The next Chernobyl?

When I saw that Democracy for America was launching an ad criticizing Gov. Jim Douglas over Vermont Yankee, I thought, OK, we’re going to see the famous photo of the collapsed tower, we’re going to hear talk about the VY inspection about which he was less than enthusiastic, we’re going to hear about how he vetoed the bill that would have required VY to fully fund decommissioning.

You do hear all those things in the ad, which DFA’s Adam Quinn says will start airing on Vermont TV on Wednesday.

What you might not expect is the ending. It goes like this: "Why isn’t Jim Douglas keeping you and your family from becoming the victims of the next nuclear accident?" Douglas’ photo sits between photos of Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.

Does it go too far? Quinn suggested that that was the intention. Sort of cause a nuclear fusion inside people’s heads.

The state doesn’t have purview over safety of the nuclear power plant – only the reliability of the power it produces. Regardless, Quinn said, Douglas could do something to better ensure the safety if he showed leadership in interjecting himself on the issue. DFA has endorsed Democrat Gaye Symington for governor.

"I think it’s clear with all the problems at Vermont Yankee, Vermonters are at danger of something," Quinn said. "We don’t really know."

Douglas campaign manager Dennise Casey said it’s the sort of ad that Democrats would call Rovian, as in in-the-style-of-Karl Rove and that Democratic Committee Chairman Ian Carleton and Symington should be calling on DFA to pull the ad.

You can see the ad yourselves HERE. You decide: Is it fear-mongering?

Comments:
I LOVE IT! Way to go Democracy for America! Douglas deserves to be cast as "Chernobyl Jim." His stewardship of Vermont's nuclear program has been awful and deceitful.

Every time Duhnnise opens her mouth, nuclear waste comes out.

I have YET to hear of an alternative source of power for Vermonters THIS YEAR from any of the hydrophobic granolas foaming at the mouth about wanting to shut down Vermont Yankee. They babble on about "green" sources of power, but none of them ever comes up with a REASONABLE alternate for Vermonters! Even a few windmills in Sheffield has the flatlanders screaming bloody murder about destroying "our" ridgelines, as if they suddenly became stewards of the state the day they moved here from whereever! Fools!

I wouldn't mind a million wind turbines if it meant taking Vermont Yankee off line.

We need to get started. The Yankee plant is deteriorating fast.

Why did Douglas neglect securing the dams on the Connecticut River for Vermont when he had the chance? We could be harnessing cheap hydro power right now, but Douglas decided against the purchase. Too in bed with the nuke lobbyists, I guess.

Pollina has done nothing, Symington can't get anything done so there is the state of things.

"Pollina has done nothing, Symington can't get anything done so there is the state of things."

The only thing Pollina has ever "gotten done" is create or prolong the careers on incompetent-trash gops like dubie and doogie.

As for Symington, she's been a poor candidate in her first statewide race, but it's not her fault that doogie and the gop-slime minority in the House don't give a damn about Vermont or its future.

Coop, you finally realize the dolt the Dems dragged into the race. "first" statewide race? There won't be two. She wanted to retire and is taking one for the party by running.

Is it your clueless-cretin contention that this is the first time I've been critical of Symington's performance as a candidate, little factually-challenged fella?

Good luck makin' that case, clueless.

As bad as she's been, she's runnin' against the incompetent-trash doogie/dubie debacle.

If the Freeps Folks and the rest of the sclm holds these three to the facts, doogie's toast and she wins in a walk.

Of course, if they held doogie to the facts, he'd never have been gummin' up the works in the first place.

Two more years and he'll to Vermont's economy what shrub has done to the national economy.

Always a pleasure.

How could Douglas EVER do anything TO the Vermont economy except improve it? Thanks to Kunin, Dean, Scudder, Shumlin, Symington, and the rest of the confederacy of dunces, there is no other direction except UP!!!

Sorry, but Gaye's latest TV advertisement is far more scary than this one.

Where did they get the make-up artist - from the set of the Rocky Horror Picture show?

"How could Douglas EVER do anything TO the Vermont economy except improve it?"

Sure, just like shrub "improved" the national economy by getting rid of that pesky budget surplus, balanced budget and insufferable peace and prosperity Clinton saddled us with, bubbakis.

"Thanks to Kunin, Dean, Scudder, Shumlin, Symington, and the rest of the confederacy of dunces, there is no other direction except UP!!!"

Sure, just like FDR caused the Crash of '29, the Great Depression and forced the Japanese to launch a 12/7/41 sneak attack on Pearl Harbor, little factually-challenged fella.

Ya gonna tell me how FDR invaded Poland, hosted the Wannsee Conference, planned the Final Solution, perpetrated the Holocaust, fired on Fort Sumter and Assassinated Arch Duke Ferdinand in Sarajevo now, too, nitwit.

Oy Gevalt! You are the ignorant-trash gift that keeps on givin', little factually-challenged fella.

Say goodnight, greasy.

"Is it fear-mongering?" Ummmm...YEAH!!! Pictures of Chernobyl and Three Mile Island?? Give me a break! The left wing has actually fallen off the plane with this one, and I think it's going to backfire even worse than the ad Gaye is currently running. The previous poster hit the nail on the head with the Rocky Horror Picture Show comment. Who the hell is running the show over at her campaign? That ad should never have seen the light of day.

Three thoughts:

1. Based on the responses so far, 'Rovian' is only a bad thing when done by a Repub to a Dem. No problem when done in the other direction.

2. Gaye's campaign ads make her look like a beauty queen compared to the stock photo the BFP has been using of her.

3. Once again, Bubba is right. Everyone likes to take cheapshots at nuclear but repeated can not offer a commercially viable alternative. You hate turbines on the ridgelines, don't like hydro, forget clean coal. It's only okay to have an opinion if you have an alternative.

"Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspectors are determining why a shipment of lead shielding from Pilgrim nuclear station in Plymouth, Mass., to Vermont Yankee nuclear power plant in Vernon exceeded radiation levels established by the federal Department of Transportation."

Three Mile Island didn't have the record of safety violations that VY does.

Look what they are doing in Germany. Wind turbines run their economy. They are creating jobs and leading the world in renewables.

They are exporting the technology and their economy is doing very well.

Cling to the old technology if you want, but it's a giant mistake.

I thought the new Gaye ad was featuring Alice Cooper, but someone told me I was wrong. Could have sworn it was him.

Anon said: "Look what they are doing in Germany. Wind turbines run their economy. They are creating jobs and leading the world in renewables."

Germany has more wind turbines than any other country and they still only produce 5% of their electrical needs.
Nuclear and coal are still their main source. France is 75% nuclear. Norway is 95% oil from barges off the coast and their economy is solid. As Bubba states, come up with a viable alternative before you tear down what works!

How about Connecticut River hydro power? But Douglas decided not to purchase the dams. Nice foresight Jimmy.

100% of Norway's power is hydro.

87% of Germany's power is wind.

It's hard to say that VY "works" when their have been major maintenance problems every week for the past 8 months.

Denmark gets 20% of their power from wind, and that grows by roughly 1.5% per year.

Consindering that VY provides 30% of Vermont's electricity, it's clearly possible to wean ourselves from Vermont Yankee within the next 5 years.

If we don't develop wind power as an alternative, VY won't have competition when it comes time to renegotiate the next contract and Vermonters will pay huge money for electricity.

"Thoughts", eh? Nice try, little nameless-nitwit fella.

And just what Dem is applying Rovian tactics here, schmuck?

Gee, bubkis. I'm shocked.

If you can provide evidence of Rove working for anyone but gop-slime, little factually-challenged fella, feel free to cough it up.

Even if you and the rest of the ignorant anonymous trash community/gop-scum apologist association apply the same low psycho-sarah standard to "evidence" ya do to what passes for "thought", you'd better pack for a polar expedition, little fella. You'd have better lock climbin' Everest in January backwards, barefoot in your boxers, little bigot boy.

"2. Gaye's campaign ads make her look like a beauty queen compared to the stock photo the BFP has been using of her."

And that constitutes evidence of "Rovian" tactics in the eyes of your clueless-cretin cabeza, little fella?

Even by psycho-sarah debate performance standards, you'd have to add walkin' on your hands while makin' your Everest ascent and descent before even beginning to try to make that slop stick, schmuck.

So, apart from the standard ignorant anonymous trash community's continuing clueless-cretin contentions that Symington is a "tranny", "a gargoyle", and no beauty queen, does your ignorant anonymous ass have anything else to offer on the subject?

I'm shocked.

"3. Once again, Bubba is right. Everyone likes to take cheapshots at nuclear but repeated can not offer a commercially viable alternative. You hate turbines on the ridgelines, don't like hydro, forget clean coal. It's only okay to have an opinion if you have an alternative."

Ya mean like "star wars" and "the surge", schmuck."

Apart from the ludicrous, factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest, lunatic-fringe notion of bubbakis bein' "right" about anything involving reason and reality, when even entergy apologist extraordinaire, doogie the dim, is forced to admit that Vermont Yankee looks like Homer Simpson is running the place, the only place VY works is in the bizarro world where the ignorant anonymous trash community resides, little factually-challenged fella.

This is Vermont, schmuck. Bizarro world rules don't apply here any more than your psychotic-slop standards of evidence.

You can show yourself out now.

"Look what they are doing in Germany. Wind turbines run their economy. They are creating jobs and leading the world in renewables. "

I travel to Germany monthly. I hate to shatter your image but wind power in Germany is what it is here a small peice of their power system that has yet to find commercial acceptance or feasibility.

Oh Coopy, there you go again.... hurling insults to mask the fact that you have no facts to offer the board.

As I think about it, you, yourself, are quite a Rovian little guy.

At least you have picked an upstanding role model.

Your pal,
Captain America

Still....searching for the first fact Coopy has to offer up. You little charmer, you.

I just looked at the DFAm ad - it's no worse than any of Jim Douglas' nasty ads.

Dennise Casey is toxic - and right out of the mold of Rove -- issues don't matter, only negatives on your opponent!

The reason Douglas is so negative - is he is very concerned that Gaye may be sneaking up on him.

He also does not want to end up under 50%.

There is nothing wrong with the ad. Douglas is has no moral high ground.

And yeah that Symington ad is Holler-ween material. Scared the poo right out of me.

Cripes, imagine if she opened the door when out for trick or treat?

heh, that's no treat for sure.

So Coopy... any facts for the board? Just one. Try real hard.

Evidently, the ignorant anonymous trash community brainless trust elected you their official spokesperson, little factually-challenged fella.

Well, ignorant anonymous trash with bupkis is as ignorant anonymous trash with bupkis does, so I suppose you're as qualified for the gig as the next nameless-nitwit, little factually-challenged fella.

Congrats on your new gig, little clueless-cretin fella.

Here's another one for ya, mcsame needed a KO last night. He didn't get it. Mcsame is toast.

As Bones McCoy used to put it. "HE'S DEAD, JIM!!"

Stick a fork in him. Call his next of kin. He's done.

Always a pleasure.
