Housing, econ development to merge

The latest staffing change in the Douglas administration includes plans to lop off of one commissioner position - a savings on the order of $100,000, though that commissioner slot had been empty for a few months.

Gov. Jim Douglas' Deputy Chief of Staff Betsy Bishop will become commissioner of the to-be-merged Departments of Economic Development and Housing and Community Affairs.

In addition to saving money, the move is supposed to improve coordination. That is the sort of things people say when they are cutting. Just like your cereal box tells you it's new improved cereal when it's really less cereal.

Bishop, as deputy chief of staff, was the chief liaison between the governor's office and the Legislature. I'm guessing - just guessing here - that job now goes to Dennise Casey.

As commissioner, Bishop replaces Mike Quinn, who said he wanted to return to the private sector and will start looking for a job there. She also sort of replaces Bill Noyes, who was filling in as interim commissioner of Housing and Community Affairs after the previous interim,
Molly Dugan, left to become a project manager for Cathedral Square Corp. in September, after the previous commissioner John Hall left in the spring.

Comments:
Bishop leaving makes sense now that Smith's not around to keep her occupied.

Douglas treats state government like a reality show for his cronies. Today Betsy, you will be running economic development while Jason takes care of parks and rec. Tune in to see how they do.

One down, four to go.

Unbelievable - this is taking cronyism to a new level!

Vermonters did not vote for musical chairs in senior management.

Get over yourself. Vermonters voted overwhelming for another Douglas term. And they did this knowing who works for him and how he governs. He's always utilized hard working, talented people - not subject matter experts but creative, energized public servants - in a variety of positions. These changes shouldn't surprise anyone and I think they'll turn out to be great picks.

I'm not really sure why this would be "cronyism" when all the speculation today is about Obama's "Crony" Hillary taking a job in his cabinet as Sec of State. Maybe Governor Douglas and P/E Obama simply respect quality people and reward them when they deserve it. Are we bashing a high powered woman just because she works for a Republican ?

How is this editorial comment supposed to help us understand these changes? Something more substantial and factual would be appreciated.

Well, apart from the fact that not only did Hillary Clinton not work for Barack Obama at any point during their collective time on this planet, she actually ran a fairly spirited race against him in the Democratic Primaries for the right to represent the Democratic Party as their Candidate for the very position Obama was just recently elected to by a fairly substantial margin.

So, just when and where did Dennise Casey and Doogie run against each other for the same gig at the same time in either a primary or a general election, little fella?

That's the lamest analogy I've heard since some fox news nitwit and/or gop-slime Congressman claimed that Obama was the second coming of Hitler because they were both democratically elected and they both had white mothers.

Last I checked, unlike the Reichstag, nobody burned down the Capitol Building before Obama was elected.

Then there's that whole Casey has never been First Lady, Senator from the State of New York or made a serious bid for her Party's Nomination to be President.

Indeed, this may be the first post she's been even so much as a speculative front runner for since Student Council President in Junior High.

"Maybe Governor Douglas and P/E Obama simply respect quality people and reward them when they deserve it."

Maybe not.

"Are we bashing a high powered woman just because she works for a Republican ?"

No, but I'm laughin' my butt off at your ludicrous attempts to link the likes of Dennise Casey to Hillary Clinton, little fella.

Nice try. No sale.

Always a pleasure.

TO JWCOOP...

It seems to me you have a real hatred to all things you don't understand. If you read my post, it referred to Bishop, not Casey.

It appears you've had a keg of the coolaid, but you are probably too young to remember Jonestown, right "big fella". Your taunting and ludicrous analogies tying Fox to Hiter are dribble. My guess is you are so lonely yourself that you get your kicks out of trying to antagonzie people here. It's a sad state of affairs when people cannot have an intelligent converstaion about Governmental appointees. I suppose there should be a legislative caucus investigating why Governor Douglas has moved some of his staff to other positions ? I'm sure that never happened in the Dean administration..... ya, that's right, everyone stayed right in their little cubbie hole for 11 1/2 years... Get a life instead of Harrassing others.

Casey is despised by the Democrats. They'll brush her aside.

It's all "seems" and "appears" with you nameless nitwits.

Fine, did Bishop ever run against doogie in a primary and lose, little fella?

That's what I thought. Ya got any more irrelevant details which have no bearing on the outcome ya wanna spring on me, schmuck?

You made the bogus analogy to Hillary, little fella. If ya don't wanna get decked, stop leadin' with your chin, chump.

"My guess is you are so lonely yourself that you get your kicks out of trying to antagonzie people here."

Well, you've established the fact that ya can't spell antagonize or figure out spellcheck.

Congrats.

Having caught your ignorant anonymous act, little factually-challenged fella, clearly, it's all guess work with you.

You're not very good at it.

Get yourself a case and a clue, schmuck.

I don't brake for nameless nitwits with bupkis and I ain't gonna start with the likes of you.

Always a pleasure.

politics gets in the way of real governing...is it about whom is appointed by whom...or is the job going to get done and done well...seems like we all need jobs...so lets do them...

or should we continue...who is on first and what is on second....

baseball anyone?
