Political notes from Free Press staff writers Terri Hallenbeck, Sam Hemingway and Nancy Remsen

Out of pocket

So there is video of the Bennington Banner interview with Gov. Jim Douglas over the expense reimbursement issue, if you care to hear it. It's HERE.

There's no question that the question was about campaign expenses, not personal expenses. And Douglas responded, "I'm doing what I understand to be the appropriate thing, which is if there's a telephone call made out of the governor's office that is political I reimburse for it, as I've done."

He has done it five times in his career, campaign manager Dennise Casey said, for "political" phone calls to people that include Skip Vallee and Walt Freed in 2003 and 2007 that he considered personal. They were not specifically connected to the campaign, but they weren't official business either, she argued.

- Terri Hallenbeck

Comments:
Dennise Casey must be jokingonly five "political" calls in four years ?
What about the 14 permanent public(communication experts ) relation spokespeople.

THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS! Dennise flat out lied to you terri when she said douglas was talking about "personal expenses." the video is clear cut. it is so obvious that they are caught on this one and changing their story every five minutes and offering no proof of anything. they never counted on people watching the video when they were spewing their lies.

please ask them to produce the records showing what he reimbursed for and when.

they want us to believe that in 6 years (never mind the 30 before that) there have NEVER been any times when jim douglas used public resources for campaign/political activity. no meals, no mileage on state cars, no other travel expenses, no photocopies, postage, letterhead.

COME ON. why is everyone going so easy on this guy. he's been cheating the public for years. shay totten caught him, symington followed-up and now the press is fumbling the ball.

this is so frustrating.

I can't find the video from homepage link you posted. Can you post a DIRECT link to video?

Thanks!

Ok...phone calls. Umm what about your travel?

This once Douglas supporter is now voting for Gaye Symington.

The Douglas Campaign/Administration keeps changing it's story.

This is sick.

We don't have enough money for decent roads but Douglas is spending our money on his own re-election.

Could we get to some real issues?

VOTE SYMINGTON November 4th

You forgot to mention Koop the kook when you were bragging on what the Freep had to offer election night.

Anonymous said: "COME ON. why is everyone going so easy on this guy. he's been cheating the public for years. shay totten caught him, symington followed-up and now the press is fumbling the ball.

Yeah, we know it is frustrating for all of you "front pagers" at Green Mountain Daily, and that if you ran the Free Press things would be different.

Symington for Governor!

Jim Douglas is now showing his administration to be as corrupt as those of his good friend in DC - George Bush - whose campaign he had previously served as Chairman.

Time to go, JIM!

Are you kidding?

"Could we get to some real issues?"

Jim Douglas using taxpayer monies for campaign expenses is a huge issue!

Jim Douglas is lying Vermonters now as his story changes.

Clearly, Jim equals joblessness is only tightfisted with his own money.

His continuing calls for privatizing Social Security, his never-ending Entergy Excuses, VNG Expenses for the War in Iraq and this there's no difference between doogie the incompetent governor and the campaign to reelect doogie the incompetent governor clearly demonstrates that he's got no such concerns about burning up Vermont Taxpayer's Money.

Why does the Freeps continue to endorse this incompetent fraud?

Symington's an incompetent candidate. Like his boy, shrub, doogie's just incompetent.

Yank the endorsement.

This is a case of where Symington's refusal to release her complete financial records is coming back to hurt her.

Even the hardcore Democrats who are allowed to post at Green Mountain Daily acknowledge that raising this issue at this late stage in the game looks like nothing but politics to the average voter.

Factor in Symington's refusal to disclose her husband's assets/holdings and it's doubly easy to dismiss this charge against Douglas as nothing but a standard political attack by a candidate trailing in the polls with nothing to lose.

Regardless of whether there's fire to go with the smoke, it's hard to see it getting traction, even if the national Dems dumped a half-million on ads between now and Tuesday trumpeting the issue.

I've seen the re-worked ads with the new information on the issue; they still don't seem that effective although they could put a dent in Douglas' armor of squeaky-clean ethics for the next cycle.

This thread bores me. How about this.

From CNN today:

Campaign: Obama didn't know aunt's immigration status

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama didn't know his aunt might be living illegally in the United States, as media outlets are reporting, his campaign said Saturday.

"Sen. Obama has no knowledge of her status but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws [should] be followed," campaign spokesman Bill Burton said.

According to The Associated Press, a court refused four years ago to accept the asylum application of Zeituni Onyango, 56, the half-sister of Obama's Kenyan father. However, she has continued to live in a public housing complex in South Boston, AP reported.

How pitiful is this? The man that wants to be President of the leader of the free world didn’t know his Auntie was an illegal immigrant.

I can only assume Barack is a habitual liar. He can’t be as clueless as he professes to be:
1. He never heard Rev. Wright say ‘those things’ in 20 years of going to church. Never once in the 500+ times he went there.

2. He didn’t know Tony Resko was a felon

3. Bill Ayers… an unrepentant terriorist. He didn’t know it.

4. Khalidi….never knew he said bad things about Israel.

5. He will give everyone making under $250K a tax break. Oops,no under $200K. Oops, I mean under $150K and then yesterday it was down to $120K.

6. Now he had no idea his Auntie who he wrote so lovingly about in his books was an illegal living in a slum in Boston. Curious that he never tried to help her out given how keen he is on spreading wealth around. Apparently it is good to spread it only if it isn’t his money being spread. Didn’t he just make a comment about anyone not wanting to pay higher taxes was selfish? He should talk to Joe Biden about being selfish. Ol’ Joe donated a whopping $500 to charity last year. Maybe he didn’t know that either.

What a hypocritical, shameless panderer.

Obama is a phony- if you do not want to pay taxes you are selfish and unpatriotic but what do you call it when you let your brother live on $1.00 per month and let your aunt live in the slums in Boston and you make $4 million in each of the last 2 years. Do we want this type of "unselfish" person running our country? NOT ME- he is a fraud. Someone should check where Obama was born while they are at it!

It's pitiful how this has come to be. The Dems and the media have made virtually any tough question about BO out of bounds. If you ask it you are either a racist or a facist and like Joe the Plumber found out, bound to be attacked in the Media. I seem to have missed when freedom of speech ensured reprisal.

It is most interesting(or is it shameful) that the 3 conservative papers that did not endorse BO have been booted of Air Obama to make room for those serious news brokers Ebony and Jet magazines.

Symington for Governor

Thanks Gaye. You have been a busy little girl today.

Have newspapers endorsed anyone in the other statewide races?

Symington
Costello

NEK has left a new comment on the post "Out of pocket":

"Obama is a phony-...."

Well, you and the other seven nitwits comprising the Vermont scum vote will get your chance to vote straight scum come Tuesday, nekkie boy.

Ya think grandpa simpson can scold enough clouds to crack 40 percent?

Now that ya mention it, how's Delaware, NJ and NH lookin' for mcsame/palin, nekkie boy?

I'll keep my powder dry and hold the rest of your pinheaded predictions in abeyance for the moment, nekkie boy.

Ya gots to love those BFP archives.

After all, why put ya outta your ignorant anonymous-trash misery now when I can, kill ya with a thousand cuts, carry ya for a couple more rounds, bust ya up, torture ya and really make it hurt for a couple more days.

The weather looks good for Tuesday and that's always bad news for gops.

What's more, I've got a magnifyin' glass with your ignorant anonymous ass's name on it, 'cause I love the smell of nuked nekwit on Election Day.

It smells like ..Victory.

Always a pleasure.

Independent Vermonter said...

"This is a case of where Symington's refusal to release her complete financial records is coming back to hurt her."

No, but the previous paragraph is yet another in a series of lame attempts to equate cluelessness with criminal negligence.

It's become customary for political candidates to reveal their tax returns and financial statements, Indy.

They're not legally obligated to do it.

Public servants, whether elected or appointed, are, however, obliged to keep their campaign expenditures separate from their official expenditures incurred in the conduct of their duties on behalf of the people they serve.

That is not just a question of smart political strategy and good form, it's a matter of law and ethical conduct on the part of public servants.

Symington has proven herself to be an incompetent candidate during this race.

Doogie, on the other hand, in the course of the past six years, has repeatedly proven himself to be an incompetent, ethically-challenged Governor of Vermont.

Big difference.

Only a hardcore partisan pretending to be an independent would argue to the contrary.

Halloween was yesterday, Indy. Time to take off the make up and put the costume away until next year.

As for your characterization of the GMD posts regarding the issue, nice try. No sale.

Nobody's criticizing Symington for thrashing doogie with the club he handed her.

To the contrary, we're just criticizing her for not doing it sooner.

Again, big difference.

Moreover, if they're not criticizing the Freeps Folks and the rest of the SCLM for sitting on the story and continuing to tell us how popular doogie is, I am.

As even doogie endorser and gopologist extraordinaire, Sue Allen of the TA was forced to finally admit on VTW last night in the presence of the BFP's Terri Hallenbeck, he's really not all that popular, after all.

At least as many people want him gone as want him to stay and that WGOP poll was conducted before this story finally broke, Indy.

Evidently, this information has been out there for a couple of weeks. It may not have been known when the poll was conducted, but it was known to the powers that be well in advance of the recent Freeps and RH/TA endorsements of another encore for the doogie/dubie debacle.

Again, in view of the facts, why haven't those endorsements been yanked?

They don't even have to endorse anyone else if they don't want to.

Just amend it from an endorsement to a vote of confidence.

Surely, Terri's enough of an Orioles fan to know that when the owner and the GM go on record giving the manager a vote of confidence that it's time for Mrs Manager to call the Realtor.

After all, there's worse places to spend the Winter than Martha's Vineyard or wintering in Naples with the Brocks.

That's always a pleasure.

Blah, Blah, Blah...

Just say NO to B.O.

"Just say NO to B.O."

Fine. You and the other seven members of the Vermont scum vote will get your chance to do just that Tuesday, little nameless-nitwit fella.

Bush did his best to turn it into amerika, but this is still America, little fella. You've got the right to be wrong and I'm sure you and the rest of the scum vote will continue to exercise your ignorance.

Just get used to livin' in a Blue State for the duration of your stay here. If that's too much for ya, best of luck in Mississippi.

Always a pleasure.

It might take a couple of years but the voters will get sick of the usual Chicago-style corruption that always accompanies a dimocrat victory. Not to mention the increase in taxes the dims will stick middle America with to pay off ACORN and the rest of the motley assortment of welfare recipients that have dutifully voted for Sheik Barack God-knows how many times Tuesday! Of course the wretched dead-beats like jw will be in welfare heaven for a while, but the American workers will soon find out what a bill of goods they have been sold by the commies and terrorist-supporters in the dim party. 40 acres and a mule!

I look forward to the day I can retire and being taken care of by Obama- just like he takes care of his relatives- $1.00/month or living in a project- your choice!

This from the same guy that said if you didn't want to pay more taxes you are selfish. He is such a hypocrite.

From Politico today...

HENDERSON, Nev. — Barack Obama did not know a relative was living in the United States illegally for the past nearly four years prior to today's Associated Press report, "but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws be followed," the campaign said Saturday in a statement.
-----------------
Does that mean he will turn her over to INS for deportation?

Just one more lie from BO... in his book he spoke lovingly of her. She was with him for his swearing in. He is an unselfish man. He told us that in all his memiors. Surely he must have been supporting her. After all he believes in spreading the wealth around. His convictions to the greater good must have compelled him to give her money to maintain her lifestyle. ..didn't he? Oh!

What a hypocrite!

bubba....

"It might take a couple of years but..."

Bubbakis will continue to be dumb, to be scum and to have bupkis.

That, ya won't have to wait for.

Always a pleasure.

It's a shame that opposing views can't be raised without being shouted down. This has become classic left wing behavior of which Coop has become a posterboy.

The thing that has made our country so strong is the existance of a 2 party system with an open and honest dialogue. Like an eagle our country needs a left wing and a right wing to fly.

The Coops of the world clearly display their fear and intolerance for anyone with a differing point of view and will only be happy when they beat them down, gain that elusive Super Majority and dicate their policy to all. At best this is incredibly Nixon-esque. At the worst he embodies the exact characteristics of the Nazi greats..something he clearly loves to accuse others of being.

Pity hapless little man Coop while he sits in his basement harboring so much hatred and intolerance towards anyone that isn't exactly like him. I think the board is wrong...Coop didn't come here from New Jersey. I think he was born, bred and schooled in the backwoods of Mississippi.

Do you still have your 'sheet' Coop?

I know Mississippians and find that an insult to them.

Very nice. You make me laugh.

Oh, you poor, poor, persecuted little putz.

Go cheney yourself, chump.

You and your coalition of the clueless cretins are the same nameless-nitwit scum ya were a year ago when ya were shouting down the Doug Hoffers of the World.

You scum-vote slime just can't handle it when somebody smacks ya back, which is why the ignorant anonymous-trash likes of you has no answer but to lie your sorry butts off and post my name, number and address over and over again, periodically threaten my wife and repeatedly offer google map directions to our place.

Ignorant, anonymous trash with bupkis spewing psychotic slop ya can't substantiate and frequently can't spell are not "opposing views", schmuck. It's just ignorant anonymous trash with bupkis spewing psychotic slop you can't substantiate and frequently can't spell, sport.

There's nothin' legitimate about you or your pathetic "views", punk.

Nothin'. Zip. Nada. Bupkis.

Never was. Never will be.

"The thing that has made our country so strong is the existance of a 2 party system with an open and honest dialogue. Like an eagle our country needs a left wing and a right wing to fly."

Nice try, nitwit. No sale.

You not only can't justify your miserable "existance", little fraudulent fella, ya can't even spell the word.

Then again, you always have been the ignorant, anonymous-trash gift that keeps on givin', crazy lady.

To the contrary, the thing that has always made this State and this Country great is our ability to overcome and rise above the brain-dead bigotry and obstructionist efforts of the klukluxkretin, neo-nazi-nitwit likes of you and your ignorant, anonymous, auntie-amerikan ass, crazy lady, and come Tuesday, we shall overcome.

This Country and this State survives and thrives in spite of you and your delusional dreck, dimwit, not because of ya.

You're not a wing, you're dead weight keepin' this Country and this State from gettin' off the ground.

The take back vermunt trash likes of you are no more patriotic Americans than the nazis were patriotic Germans.

Ya lost then. You're losin' now and you're gonna lose big come Tuesday.

Get used to it. You're gonna get plenty of practice.

At the end of the day, you're just one more vile thing that needs to be cleaned outta Missisquoi Bay with the rest of the flotsam, jetsam and algae bubbles threatening my Dog's life, liberty and pursuit of happiness, little fella.

In every sense, you're dumb, you're scum and ya got bupkis.

Now tell your story walkin' and take it where the climate suits your sheet, schmuck.

Disappear.

If they had anything on Obama, they and fixed news would have sprung it on him a long time ago.

Unlike Symington, the Freeps Folks and the rest of the Vermont SCLM, they wouldn't sit on a story until the last minute.

They didn't. Evidently, they don't.

Clearly, your ignorant anonymous continues to be dumb, to be scum and to have bupkis and I don't have to assume anything.

JW, I call myself an independent for good reason. I don't reflexively assume anyone who calls themselves a Republican is "scum" like you do, nor I consider them above reproach, as you seem to hold most Democrats. I take them as I find them.

And as for my characterization of the GMD posts regarding this matter, I said:

"Even the hardcore Democrats who are allowed to post at Green Mountain Daily acknowledge that raising this issue at this late stage in the game looks like nothing but politics to the average voter."

For example:

"Not to rain on your parade...
This feels similar to the press release about GWB and a drunk driving conviction from the 2000 campaign. Not in content, but rather, the timing of it. No matter how much you'd like this to stick, it probably won't. It's a little late in the game to throw out this sort of accusation, regardless of its validity. It's too easily brushed off as politically motivated with 5 days left. Right or wrong, many moderate Vermonters believe Douglas to be a last line of defense against one party rule in the state, which has lead to his comfortably being re-elected. A Gubernatorial candidate for the Democratic party will have to make their case against this notion early in a campaign, and I don't believe Symington has done that. It hasn't helped that she's being butchered from the right and the left, but the end result is the same, Jim D will be on the 5th floor for two more.
There's also this:
All the kiddies are psyched for halloween, and many parents will use that as an excuse tomorrow to leave work early to hit the streets (or the bars). The news cycle between now and Tuesday is very short. Most people (not those of us hanging out in political blog world) will not be exposed to political news (local or national) between tomorrow afternoon and Monday. Would this have made more of an impact if it were brought up a week ago? I doubt it. It's not a silver bullet.

by: farjas @ Thu Oct 30, 2008 at 14:14:19 PM CDT"

I don't know whether Douglas is in the wrong on this or not, but at this stage of the game I just don't think it matters to the average voter. They see it as a standard, tit-for-tat back and forth between the candidates.

Fine, Indy. If it helps you to tell yourself that, suit yourself.
I call myself a Democrat because they're the best viable option and I suspect that I vote republican about as often as you vote for a Democrat, but fine, have it your way.

"And as for my characterization of the GMD posts regarding this matter, I said:

"Even the hardcore Democrats who are allowed to post at Green Mountain Daily acknowledge that raising this issue at this late stage in the game looks like nothing but politics to the average voter."

For example:

"Not to rain on your parade...

Interesting choice of analogy, Indy. Is it your contention that GWB had not been convicted of DWI in Maine back in the '70s?

Whether you're citing your own post or not is for all practical purposes irrelevant. You're citing it, presumably, because it illustrates the point you're trying to make.

Again, Indy, doogie fashioned the club and handed it to Symington to beat him with it. The only thing Symington did wrong was wait until she was trailing with two outs in the ninth, nobody on and down to her last strike before askin' the ump for time, steppin' out and askin' the bat boy to hand her the bat doogie'd made her or, if you prefer, askin' the ump to look at the baseball before doogie through another pitch.

Either way, the club is real, the story is true, doogie's busted and Symington's only sin was not acting sooner.

"...No matter how much you'd like this to stick, it probably won't. It's a little late in the game to throw out this sort of accusation, regardless of its validity."

So, what you're saying is that your complaint with Symington is based on style as opposed to substance.

Fine. Again, I agree with you for the third or fourth time in this post alone.

Symington hasn't won any style points in this campaign and she should have acted sooner.

That, however, doesn't make doogie any less guilty or the charges against him any less valid.

Symington's an incompetent candidate who's run a terrible campaign.

Doogie, on the other hand, is an incompetent Governor who's run Vermont into the ground over the past six years the way Bush has run the Country into the ground, and he's clearly not as popular as he, the Freeps Folks and the rest of the Vermont SCLM keep telling us he is as even the WGOP poll makes abundantly clear.

Moreover, that poll was conducted before this story broke so he's not even as popular as he was when at least as many people wanted him gone as wanted him to stay.

Symington probably did wait too long to use this. Doogie probably will survive this and get reelected with 45 percent of the vote, give or take, because Pollina has divided the anti-doogie vote that is probably over 50 percent now.

So what? That doesn't make the story any less true or doogie any less guilty and incompetent.

Like Clinton, doogie's been blessed by the incompetence of his enemies.

Like Bush, he's actually guilty and incompetent.

As for your ridiculous claims that this is politically motivated, get a grip.

Sue Allen said that this information has been out for a couple of weeks now on VTW Friday night. Terri was sitting right there. She didn't take the opportunity to disagree.

That didn't stop her as TA Editor from endorsing doogie any more than it stopped the Freeps or the RH from endorsing him when they were sitting on this story.

In fairness to Terri, she's not the Editor. Sue Allen is. Sitting on the story was her call.

If this was politically motivated, they could have endorsed Symington, Pollina or nobody and released it immediately when it would do the most damage to doogie.

But hey didn't, now, did they, Indy?

Given your claims that it's too late in the campaign to make a difference now, sitting on the story and endorsing the schmuck is as much or more evidence of political motivation as reporting it because Shay Totten or others had broken the story, the news was out and they had to report it, Indy.

At the end of the day, you're as free to vote for doogie and hope that this doesn't make any difference because it broke too late as I am to vote for Symington and hope that it does and that Pollina voters come to their senses and vote for Symington instead so we can can this incompetent trash once and for all.

Despite shrub's best efforts, it's still a free Country, but that doesn't make doogie any less guilty or incompetent than sitting on the story did in shrub's DWI case.

I'll give ya this much, Indy.
At least ya didn't try to say the schmuck was swiftboated.

JW:

I would ask you to please take a little more time to read my posts carefully and ascertain when I am quoting someone else and what I am putting forth as my opinion.

I quoted a lengthy post from someone named "farjas" to prove my point, that even Democrats acknowledge that the timing of this charge appears political and therefore its effectiveness is undermined.

You can question my independence all you want. I'll be voting Obama and Douglas.

As for your intimation that somehow I'm quoting my own sock puppet post, the answer is no. Remember you need an account to post at GMD.

I've been banned from Green Mountain Daily by Odum because I called him and another poster out on their hypocrisy, specifically their position that grassroots protests are good when their friends do it, but "coercive" and "harassing" when St. Albans residents who want a Wal Mart in their town do it. And their position that Wal Mart's participation in Vermont's political/permitting process amounts to outside meddling, but that when Odum's employer, Vermont Natural Resources Council, does it it amounts to a local grassroots effort.

So Odum accused me of "threatening" his livelihood and banned me. Now I just read his blog, I don't post there.

But I still consider it a bellwether for the far-left wing of the Democratic Party, so when people like Farjas and others who are allowed to post there say the issue of Douglas' ethics on his expenses seems to lack traction and appear political, I tend to think that means even people violently opposed to Douglas believe it.

Vermont's reason for the civil union law:

Phil Scott and Dick Mazza

Question: the dims seem to have their panties bunched up about Gov. Douglas owing the state for campaign expenses. Have they ever complained about the hundreds of thousands of dollars former Gov. Dean stuck the state for during his ridiculous run for the Presidency?

I thought so.

Hypocrites.

Dean paid the state for expenditures that were made for his re-election.

Douglas has not.

Nice try - why don't you answer the question. Tax dollars are tax dollars no matter how you try to rationalize!

Nice try, nitwit. If doogie had anything on Dean, he'd have brought it up by now. He hasn't.

If he had a Federal shot at him, he'd have brought that up, too. After all, this is still shrub's incompetent-trash, gop-slime injustice department.

He didn't do that, either. Clearly, like your ignorant anonymous ass, bubbakis, doogie's got bupkis, too.
