Poll anyone?

The results of that Rasmussen poll that co-worker Candy Page told you about earlier in the week are in.

And they are confusing - in a way that means you should not take them to any bank, whether it's a faltering bank or a really upstanding one.

Let's put it this way: Democrat Gaye Symington is discounting the results entirely. Republican Jim Douglas is pretty much discounting it and independent Anthony Pollina is trumpeting one part of it while disregarding another.

Rasmussen, who has not returned calls seeking clarity, seems to be saying that if you asked people whether they'd vote for Douglas, Symington or Pollina they results would be:

Douglas 45 percent
Symington 20 percent
Pollina 25 percent

That's the part Pollina's people like a lot. Rasmussen says, however, that another 19 percent say they could end up voting for Symington. And that Pollina could get anywhere from 4-25 percent of the vote. That's a rather large spread.

If you asked people whether they'd vote for Douglas or Symington (leaving Pollina out as they did when they made the first round of calls) the results would be:

Douglas 53 percent
Symington 39 percent

I don't understand why Rasmussen polled without Pollina in the race, unless they know something he hasn't told us. Or unless they didn't really know what was going on in Vermont.

Douglas campaign manager Dennise Casey said their internal polls always show him running stronger than the public polls, though she wasn't sharing her poll results.

Pollina supports Vermont Farmers, Workers and Educators.

Everyday, people are waking up to the reality that Pollina is leading Vermont away from the Global-Wall Street economy, and back to a Vermont based economy.

I agree with you, Terri, these poll results make absolutely no sense. I'll go with the Channel 3 poll numbers. They make more sense. Plus, I think we need one or two other polls to show how this race is going to shape out.

Too many unanswered questions. I'm voting for Douglas but I don't think this poll passes muster.

I also think that Symington will do better than Pollina.

Vermonters have said it over and over and over again.

They don't want Pollina in office.

He isn't trustworthy.

He isn't bright.

He can't manage money.

He hasn't done anything.

He will come in third (again).

Finally see results that are closer to the reality I live. Most of my friends are voting for Pollina, a few are still convinced the "Entergy Nuclear will pay for the clean up; they told us they would," Governor. Sorry Ms. Symington; speaking is a big part of the job and you just don't cut it. This time the people will win.

I know a lot of people who are voting for Pollina too. If these numbers are correct, it shows that Vermont really still is the Vermont that will vote for a candidate who isn't status quo. Gives me hope anyway.

When you have members of the crowd shouting "Kill him" "Terrorist" and "Traitor" because of lies repeated by candidates, then you have a serious problem. These people should have been removed from the crowd by security. Anyone who fails to see the seriousness of this and stands silent while this occurs risks bearing responsibility for very dangerous behavior. McCain has belatedly recognized this and attempted to calm the situation down; Palin has yet to display the common sense and common decency required to do this.

There are no such things as "spoilers". Everyone has a right to run for office. No person, and no party, has the right to tell other people to not put their hat in the ring.

Either your candidate campaigns their butts off and gets the most votes, or they don't. End of story.

"I would have won if that other person was not in the race" is about as un-democratic as you can get.

If the Dem candidate for Governor is blowing it in one of the most liberal states in the nation, that is NOT because there is a perennial third-party fame-chaser in the race. It's because that candidate has failed to energize people about her or her campaign.

To you forgetful folks that think that Tony is ruining your candidate's chances, how do you explain the last two gubernatorial elections? Clavelle and Parker both worked ten times harder (and smarter) than the present Dem candidate, there was no credible third party/indy challenger, and they lost handily.

Interested to hear your thoughts. Cause it seems to me that Symington would have lost with or without Tony in the race, as she ran a dismal campaign and many of us felt that her heart just wasn't in it to win it.

Don't blame a campaign manager when you should be blaming the candidate. If your candidate doesn't want it - and doesn't show the "fire in the belly" that Vermonters look for - then there is nothing a campaign manager can do to overcome that.

I realize that there is a good chance we will end up with a president sympathetic to criminals, terrorists and run-of-the-mill layabouts. Jeff, you know that you need to take your meds if you're going to get better.
