Two vetoes

Democrats were suspicious of/angry at the timing, but Gov. Jim Douglas vetoed two bills late Friday afternoon - campaign finance and instant runoff voting.

The timing, the Dems claim, is meant to keep the moves under the radar because no one reads the Saturday papers.

I won't argue that the governor must have had some motive for doing this on Friday afternoon, and heaven knows, it wasn't for my convenience, but I feel quite sure that you all turn religiously to the newspapers every day, no rest.

I do know this - that the governor's office has not posted the veto message on the governor's Web site. Must not have been convenient for them late on a Friday afternoon.

WCAX covered the vetoes in their Friday evening 6 o'clock news. Whats to be angry about? It doesn't take much to snap the Dem's garters, Symington is probably in tears tonight. These were a couple of bills that deserved to be deep-sixed, congrats to the Guv for having the stones to do the job that our legislators didn't.

I only threw it out there because JW asked; I was just curious what his response would be if somebody answered his questions completely, e.g. with evidence the speaker broke down in tears, and specific answers to his when, where and why follow ups.

It was pretty much what I expected.

As far as the underlying thread goes, the timing of the announcement of the vetoes could be merely a matter of getting to it when time permits; the "bad news goes out Friday evening" conventional wisdom is kind of dated with the 24-hour news cycle and alternative media.

It's not exactly a surprise he was going to do it and the proponents are going to flog it in the media from now until the override session, so the notion of "keeping it under the radar" is pretty farfetched.

Actually, it was Freyne quoting Ross Sneyd's AP story. Sneyd was being polite, as was Freyne, in his reporting by not writing that she "cried" or "choked back tears;" it was widely known at the State House she did.

The cause of the Vermont House Speaker's "frustration" was the crash-and-burn of the education spending "reform" bill she wants passed this year. Unfortunately for Gaye, her beloved "reform" bill is so Caspar Milquetoast weak, lame and inconsequential, it fails to excite even enough of the 100 Democrats and Progs to get the 76 votes needed for passage in the 150-member House.

I'm still not seein' any evidence of Symington in tears, little factually-challenged/never fail to fail nitwits.

Some schmuck, gives me multiple paragraphs of possibilities from multiple sources not saying Symington was in tears.
