before and after stats and cherry-picked "facts", bubbakis, to put it as tactfully as possible, you're not only outta your freakin' tree, you're dumber than dirt.

What's more, given the fact that your next thought will be your first, bubbakis, I'm not at all surprised to see you make another one of your patented, utterly-psychotic, suicide-bomber runs on reality.

Or, if you prefer, homicide-bomber - the fixed-news, bizarro-world term of choice.

Once again, apart from the fact that interest rates peaked under Reagan in 1981, the Reagan Recession grew deeper in 1982 and the economy didn't turn around until well into 1983 when Reagan had been in Office with a gop-slime Senate for well over two years.

Furthermore, there was not only no storied Stock Market Crash of '79 under Carter to rival those gop-slime ones of '29 under Hoover, '87 under Reagan or '08 under this incompetent, illegitimate-trash schmuck, there was no Stock Market Crash under Carter at all.

There was also no Federal Deficit or Great Depression from 1981-1983, either.

As always, bubbakis, feel free to check.

Now, with respect to your factually-challenged, fascist fairy tales on interest, even if one accepts your always-suspect figures under Carter of 15.3 percent, the prime interest rate rose to 21.5 percent in June of 1982.

You do realize that 21.5 percent is higher than 15.3 percent, don't you, bubbakis?

Furthermore, for the record, bubbakis, in June of 1982, reagan had been in office for 18 months.

Again, feel free to check, little fella.

So, now that we've cleared that up for the umpteenth time during the course of the past year and we've established that high interest rates under Carter actually rose considerably under Reagan as the Reagan Recession deepened and the economy worsened, is it really your clueless-cretin contention that reagan inherited a problem of the magnitude of the Great Depression from Carter?

Just how frickin' stupid are you, bubbakis?

"Carter mercifully ended his term with 12.5% inflation; Reagan ended 8 years later with 4.4%; Carter ended with 7.1% unemployment, Reagan with 5.5%; Carter's prime interest rate ended at 15.3%, Reagan at 9.3%."

Gee, bubbles, do you think inflation, the federal debt, the federal deficit and the unemployment rate will be higher or lower when shrub is finally forced to hand Obama the baseball and hit the showers on 1/20/09 than it was on 1/20/01 when, with the help of his lard-butted little brother, Katherine Harris and 5 of the 9 Supremes, he sneaked into the stadium, swiped a uniform and a ball, took the mound and commenced to impersonate a major leaguer for eight of the worst years in American History.

How about the number of abortions and military deaths and maimings?

Oh, well, bubbakis, look on the bright side. It's a pretty safe bet that at least the stock market and home values will be down.

Always a pleasure.

"Wow Jiffy, you've fooled everyone!"

Nah, you clowns had that covered long before I got here, little fella, but thanks all the same.

It's mighty sweet of ya to say so, schmuck.

"Yeah Jiffy what you’re doing is abuse. BIG MAN COOPER!

Just like your ol’ man."

Gee, just like my ol' man, eh?

Well, then by all means, little fella, it is your sacred duty as a citizen to call the cops at once, schmuck.

Go on. Knock yourself out, little nameless-nitwit fella.

Now, that's entertainment.

You haven't made me laugh so hard in seconds.

Always a pleasure.

"Yeah coop you already made it clear the only one in the world that matter to Jeff Cooper, is Jeff Cooper.."

Well, so much for the question of who's melting.

We have us an ignorant anonymous trash "winner"

Call a cop, clueless.

Always a pleasure.

Get a life Coop. Seek help.

A lot of typical bilge and bluster but as usual, jw can't disprove facts. (By the way I have always said that the depression ended in 1942, NOT 1943). And if you want to bring up every little bump in the road before the results are final, remember that until the dims took over Congress in 2006 unemployment under Bush was lower than at any time under Clinton.

"Right again, Bubba!"

Things need to change in Vermont in a big way.

They do. You all had your chance to throw out all the bums that brought you nothing over the last years on the 4th but didn't. You voted heavily for the incumbents....the same ones that have underwhelmed you over the last few years.

Either (a) you really like what they are doing for you and are afraid to admit it or (b) you are afraid to vote for real change or (c) you just like to complain hoping to win JW's favor.

Captain America

Well, Captain America, it runs like this: natives seldom vote any more, and if they do they vote for some simpleton liberal that seems to be such a nice person. Like a pack of family pet dogs tearing apart a hapless fawn in the woods, these libs, when running in their pack in Montpelier tear apart the conservative and moral foundations of this state. Not a pretty sight to come upon one of these fawns, or for that matter, to see what these fools have done to Vermont.

How true Bubba...how true. It is clearly easier in VT to just check the box for more of the same than to think critically and try to make things better.

The grass is never greener...VT these days is making my Southern roots look more attractive every day. The 'New England ethic' has clearly become myth. What once was is no more.

The hatred of the likes of Coop makes anything in the South pale in comparison.

Captain America

Yeah. That's why the KKK is in the news again.

huh?

That's how the doogie/dubie debacle stays in office, crazy lady. It sure as hell ain't the strength of their record.

Yeah, that gone with the wind slop is just that, auntie amerika. Time for your ignorant anonymous ass to set out for redder pastures.

Just climb up on the Golden Dome, spread your wings and start flyin' south, crazy lady.

I'll miss ya, but I'll get over it.

It's been fun.

Nah, the fact that Obama is President, Welch ran unopposed, Dem Majorities in Congress and the Legislature are even greater than before and that your ignorant anonymous ass is cryin' and whinin' shows that the scum vote is on the wane, bubbakis.

Nobody blocked brain-dead bigots like you from the polls, putz. You swine are just dyin' off in droves like the dimwitted dinosaurs ya are.

Go find yourself a tar pit and fall in it.

Always a pleasure.

Christ, what did bubbakis, nekkie boy and auntie amerika do now?

Self centered slime Coopy bringing shame on his wife and sons to prove he is the Queen Bitch again.

Nice to know there are things you can count on. Coop being a moron is right up there with the sun coming up in the east every morning.

Next up coop trying in vain to turn this around to make himself look smart.

Maybe the fat booze hound thinks the sun will rise in the west too.

It's time to vote. Who is the most dysfunctional family?
(A) The Osbourne's
(B) The Coop's

At least Ozzy brings money into the house by acting like an idiot.

Coop could at least go down to town and panhandle but he'd miss his stories.

It sounds like the first vote goes to Coopy!
