Economic class

My 11 a.m. class today was economics with Professor Douglas. My classmates and I listened attentively while the professor wrote out on a flip chart the ways in which his economic plan is better than THEIR economic plans.

I felt like I had already taken that class, but apparently the professor thought I and the others needed remedial lessons.

He picked apart his opponents' plans line by line. Douglas charged that half of Democrat Gaye Symington's ideas are already in the works and the other half won't work. As for independent Anthony Pollina, all his ideas fall in one category: more debt and taxes.

A couple of interesting side notes from the class:

- Douglas said he doesn't know how many jobs his plan would create or how long it would take to create them. This is the frustrating thing for the average voter, I think. One can't help but have the feeling that no candidate for any office has a plan that will truly make any difference.

- Douglas has increasingly focused criticism on Pollina. This means either: that he has a poll showing Pollina picking up votes; he wants to give Pollina more name recognition so he takes votes from Symington; or he is really hoping to lump them together so that anybody who has decided they don't like one won't like the other either.

- Douglas has not yet finessed his criticism of Pollina's plan to close the capital gains loophole. Douglas' argument is that there won't be much of a capital gains, but Douglas himself was promising to use that same closing of the loophole to offer tax cuts. Were those tax cuts that shaky a promise?

- Douglas said Symington's campaign is calling for a boycott of Essex Junction businesses that have campaign signs in front of them. Faithful readers will recall that the Free Press reported Saturday that Rep. Peter Hunt of Essex Junction called for the boycott, even though the signs are posted on the right-of-way, unconnected to the businesses in the plaza. Hunt is Symington's driver for the campaign, as in he drives her to and fro. Now I think we can all agree that the call for a boycott was odd at best, but can one really say that Peter Hunt=Gaye Symington? If a Republican legislator were working on Douglas' campaign would everything that person did and said be tantamount to the governor doing/saying?

- Terri Hallenbeck

Comments:
Symington has a driver? Yeesh. Get over yourself. So much for being in touch with the average Vermonter.

I hope our legislators remember that Mr. Douglas was opposed to the idea of the popular vote deciding who wins elections. Nowdays, though, he's not so opposed to the idea. Flippity floppity, Jim has seen the light.

We've done it Douglas's way for 6 years. Now we have a higher unemployment rate than we've had in 15 years.

Move over Douglas. Your way has not worked.

Douglas is a liar. Symington never called for a boycott.

He should man up and retract his lies.

Douglas always stretches the truth to suit him.

Jim Douglas is an empty suit!

Many of Jim Douglas' economic ideas over the last 6 years have been rejected tby the members of his own party in the House!

Jim Douglas loves Wall Street...
- He still wants to privatize the lottery, rejected by his own party, and the general populace in VT
- He still thinks its a good idea to allow people to invest their Soc Sec. in the stock market - despite what's happened in recent weeks.

The gubernatorial candidate who is out of touch with Vermonters is JIM DOUGLAS!

Symington obviously never called for a boycott because it is difficult for her to put together one complete, understandable sentence.

The fact is there isn't a candidate in this race that has the ability to get the job done.

Douglas is the best of the three but he will never be able to get anything done as long as the legislature is as incapable as it is in working cooperatively with the other Party to affordably address the issues.

Unbelievable. There is a very good chance that the Dem candidate for Governor in VT - one of the most Dem states in the nation - will finish in 3rd place.

Unbelievable.

^^ you're living in a fantasy world, buddy. Pollina always finishes last. This time is no exception.

Douglas has overseen one of the most dramatic job loss periods in Vermont's history. It makes me sick that he is trying to claim the high ground on economic cures and job creation. The guy is f-ing clueless. Hopefully his high unfavorable rating will force him to at least try floating some bi-partisan legislation this next session. Nah, who am I kidding. Jim is about Jim and no one else. He's been feeding at the p;ublic trough too long and is unable to change his ways.

** PLEASE **

Give to the Senator Ted Stevens soap-on-a-rope fund.

1-800-TED-SOAP.

Ted will be serving time along side other conviced fellons and we want to make sure that any homosexual encounters the senator has are consentual.

Ted has been given some lavish gifts from the oil companies. Now it's your turn to give to Ted.

A small $3 donation will keep Ted upright in the showers for a week or more.

Give now

1-800-TED-SOAP.

Thanks

I am excited!

Still waiting for Palin to weigh in on her state's senior senator's illegal activity. I sure hope she is asked about it before the election. Isn't she claiming to be cleaning up corrupt Alaska politics?

I am never ceased to be amazed by the idiots that blame Jim Douglas for job losses in Vermont! Ask any business why they leave the state for greener pastures and it's always the same answer - the high taxes and ridiculous permitting regulations imposed by the LIBERAL DIM/PROGs that have controlled the legislature for years! If any of you pathetic leftist apologists can think of what Douglas has done to scare off business I'm sure we'd all like to hear it!

Let's review.

Teddy Stevens gets nailed on all seven felony counts. That leaves one less gop-slime vote in AK.

Don Young is next. That makes two fewer available gop-slime votes in AK.

Psycho Sarah goes down after Young and the scum vote loses their patron saint and leading candidate for 2012.

A skinhead/neo-nazi nitwit/timothy mcveigh wing of the gop-slime/brain-dead bubbakis bigot brigade plot to kill Obama and others gets busted by the ATF.

All in all, not a bad day, as Mondays go.

Always a pleasure.

I am more excited!

I always suspected that Ted had a wide stance!

Perhaps Teddy Stevens and me can get together before the election and play "prison guard" !!

And good riddance to the old Guard of the Republican Party! Bubba will be joining them soon too. Happy days are here again.

PS Jim Douglas = old Guard lite

She's got a charity to donate those expensive duds they made her wear to - The Ted Stevens/Gop-Slime Defense Fund.

Jiffy is a busy little troll today. Fueled by candy corn and gin but fooling no one.

Go fall down ya drunk.

"Jiffy is a busy little troll today. Fueled by candy corn and gin but fooling no one."

Yeah, you're an ignorant, anonymous-trash nobody, alright, little nameless-nitwit fella.

The cream of scum vote society.

All yak and no sack. Just like the rest of nameless nitwit nation, only more so.

Remember, little fraudulent fella. No calls after 8:00PM

Always a pleasure.

The little bitch boy is still trying to falsely insinuate I am making harrasing calls.

You'll note though the that the fat, worthless drunk is no longer directly making that statement.

I guess even a wet brain like Jiffy can figure out that there are "rewards" for falsely claiming a crime has been comitted.

Dry your eyes and change your soiled shorts boob. If you don't make a false report to the cops they will not pop you for making a false report to them. Simple enough for a simp like you to get Coop?

You're a comedy classic Cooper. Right up there with the moron with the sledge hammer bashing water melons back in the 1970s and that stupid Elf movie. Hold your head high freakshow. Those boys had to blow thousands on coke to make themselves look like loser idiots and all you had to do was show up and keep sucking down cheap booze.

You're a natural Jiffy, a natural born nothing.

Go cry yourself to sleep again. Maybe tonight your fairy godmother will bring you a life.

I guess those skinheads in TN have about as much credibility as jw a few months ago when he was likewise threatening various Republicans with hanging, shooting, whatever. Guess he has more in common with the Tennessee taliban than he realizes.

bubba...

"I guess those skinheads in TN have about as much credibility as...."

Your ignorant anonymous ass guesses wrong, bubbakis. Again. Still.

Then there's the white trash tramp for McCain in Pittsburgh who falsely claimed she was attacked by a "big black Obama supporter" who carved a backwards "B" on her forehead before confessin' to having made up the whole thing.

What's your ignorant anonymous ass's guess on that, bubbakis?

Gee, bupkis from bubbakis. What are the odds.

Take it where the climate suits your sheet, schmuck.

Vote for Tom Costello for Lt Gov!!

Hey Bubba,

Can you name one company that left because of high taxes?

Can you name one company that left because of permitting?

And by the qway, Act 250 was a GOP idea and implenetation.

CWS grocery moved because of permitting denials. EHV will never expand because of permitting AND taxes (their own words). IBM is downsizing in Vermont, expanding elsewhere (i.e., New York) because of same. Walmart builds in Littleton and Woodsville, NH because of permitting problems in Vermont. Several companies like NE Tool in Lyndonville move to North Carolina for same reasons. Many more, as I'm sure you know.

Statements that IBM is leaving because of taxes or permitting are not accurate. NE Tool moved to North Carolina in a consolidation of their sites. Walmart, if they truly wanted to locate in Eastern Vermont would be doing what they are doing in St. Albans--compromising.

You ever notice that whenever a company "consolidates" their sites they are NEVER in Vermont?

DOH!

Just maybe because Vermont is not located in proximity to larger markets?

Pratt and Whitney just closed its location in Plattsburg and consolidated its operations in Canada. Thought New York was an enlightened state who knew how to offer appropriate perks to companies. Must be the anti-business climate seeped over the border from Vermont.

"Just maybe because Vermont is not located in proximity to larger markets?"

All the more reason to be aggressive in offering lost operating costs and tax incentives to Companies that will do business in the state.

A wise proverb: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime".

As altered by liberal dimocrats: "Give a man a fish every day because he deserves it; why should the rich have all the fish? Teach a man to fish and you feed the above for a lifetime, and maybe yourself if any are left".

Your answer to the Plattsburg situation?

Why has upstate New York also failed to recruit and retain business when the state obviously has a lot more to work with in monetary incentives?
Could it also be location???

What percentage of New Hampshire's businesses are located in its northernmost regions? In contrast,
how much is located in the greater Boston area?

bubba...

"CWS grocery moved because of permitting denials. EHV will never expand because of permitting AND taxes (their own words)...."

And we should take them at their word.....why? Their exemplary track record for honesty, transparency and smart business judgement?

Nice try, nitwit.

Bill Gates is a billionaire several times over, today, because the geniuses at IBM told him that as long as they had the computer hardware business, he could keep the software because "there was no money in computer software."

How's that shrewd business decision workin' out for IBM so far, bubbakis?

IBM is downsizing in Vermont, expanding elsewhere (i.e., New York) because of same."

Evidence? Of course not.

They're not expanding here because of a global market slowdown affecting demand for what they make at their plant here and because Jim Equals Joblessness. Give him two more and he'll have ya homeless, too.

Granted, Vermont's a victim of the same ignorant-trash gop-slime economic policies that have the rest of the Country and much of the World on the verge of a global economic meltdown after eight years of brain-dead bush-league economics, but, then again, doogie still supports those policies, so there goes that excuse.

Evidently, ACT 250 and Vermont's alleged anti-business climate is so toxic that it's spread to the other 49 States and throughout the rest of the World, too.

"...Walmart builds in Littleton and Woodsville, NH because of permitting problems in Vermont. Several companies like NE Tool in Lyndonville move to North Carolina for same reasons. Many more, as I'm sure you know."

I do, eh?

In other words, you're still dumb, you're still scum and ya got bupkis, bubbakis.

Thanks for clearin' that up, little fraudulent fella.

These companies have made a career out of lying their asses off and blaming other people for their mistakes.

Ford and GM didn't need any help from the State of Vermont to run their businesses into the toilet.

Ya got bupkis, bubbakis. Again. Still.

Take it where the climate suits your sheet, schmuck.

Then again, they're not hirin' down there, either.

Ford and GM didn't need help from Vermont - they had plenty of "help" from the UAW. Too bad those union jobs where you had to screw in ONLY ONE kind of light bulb to get your $40 an hour couldn't last! BUT, HEY, HOPE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER - if Barack wins, the union thugs and their "card" signing parties will no doubt bring back the bad ol' days!

Hey Bubba,

If it weren't for Unions, there would be more people in "slave" labor with minimal benefits!

More people would be in soup lines and the middle class would have disappeared - not that it isn't already per Bush/Cheney/GOP ideas!

Get real!

Unions haven't been relevant since the 30's. Why does anyone have to be a "slave" today? I have moved thousands of miles to get a better job. How ridiculous is it for supposedly highly educated people like educators needing to have a union boss to tell them how to vote, when to work, how much of a kickback to give? Unions today only benefit the lazy and are a detriment to this country.

bubba....

"Ford and GM didn't need help from Vermont - they had plenty of "help" from the UAW."

Oh, sure, it's all the UAW's fault that management made bad business decisions and designed cars people didn't want and weren't as good as the Japanese and the Germans.

Nice try, nitwit.

"..Too bad those union jobs where you had to screw in ONLY ONE kind of light bulb to get your $40 an hour couldn't last! BUT, HEY, HOPE IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER - if Barack wins, the union thugs and their "card" signing parties will no doubt bring back the bad ol' days!"

Ya mean the bad ol' days when people worked, families had health care, one blue collar paycheck could support a family and mom could stay home to raise the kids if she chose to, bubbakis.

Talk about your living hells.

Bubbakis, you're just another ignorant, anonymous-trash, take back vemunt punk with bupkis. Take it where the climate suits your sheet.

The sooner Vermont sees the back of the brain-dead, bigoted-trash, lunatic-fringe likes of you, the better.

Disappear.

bubba...

"Unions haven't been relevant since the 30's. Why does anyone have to be a "slave" today? I have moved thousands of miles to get a better job."

Well, now that Jim equals joblessness has given your ignorant anonymous ass another opportunity to hit the highway, now would be a good time to do just that, bubbakis.

If psycho sarah can't hook ya up with a gig to "gift" her and the first dude with an addition to the palin palace, try your luck in Tulsa.

I'm gonna miss your ignorant anonymous ass, little fella, but I'll get over it in a second or two.

Always a pleasure.
