Jericho seeks candidate

Over in Jericho tonight, Democrats were meeting to talk about possible legislative candidates.

This is significant because it means somebody thinks one of the Democratic incumbent legislators from the two-person Jericho-Underhill-Bolton district must be at least considering not seeking re-election. And it's not Bill Frank.

Instead, it's Frank's district-mate, Gaye Symington. Symington, the speaker of the House, is "seriously considering" running for governor. Some people say that even if she doesn't run for governor she may not seek re-election to the Legislature.

Town Democratic Chairwoman Deb Fitzgerald said the meeting was intended to share political ideas of all kinds, but that the notion of who might be interested in serving in the Legislature would likely come up.

Frank said it was just in case there was an opening - that Symington hadn't indicated, not even to her homies (he didn't really use that word, but I am) what she planned to do.

Man. This is one weird string of back and forth today.

I predict Symington will enter the race and, combined with Pollina, will keep Douglas under 50 percent. But I think Symington will do something stupid like promise to hand the election to Douglas if he wins the popular vote. Given what Douglas has been saying lately about not suporting the popular vote, I hope she won't. Let the legislature decide, but that's a scary prospect too. They are kind of wimpy when it comes to exhibiting leadership.

First Obama reluctantly agreed to appear on FOX; Tomorrow Hillary appears on O'Reilly; although they won't get the softballs thrown at them that they are used to in the "mainstream" media and PBS they realize that more democrats watch FOX than all of the other networks because FOX is head and shoulders ahead of slime like Olbermann, Matthews, Moyers and the rest of the anti-American media. Well, I'm sure it won't suffice as proof in your eyes, but here's what VPIRG's Executive Director Paul Burns himself wrote this weekend on the blog Green Mountain Daily. I've put the link at the end of the post. He acknowledges his role in crafting the bill on VPIRG's behalf in the first paragraph.

"Some Info on the Campaign Finance Bill (3.67 / 3)

There's plenty of room for reasonable people to disagree about how best to solve the problem of money (and the undue influence it carries) in politics. But we should at least be on the same page in terms of what the bill (S.278) would and would not have done. And since there have been a number of misstatements here about the bill, I offer a few thoughts as one of those who worked (on VPIRG's behalf) with the legislative committees that crafted it.

First, S.278 is nothing like the 1997 law that was struck down by the US Supreme Court in 2006, except that both contain limits on political contributions. The plurality decision authored by Justice Breyer in that case suggested that the Court had a number of concerns with the contribution limits in the '97 law that, taken together, made the limits unconstitutional.

Vermont legislators responded to each one of those concerns in S.278. To suggest that legislators were thumbing their noses at the Court is flat out wrong.

For instance, the amount that individuals, corporations and PACs can give to candidates went from $200 for House races up to $500 (with $250 for the primary and $250 for the general election). For gubernatorial candidates the contribution limits quintupled from $400 to $2,000.

The limits in S.278 are virtually identical to limits upheld by the Court in the Nixon v. Shrink case out of Missouri in 2000. So, there is ample evidence to support the belief they will be upheld if challenged. (Note - This is another area where mydog's facts are off.)

Other concerns brought up by the Court had to do with the restrictions put on political parties under the '97 law. That's why political parties are allowed to conduct party-building activities without having them count as direct contributions under S.278. Many of us may think the Court continues to get it wrong on campaign finance cases, but until the majority shifts, it makes sense to be responsive to the guidance they offer.

So, are independent candidates better off without the bill? Absolutely not. This is where Rep. Pillsbury (someone I've enjoyed working with for years on this issue) got it all wrong. When he criticizes S.278 he's comparing it with his vision of the perfect bill, which is neither on the table nor constitutionally permissible.

The choice that Pillsbury and his colleagues faced was S.278 or the status quo, and he chose the status quo. That means political parties are free to give UNLIMITED cash to their candidates. Compare that with the $2,000 limit for state Senate candidates contained in S.278. Will Pillsbury or independent candidates now be better off running against party candidates who can accept gifts of any amount from their parties? Of course not.

In fact, all state and national data presented to the legislative committees verified the fact that contribution limits help challengers, not incumbents as the governor, the Republican Party, the VT Right to Life Committee (and some writers here) believe.

VPIRG shares Pillsbury's desire to have public financing of legislative races in Vermont. We will continue to fight for that and for reasonable contribution limits (as the two complement each other) in the months ahead. But our job was just made more difficult by Pillsbury's misguided decision to side with Douglas and the R's on this vote.

Most still do that, it's just that your buddy W has been so horrific, worse even than Andrew Johnson, it just looks like the mainstream media is ganging up on him. Although they do have a few very good reporters, FNC in general doesn't really try to be objective. They are well paid to be biased. I'm surprised you don't single out Lou Dobbs for praise given his anti-immigrant rants. He doesn't try to be objective either, yet somehow CNN allows him to remain.
