Weighing in with Obama

U.S. Sen. Patrick Leahy says he'll be sitting down this week with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama to talk about who Obama should choose for a vice presidential running mate.

What would you like Leahy to tell him?

Leahy told WCAX that Obama needs someone who can help make policy decisions, and work with Republicans and Democrats in Washington to help get his agenda through Congress. Leahy says he has about a dozen people on his short list, including Senator Hillary Clinton, various governors and people outside of government.

- Terri Hallenbeck

Comments:
Anyone is an improvement over Cheney.

Bernie's the man

Leahy needs to know if his candidate can write subpoenas- this is the only accomplishment for Leahy in past 4 years, other than embarrass VT in front of the oil execs. . Let's bring back the "Flying Finger of Fate" award and present it to Leahy!

nek's only accomplishment in the past 4 years is spreading lies on the internet.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D-KS). She can focus on reining in the Hillary dissenters and appeal to the Midwest Bubba's (Not the Bubba that blogs in here. He's hopeless.)

Ed Rendell, Bill Richardson or Chris Dodd.

This meeting has nothing to do with the VP decision. Leahy's going to ask Obama if he'll rename the White House as the Leahy House. Old Pat has run out of buildings in Vermont...

Leahy leaked classified information to the press shortly after he became Senator. A Republican would have been kicked out of the Senate. That is NOT a lie- only a dumocrat could get away with leaking classified documents. OOPS- I didn't think it was classified!!
Some people only want to believe Daily Koos- everything else is a lie!

Another Republican lie. It's so sad you can't stick to the facts.

If you are so concerned about leaks of classified information, think about who leaked Plame's name to the media.

Bill Richardson is the logical choice. He has world-wide diplomatic experience, managerial experience at the state government level and will help keep Hispanic voters in the party.

Howard Dean!!

Leaky Leahy strikes again. It is a well known fact that he did, in fact, leak confidential state secrets to the press. Only rats that want to make a"name" for themselves betray their country like Leahy did. I don't trust him and will never support him. What an egomaniac. Middlesex deserves better.

Rats that want to betray their country -- you are talking about Scooter Libby, Dick Cheney and Karl Rove, right?

Because they are the rats that blew the cover of a CIA agent.

Bush promised that any leakers would be fired ... just another Bush lie.

If you read the news, it was Richard Armitage that made the initial leak. Because he is/was a friend of the Dems, you didn't read much about him. So all of you who wet your pants thinking Cheney et al were going to jail- get a grip.
To address the blog, I would think Richardson is the best choice for VP. I do not agree with all he does but he is one of the few who can/has reduced taxes and he is more centrist to balance the far left Obama.

Leahy..."embarrass Vermont in front of the oil executives...". It's the oil executives who are an embarrassment in their crass greed for more and more.

Leahy's"leak" was not deliberate.
What was done to Valerie Plame, however, was calculated and aimed at a political enemy (her husband) without regard for the safety of the agent or her contacts,to punish someone who was trying to tell the truth about lies told by Bush/Cheney support an illegal and immoral war.

Who are you guys kidding?
Leahy is highly respected and revered in Vermont!

This rhetoric is ridiculous - because the voters keep supporting and voting Leahy in every 6 years!

That's the "poll" that really counts!

At the risk of straying from the discussion of who betrayed their country more, who was more embarrassing..the oil companies or the congressional panel, or whether or not Leahy can dream up one more unenforceable supeona to issue as a grandstanding political event, I would like him to:

1. Push for a fiscal conservative to temper BO's left wing agenda and understands the 'free market' from something other than a socialist's point of view.

2. Push for someone with experience in the real world, that understands Iran is not our friend and that dealing with them as you would your misbehaving child is not effective.

3. Push for someone that demonstrates the first real step towards unifying the bi-partisan behavior of Congress.

4. Push for someone with some 'seat time' in Washington. Change is a great slogan but the DC machine exists and BO doesn't have the experience to work it effectively.

If you read the news, you know that Cheney, Rove and Libby were behind the leak.

This is why Libby had to lie to the grand jury and why Libby was found guilty of that.

Your lies are compounding.

"Iran is not our friend and that dealing with them as you would your misbehaving child is not effective."

One thing is for certain: The Bush/McCain approach to Iran isn't working.

So much nekwit nonsense, so little time.

Get your ignorant, ill-informed ass a grasp on reality, schmuck.

Once again, Nekkie boy, your ignorant, ill-informed ass is as bad at lying as ya are at graspin' reality.

As Assistant Secretary of State in 2003 when Armitage allegedly leaked Plame's identity to Novak, Woodward, etc, was he or was he not a member of the Bush Administration?

That's what I thought. Dennis Kucinich didn't leak the info, schmuck, a member of the Bush Administration did.

Scooter didn't get convicted of four felonies for nothin', nekwit.

So, once again, you not only prove yourself to be dumb, scum and to have bupkis, nekkie boy, but as an apologist for all things Bush/GOP, you prove yourself to be UnAmerican, unpatriotic, treasonous trash.

You and your coalition of the clueless cretin comrades are no more loyal, patriotic Americans than the Nazis were loyal, patriotic Germans.

Always a pleasure.

"One thing is for certain: The Bush/McCain approach to Iran isn't working."

It's difficult to think that anyone's approach will work. Iran has the upper hand as they see it today.

They have realized: (1) they will ultimately control our actions by controlling the price and flow of oil, (2) there is enough anti-West/Islamic furor in the middle east for them to know it will be difficult to do something that the rest of the area won't support even if they don't agree, (3) China and Russia are supportive of them bringing the size and strength they currently don't have, and (4) long ago they realized we are weak and lack the staying power to fight a long fight. They recognize the crippling impact of the left-wing on any difficult policy decision. that alone may be their most effective ally.

"It's difficult to think that anyone's approach will work. Iran has the upper hand as they see it today."

Thanks to Bush and his ignorant-trash supporters, it's a lot more difficult than it was eight years ago, little fella.

"..They have realized: (1) they will ultimately control our actions by controlling the price and flow of oil, (2) there is enough anti-West/Islamic furor in the middle east for them to know it will be difficult to do something that the rest of the area won't support even if they don't agree, (3) China and Russia are supportive of them bringing the size and strength they currently don't have, and..."

Everyone with a brain knew that eight years ago, little factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest/nameless-nitwit fella.

The only people who didn't realize it were the Bush Administration, Gops in Congress and the ignorant, ill-informed, anonymous-trash likes of your ignorant ass, schmuck, but everyone with a brain knew it.

"...(4) long ago they realized we are weak and lack the staying power to fight a long fight..."

No, like Vietnam, it's just a case of the American People don't like being lied to and having our sons and daughters killed for nothing in unjustified and unjustifiable wars.

"They recognize the crippling impact of the left-wing on any difficult policy decision. that alone may be their most effective ally."

In other words, once they realize Bush and his treasonous-trash supporters are lying and their sons and daughters are being killed and maimed for nothing, the American People are gonna be pissed and pull the plug on the scum responsible.

Ya gonna blame the left for them figuring out that water is wet now, too, little factually-challenged/nameless-nitwit fella?

You're dumb, you're scum and ya got bupkis.

Disappear.

The Bush/McCain answer is to bomb first and ask questions later. McCain has already said that we should "bomb Iran".

Meanwhile the 16 American intel agencies all agree that this is exactly the wrong solution.

We can't afford 4 more years of Bush policies.

Colin Powell.

here is the plan:

1) Major tax cuts that put us into major debit

2) Give up the war in Afganistan in favor of a big nuclear war with Iran

3) Eliminate Social Security and let old people fend for themselves

4) Stay in Iraq for 100 years ... or until we go bankrupt

5) Fire everyone in the Army and let Blackwater run the Pentagon

6) Ignore any natural disaster that strikes Americans on American soil

7) Leak the name of every CIA agent that we don't like

There is a good start.

You're doing a heck of a job, Brownie!

Hey - that away Anonymous 12:58!

You just leaked the GOP sttrategy on foreign and domestic policy!

You should probably be convicted - then pardoned!

At least that is what Ford did, and now Bush will with Libby!

And just to show you how out of touch the GOP is, here's their economic stimulus package - looks just like Governor Doesless'.
-- Senate GOP blocks the Oil Company windfall profit tax - after all, they favor repealing the gas tax - yeah, let's cut taxes - we''ll figure out how to pay for road infrastructure later.

-- GOP policy is cut taxes, expand the deficit, and let our grandkids pay for it!

The profits may be excessive but they are not "windfall" profits. It is hard to tax something you can't measure and don't know what they are. The dems think you can tax your way out of an energy problem- except, you and I will be paying more because this tax will be added right back on to the price. If they would take the excess profit tax and roll back the per gal tax in the same amount it might work but the dumocrats just want more money for their special programs- like Obamas $95 million pork projects.

More Republican lies.

The profits are measurable. To say otherwise is just stupid.

And a Windfall Profits Tax won't increase the price of the product. The price is set by the market (supply and demand). It isn't set by the cost of production.

If this price was set by supply & demand, then you watch the supply come to a halt when we tax the oil companies for their excess profits and somehow the demand won't stop- then what? Do we double the tax again?
These profits are measurable? to what- yes we can count the money in the register but what is excess?
It is always easier for the Dems to use OPM to solve problems.

Oh, so now you agree that the profits ARE measurable?? Interesting.

But now you can't figure out how to set a fair rate on windfall profits. Interesting.

Perhaps you should go back to Econ 101. The price of gas isn't set by the cost of production. If the cost of production goes up, we pay the same. We pay what the invisible hand sets the price at.

You want to spend billions on wars in the Middle East ... but you don't want to pay for these wars.

You're a liar AND a nut job.

what NEK is saying is that if the oil profits go from, say, $900 Billion a year to only $800 Billion a year they won't be able to survive.

It's been a long time since I taught economics but you 2 anony's don't get the picture. First we tax gas profits because the prices are too high, now it is okay to tax because we have to pay for the war. I don't like the war either but this is 2 different issues.
BTW- I think microsoft, google, apple, A-rod, Tom Cruise, Budweiser all make too much money- can't we assess an excess profit tax on them? and why not?

A-Rod's profits aren't close to that of the oil companies. Even Microsoft's profits are small in comparison to that of the oil companies.

Your facts are off ... as usual. Your position gets more bizarre with every post you make. It’s sad to think that you think that you are qualified to teach anyone anything.

Taxation is about raising revenue for our expenses. The war is our major expense. Thanks to the Bush/McCain policies, our country is racking up record debts.
It’s time to wake up.

"The price of gas isn't set by the cost of production. If the cost of production goes up, we pay the same. We pay what the invisible hand sets the price at."

Yeah, you have a clear grasp of economics. Gas prices are a function of cost. If they weren't we would still be paying a much lower price. Oil costs have gone up from $20 a barrel to over $100 a barrel. Gas prices have risen over the same time frame as a direct result of production cost increases. Being the Econ expert you are surely you agree the cost of material (oil) is a component of production costs.

As for you view on taxes, you don't really think that the Oil companies won't pass along the impact of increased taxes back to you through even higher prices?
No one can be that naive.

The price of oil isn't increasing because of production costs.

It's priced based on what the market can bear.

Read a newspaper sometime, hotshot.

Still more nekwit nonsense.

Wrong again, nekkie boy. The Federal Tax on gas in the same 18 cents it was ten years ago when Clinton was in the White House and it was sellin' for less than a buck per gallon.

If you're gonna continue to lie, little factually-challenged fella, at least make an effort.

Oil was 35 bucks/barrel, the Country was at peace, business was booming and Clinton had not only erased the first Bush Budget Deficit, but the dollar was stronger, the WTC Towers were still standing and the Country had a Budget Surplus the day Bush seized power.

After the better part of eight years - the first six with a corrupt gop rubber-stamp Congress - none of those things are true today.

Once again, nekkie boy, you're dumb, you're scum and ya got bupkis, so if you're gonna continue you to lie your ignorant ass off as, having no viable alternative, you clearly intend to do, make an effort.

Always a pleasure.

I do but I am surprised you can.

McCain is depending supporters thinking that the oil companies are God, every war is great and we can keep spending billions on new wars without paying an extra cent in taxes.

And you can't use the excuse they were lied to. You just said in your statement EVERYONE knew. If they KNEW, that rules out the possibility of a lie.

So, I am still waiting for your solution to the middle east problem. Share some of your smarts with us oh great thinker.

"If 'everyone' knew it Coopy why didn't ... left wing Press object. (sic)

It goes to show that the press isn't left-wing afterall. They bought into Bush's agenda.

NEK has left a new comment on the post "Weighing in with Obama":

"It's been a long time since I taught economics but you 2 anony's don't get the picture"

Yeah, and it's been a few years since I skated around the ice hoisting the Stanley Cup aloft and strolled straight into Cooperstown after becoming the first player to hit 1500 homers in MLB, too, nekkie boy.

As if. Clearly, you've got no better than a 50/50 shot at spelling economics let alone teachin' it, schmuck.

"First we tax gas profits because the prices are too high, now it is okay to tax because we have to pay for the war."

Prior to the War in Iraq, when in US History have we ever cut taxes in time of war, nekkie boy?

That's what I thought.

Secondly, where in the Constitution are businesses guaranteed a profit?

That's what I thought?

In addition to an assortment of consumer protection legislation, there are laws on the books against usury. Where are the laws guaranteeing oil company and investment bank profits?

That's what I thought.

"I don't like the war either but this is 2 different issues.
BTW- I think microsoft, google, apple, A-rod, Tom Cruise, Budweiser all make too much money- can't we assess an excess profit tax on them? and why not?"

Nice try, nekwit. Clearly, you're next thought will be your first.

Microsoft and Google are subject to Anti-Trust Legislation. So is Baseball.

The sainted free market sets A-Rod's value. The Yankees were under no obligation to retain his services. They made a business decision of their own free will and chose to retain his services.

The same goes for Tom Cruise. If the Studio doesn't think he's worth it, they're free to let him go to another studio who does just as your ignorant, ill-informed ass is free to not buy a ticket or rent a DVD to see his films or purchase a ticket to watch a Yankee game in person or watch him on TV.

As much as I love baseball and film, they're entertainment industries.

On the other hand, like the Environment, Oil/Energy amd Financial Services are essential to the National Interest.

Once again, your specious apples and anvils analogies don't hold water or stand up to the light of day and you're without a case or a clue.

Then again, you always are.

At the end of the day, inariably, you just plain don't know your ignorant ass from your elbow or what the fook you're talkin' about.

It does, eh? Did Bush and supporters of the War say Saddam had WMD and links to 9/11, little fella? Did they find them? Were they right where Rummy said they were?

Did they say that the invasion would pay for itself and that we'd have 20 bucks/barrel oil instead of 35/barrel and we'd be greeted as liberators with sweets and flowers, little lyin'-slime, ignorant anonymous-trash fella?

How's that workin' out?

That's what I thought.

They lied about Plame. Did Scooter get convicted?

That's what I thought.

They lied. Like you, they did it badly.

"So, I am still waiting for your solution to the middle east problem. Share some of your smarts with us oh great thinker"

Like I said, lose Bush and the people responsible for this mess and never let them near the levers of power again.

Which part of that is givin' your ignorant, anonymous ass trouble, little nameless-nitwit fella?

Now that ya mention it, I'm still waitin' for your ignorant anonymous ass to prove I'm Doug Hoffer from eight months ago, schmuck.

How's that workin' out for ya, schmuck?

I'm sure the ol' economics teacher will field that one as deftly as he does every other chance he gets.

The price at the gas pump has nothing to do with the cost. Prices are set by supply and demand. The US has very little control over existing supply. I am also not worried about how much or how little the gas companies make. The US hauls in the oil execs periodically and get the same answer- drill here, drill now and the cost will go down. The dems "one solution fits all" strategy doesn't work. They just add a tax and the problem goes away.

If the dems had started prosecuting the oil traders and hedge fund managers speculating in oil instead of witch-hunting the administration (are you listening Leahy) and trying to impeach Bush, maybe the oil prices would have been brought under control by now. This is where the gouging is created and must be stopped.
It is all a matter of priorities to Leahy et al.
Thanks for the grammar and spelling lessons Coop- English and typing weren't my subjects but apparently were yours.

Ah, the ol' "OK, maybe Bush, Cheney, the Doogie/Dubie Debacle and the Gops are lyin' scum and maybe my ignorant, ill-informed, lyin'-scum, anonymous ass doesn't know what the hell it's talkin' about and hasn't made a legitimate point since it got here, but what's your plan?" song and dance.

This is the third or fourth time one of you coalition of the clueless cretins has tried to pull this number in the last 48 hours and my answer is the same as it was when ya were still tryin' to pull this number on Hoffer, just which part of lose the gop scum responsible for puttin' us in the mess in the first place and make sure they never get their hands near the levers of power again is givin' your ignorant, anonymous lyin' ass trouble, schmuck?

Once again, neither I or any other member of the non-factually-challenged, gop-slop-spewin' reality-based community is under any obligation to disprove a case neither Bushco, it's demented, delusional-dreck dealin' defenders nor the ignorant-trash likes of your ill-informed anonymous ass never made in the first place.

Lose the gops and the World has a chance. As long as there's gops gummin' up the works with their stupid, selfish, short-sighted, specious slop, there's gonna be problems.

Always a pleasure.

No one is asking you to disprove anything. You know that and are avoiding the question. You are being asked to share your infinite wisdom with us and tell us your solution to the problem.

Keep Hoffer out of this. Doug is much more of a man than you. Like his perspective or not, he had one, presented it and defended it in a civilzed fashion.

So...what's the solution big guy?

Anonymous....

"No one is asking you to disprove anything...."

Well, nobody with a name who can distinguish their ignorant anonymous ass from their elbow anyhow.

"You know that and are avoiding the question. You are being asked to share your infinite wisdom with us and tell us your solution to the problem."

I do, eh? I am, eh?

First of all, once again, who is this ignorant, ill-informed, anonymous, coalition of the clueless-cretin "us" for whom you presume to speak, little nameless-nitwit fella?

Secondly, like informing and reminding you that I wouldn't piss on your ignorant, anonymous ass if it was on fire, I've done that on countless occasions despite the fact that your ignorant, ill-informed ass has not only failed to prove I'm Doug Hoffer over the course of the past eight months, it's also failed to substantiate every damned dimwitted, delusional-dreck dealin' pile of horsebrit hume claim you've made.

Again, what part of lose the gops and the disastrous policies responsible for puttin' us in this fix in the first place and - should the World Court choose to spare their lives after indicting, trying, convicting and sentencing them as the war criminal scum they so clearly are - never let the lunatic-fringe likes of them or their supporters near the levers of power again is givin' your ignorant, ill-informed anonymous ass trouble, little fact-free, nameless-nitwit fella?

"Keep Hoffer out of this. Doug is much more of a man than you. Like his perspective or not, he had one, presented it and defended it in a civilzed fashion."

So, your ignorant, ill-informed anonymous ass wants to discuss this in "a civilized fashion.", eh?

Oy, what a meshuggah putz.

Shmendrik, I would think even the coalition of the clueless-cretin likes of your ignorant, anonymous ass would know enough to take pains to proof your ponderously, pathetic prose when attacking me for failing to debate with your delusional-dreck dealin' ass in "a civilzed fashion." to see that you had properly spelled civilized since that is the central in your bogus broadside against me, but, once again, evidently, that is not the case.

Clearly, I've overestimated you. Again.

Lord, I must be livin' right to have enemies this fookin' stupid.

You truly are the delusional-dreck dealin' dimwit gift who keeps on givin', little factually-challenged/nameless-nitwit fella.

Don't go changin'.

As for Hoffer, don't blame me, schmuck. It was the likes of bubbles and your ignorant, anonymous ass who initially brought the topic up and kept claiming and failing to prove I was him while you were failing to substantiate the rest of your gop-slop nonsense.

Don't blame me for knowin' your history and the facts, little nameless-nitwit fella.

Again, you brought him into this, I didn't.

As for civilized manner, go cheney yourself, chump. Get your ignorant anonymous ass a case and a clue, learn how to spell civilized and I'll give ya the time of day.

Your ignorant, anonymous, can't-spell-civilized ass hasn't had a point since I've been here. There was nothin' even remotely legitimate, intelligent or civilized about your ignorant, anonymous ass before I got here, you've regressed since I've been here and the archives clearly demonstrate that the lot of you coalition of the clueless cretins didn't just come down with terminal cluelessness shortly before I got here, schmuck.

Hoffer made his point and you coalition of the clueless cretins had bupkis and attacked him for his trouble, so spare me the civilized manner, malarkey, punk.

Like I said from day one, deduce bag, if Hoffer wants to reason with the likes of your ignorant anonymous ass, that's his choice. It's not mine. I wouldn't piss on ya if your ignorant, ill-informed, coalition of the clueless cretin ass was on fire then and I haven't changed my mind since.

I don't suffer fools gladly and I'm not gonna my policy for the likes of your ignorant, anonymous ass, schmuck.

Am I goin' too fast for ya, little fella.

Ya had bupkis before I got here. Ya had bupkis when I got here. You've had bupkis since I've been here and I see no evidence of that trend doing anything but continuing in the future whether I continue posting here or not.

You are what you are, schmuck. You're dumb, you're scum and ya got bupkis. That was true of your ignorant, anonymous ass before I got here, it's been true ever since and it'll be true whether I stay or go.

I know you're ignorant trash with bupkis from jump street and usually refuse to waste my time tryin' to talk sense to, educate and reason with the likes of your ignorant, ill-informed. anonymous ass, punk.

You're dumb, you're scum, ya got bupkis and ya like it that way.

The difference between Hoffer and me is that he thought you could be reasoned with like intelligent rational, civilized human beings.

I, on the other hand, know you're dumb, you're scum, ya got bupkis and ya can't even spell the word.

Rational, intelligent people don't hold your ignorant-trash "views" or feel the need to post anonymously like your ignorant, ill-informed, nameless-nitwit ass clearly does.

You have neither the capacity for or the inclination to engage in reasoned debate, little fella. You wouldn't anonymously post such delusional dreck if ya did.

So...what's with the ignorant, anonymous, misspelled trash, little fella?

Always a pleasure.
Dismissed.

I still don't see a solution Jeffy, just more insults. Am I to assume you are just an empty suit?

A smart guy like you must have an answer to a problem as old as the energy crisis. You aren't dodging a chance to show off your smarts are you?
