On the tube

You'd have to watch more TV than I do even during baseball playoffs to keep up with all the Symington-Douglas ads. I caught the tail end of Republican Gov. Jim Douglas' anti-Democrat Gaye Symington ad last night and all I glimpsed was a photo of Symington. Now having seen the full ad HERE, I see that Symington is in doom-gloom black-and-white, Douglas in color, with the statement, "It's clear. Vermont can't afford Gaye Symington."

More ads are on their way.

Symington has one coming that's on her Web site now. You can see it HERE.

I would swear that they have pudged-out Douglas' face to make him look Dick Cheney-esque.

The gist of the ad is that Symington will protect Vermonters while Douglas will leave Vermonters stuck with the bill for cleaning up after Vermont Yankee.

It quotes the Rutland Herald as saying "Douglas hinders Yankee review." Douglas' campaign points out that that headline was on a letter to the editor from a Symington supporter and that the letter looks very much like a form letter. That's not the same as the Herald making the statement.

Douglas campaign manager Dennise Casey fired off this:

“The Symington campaign is so desperate for traction that they will say
anything,” said Dennise Casey, campaign manager for Governor Jim Douglas.
“Vermonters know that Governor Douglas will always put their safety first.
Governor Douglas called for the Independent Safety Inspection that is going on
now and looks forward to the pending results.”

Casey continued: “This citation is blatantly misleading and misrepresents
Rutland Herald reporters and editorial page writers. Gaye Symington should be
embarrassed by this.”

It amazes me how much both campaigns use these quotes from newspapers, as if they are relying on us to be the arbiter. I hope they keep this high regard for us in mind next time they complain about us.

Another thing I find odd: That Douglas's ads so frequently mention the name Gaye Symington. Those mass-media experts his campaign's been paying must have told him that was the way to go, but it seems as though he's giving her name recognition she doesn't otherwise have.

******update*******
I asked Symington's campaign if they altered the photo to give Douglas that Cheney look. Here's the response from spokesman Michael Carrese:

Nope. The producer says the following:
The photo came from this slide show on the official VT website (about 8 or 9 slides in)
http://governor.vermont.gov/media/slideshow/spectrum-signing.html. We isolated the image and flipped it, but did not alter it in any way.

Comments:
Funny, Douglas isn't afraid of Pollina at all.

Wonder why.

Of course not, after all Pollina=Douglas.

Meow Duhnnise. Put those claws back in.

Vermont will be much better under a Pollina Administration than the two-party corporate sellouts, oops I mean bailouts.

If you want things the same vote Dougington of the Republicorats.

They both blame each other and it is like watching a married couple. No wonder Chuck Lacy won't release his tax returns, he is jealous of Douglas and Symington's relationship.

Sticking with more of the same is not an answer.

And Anthony keeps going to court to overturn a campaign fiance law that he advocated for ... then he claims that the law doesn't apply to him.

Pollina is no different from any other politician. He's dishonest.

Heck, Tony can't even decide which party he belongs to.

Milk anyone?

They did more than flip. Compare the pictures. It's been doctored. Sleazy.

Dennise Casey is toxic!

She is maybe the best reason why Gaye has a chance in this strange election year of stark differences between the 2 major party candidates for President.

Douglas is following the Rove tactics to a "T" as is McCain-PAlin.

Today's Freeps editorial says it all!

Huh. Seems to me that Gaye's new ad ties in very nicely with the Democracy for America ad. Would be a smart move to coordinate between DFA and the campaign on something like that.

Well, I mean it would be nice . . . except that such coordination stinks to high heaven and makes a mockery of campaign finance laws.

Who on earth put that make up on Gaye Symington - now that is scary!

I love it when Progressive Party leaders get on these blogs to defend their poor suffering Anthony! Get real.

Douglas will finish with less than 50% as his negatives are at an all time high.

With a little luck, Gaye could edge him out!

C'mon Anthony - do the right thing - you will not get more than 10% of the vote - back out now and throw your support to Gaye!

Do the right thing for VT (and not your ego) for once in your life!

I think Deceit Casey has daddy issues. Wonder if she suckles?

What about the ego of Gaye Symington thinking she would make a good governor!

Go Pollina!!!!!

He'll be gone soon enough.

To Anonymous 1:22p ----

Symington is actually a very smart woman. She is frankly a policy wonk and maybe not very street smart.

Douglas is politically smart - and very much a conservative idealogue - while being a smooth operator. He will say whatever needs to be said to satisfy the group he is talking with. He always takes credit for good stuff the legislature passes -- and it is always someone else's fault - either the Dean Administration or the democrats for the bad stuff.

Pollina is an egotist who could really care less about the big picture. Oh, he says all the right things BUT he has never voted on anything. It is beneath him to start at the bottom and earn the respect and experience he needs.

"What about the ego of Gaye Symington thinking she would make a good governor!"

What about the cluelessness of anyone who thought and continues to think doogie would be a good governor in the first place.

That's not just clueless, it's bordering on criminal negligence, little factually-challenged/nameless-nitwit fella.

Always a pleasure.

Gee, I hate to confuse ya with the facts between bong hits, bonehead, but vote for Pollina and you'll get doogie.

It don't get any more of the same than another two years of that incompetent trash.

You're up, bonehead.

Hey Coop...

You actually make sense on this one!

A vote for Pollina does put Douglas back in the Governor's seat!

Pollina should step aside and throw his support to Symington - if he really cared for Vermonters.

Pollina can't win!

Symington is pitiful. I go by houses of stalwart Democrats who don't have her sign up, while they have Obama, Costello and Salmon. What an embarassment.

Yeah, well, given the fact that your ignorant anonymous ass still can't master the mysteries of spellcheck or spell embarrassment, you certainly are, little nameless-nitwit fella.

Evidently, you're another anonymous acolyte of the dimwitted, delusional-dreck dealin' "those who can't think, reason, spell or do, become psychotic gop-slop spewin', charade-playin' schmucks" school of "thought" so prevalent in coalition of the clueless cretin circles, shmendrik.

Gee, what are the odds.

Let me 'splain somethin' to ya, Lucy in the Sky with bupkis, if ya think your anecdotal rubbish is proof of anything but the fact that, apart from anecdotal rubbish, you not only remain dumb, scum and continue to have bupkis, little fella, you're even less lucid than you think I think you are, Lucy.

Still, you've never let reason, the facts, shame, embarrassment or spellcheck slow ya down before, so it'd be unreasonable to expect ya to change lanes and get all rational and substantive at this stage of the game now, gomer.

Always a pleasure.

Hey, little nameless-nitwit fella, your firm grasp of the obvious never ceases to amaze and amuse.

I've been posting here for just about eleven months now. In view of that milestone, feel free to compile a boxed set edition of all my pro-pollina comments. It won't take ya long.

Always a pleasure.

I am a Democrat and I will put up the Costello and Salmon sign in front of my house but there is no way I will put up a Symington sign.

I don't know how Gaye Symington could be credited with great policy - you must be kidding. Thats why we are glad she is leaving the legislature.

Sure, ya are, little nameless-nitwit fella. Sure, ya are.

And I'm the reigning World Series MVP, the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World and the true heir to the Throne of England, too.

Always a pleasure.

Yeah, both of ya, schmuck.

I hate to rain on your pathetic putz parade, little fella, but irrespective of how she does on election day, she's gonna be replaced by another Dem and they're gonna have a veto proof majority.

Always a pleasure.

Coopy boasts: "And I'm the reigning World Series MVP, the undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the World and the true heir to the Throne of England, too. "

Nice try sweetie pie. We all know the only title you hold is Village Idiot, but if you say it long enough maybe it will come true.

Pollina has less than 10% of the vote in the polls. Given how much you all think VTer's hate Douglas, that shouldn't be a problem for Gaye to overcome. Or is it just you 5 or 10 unemployed chronics that live on this board that really dislike JD?

Nice try, iggy slop.

In other words, you're still dumb, you're still scum, ya still got bupkis and ya don't know sarcasm when ya see it, schmuck.

Thanks for clearin' that up, little fella.

Always a pleasure.

ahh, you little sweetie, you.
