Voter training wheels

Here's a constitutional amendment the Vermont Senate is considering: if you're 17 at the time of the primary, but would be 18 by the election, you could vote in the primary.

Not clear at this point whether there is time left in the session (they're talking May 2 adjournment, but talk does not always equal action) for this voting thing to go through.

What do you think of it - should 17-year-olds who are going to be making the November decision have a say in the March or September decision?

Bubba's right - this is indeed a liberal plot. All the NEA members in the schools will try to convince the high school seniors in their classes to vote for the most liberal candidates on the ballot, and, if it's the March election, to be sure to vote for the school budget also so the teachers can keep getting their big salaries.

Another note re: voting privileges: until the late 60's or 70's if you wanted to vote in Vermont, you paid your poll tax (you could also lose your driver's licence for not paying). Say what you want, but Vermont was a hell of a better place then! Unlimited voters = more idiot politicians.

Exactly....to the terms of use and the voting/drinking age. This is just one more insignificant issue the Legislature can waste it's time on so they can avoid the real issues.

A previous blog was looking for cost savings. My vote is to reduce the size of the legislature dramatically and then reduce it to meeting every two years. It will cost us less and give them less time to mess things up.

Our issues are complex and a citizen legislature can't deal with it. Throw the bums out!
