Thoughts from the VPR debate

I thought I would offer up some of the comments that struck me as interesting from last night's gubernatorial debate on Vermont Public Radio. The participants were Republican Gov. Jim Douglas, Democratic House Speaker Gaye Symington, indepdent Anthony Pollina and Liberty Union candidate Peter Diamondstone.

Douglas was asked why he had lost faith in local school boards -- as evidenced by his support of the two-vote on a budget requirement that some school districts will face. He responded that he did respect local voters, "but we have to have respect for the taxpayer. Property taxes are out of control." Aren't taxpayers local voters?

Symington was asked why she first supported while standing shoulder-to-shoulder with Douglas the two-vote requirement, then flipflopped. "I supported the two-vote mechanism as a compromise" in the final hours of the legislative session. She said the House always intended to dig deeper into how it would work. The House Education Committee did, didn't like what it found, and proposed something else. "These arbitrary voting mechanisms are not what we should be doing," Symington said.

Pollina made a reference two his two-percent investment fund proposal to raise money to invest in renewable energy projects. Douglas commented, "What we don't need is a two percent tax." When Pollina got a chance to respond later, he shot back that his proposal wasn't a tax, it was a proposal to ask Vermont institutions with endowments to consider investing two percent in a fund that make loans available for renewable energy projects. Raising his voice, Pollina said, "I really don't like the fear mongering coming from the governor, making you think there is going to be money coming out of your pocket."

Diamondstone agreed with Pollina's call to close the capital gains tax loophole -- somethinig Douglas proposed. Of course, they all have different ideas about what to do with the money. Douglas wanted to give it back to a different group of taxpayers. Pollina would invest in roads and affordable housing. Diamondstone agreed with Pollina on investing in infrastructure and said, "Anthony is right about closing loopholes, but there are more loopholes than that." Would his proposal to clamp down on wealth drive the well-to-do out of Vermont? He repled,"What a wonderful way to solve the housing problem."

Perhaps you've already seen my report on how the candidates responded to the question of what they would want to see if none of them (or the other three gubernatorial candidates) received more than 50 percent of the vote. Symington didn't answer, Pollina and Diamonstone said let the Legislature carry out its assignment and make the pick. Douglas said he thought Vermonters would expect lawmakers to pick the person with the most votes. The Symington campaign put out a fact check sheet today suggesting Douglas has flipflopped. Symington's staff pont to a quote from Douglas in 2002 when polls showed him trailing Racine. "I'm going to let the General Assembly decide how to exercise their power."

By the way, a group of legislators at the debate suggested to me that only the House makes the decision about who becomes governor in the event no one has a majority. Not so, said House Clerk Donald Milne. It's a Joint Assembly decision.

A Pittsford librarian had wondered if any of the candidates would commit to giviing local libraries $1.6 million next year. Not likely, but only Symington said it clearly. Given the current state of the economy and state revenues, she said, "It's difficult to imagine funding new programs." Diamondstone said it would depend. "When I see everything laid out, I could make a decision." Douglas said, "This is a difficult time for our state," then repeated his four criteria for deciding who and what get money.

Have you heard about Douglas' question of Symington asking if she supported the Bennington Bypass, Circumferential Highway and a Walmart in St. Albans? Kind of an interesting way to put her on the spot with some regional voters. Her answer, by the way, was to suggest the priority should be on fixing the road and bridges that we have -- which is the same priority Douglas has promoted. As for Walmart, Symington said that's a local decision.

There was more. It lasted 90 minutes, afterall, but it's time to start thinking about money -- how much the candidates have amassed since their last reports.

-- Nancy Remsen

Comments:
If building WalMarts were truly local questions, without roadblocks put up by CLF, VPIRG, the democrat party, etc., there would already be a WalMart in St. Albans and Newport-Derby. But far be it for the average guy just looking for a nearby and inexpensive place to shop for his family to challenge the wisdom of the flatlander elite. (Who of course wouldn't be caught dead mingling with the hoi polloi!)

Interesting that the right wingers think that Wal Mart is the biggest issue facing Vermont.

It's no wonder that the GOP is suffering.

Hey Blubba. You're a big fan of the Sludge Report. You were posting all over this site when Matt Sludge posted the story about John Edwards affair. Why are you so quiet about the National Enquirer's latest story about Sarah Palin's affair with Todd's business partner? Sludge won't even post it on his site, unlike the blaring headline he put up when Edwards got caught by the NE.

Probably because there were witnesses to Edward's affair forcing him to admit to it. Once in a while, like the blind squirrel getting the occasional acorn, the Enquirer is somewhat correct. If you believe anything the Enquirer prints without corroboration, then you are truly a world class FOOL, approaching the ultimate fooldom of jw.

The media is only accurate when it is trashing Democrats.

It isn't accurate when it is trashing Republicans.

If you don't understand that, you are a FOOL!

COURIC: You've cited Alaska's proximity to Russia as part of your foreign policy experience. What did you mean by that?

COURIC: Mock?

PALIN: Yeah, mocked, I guess that's the word, yeah.

COURIC: Explain to me why that enhances your foreign policy credentials.

PALIN: Well, it certainly does because our-- our next door neighbors are foreign countries. They're in the state that I am the executive of. And there in Russia. The Russians, I mean.

Oy Vey! Palin is scary stupid! no wonder McInsane is trying to get her debate cancelled.

What? Are you saying that Russia ISN'T close to Alaska ???

Pollina wiped the floor with all of them again last night. It's no wonder they cancel debates.

And dogs live in stables housing thoroughbred race horses. That don't make 'em favorites to win the 2009 Triple Crown, clueless.

Palin's 15 minutes are up. She's just another crooked Alaska gop-slime joke who isn't qualified to be Mayor of Wasila, Alaska.

How come the article in the Free Press, wrote about Jessica's Law and failed to discuss the issues like this blog?

Do the editors of the Free Press purposely try to decieve the public, or are the looking on being the PR firm for Jim Douglass?

Thee free press is costing us our democracy.

I thought that Gaye did a great job in the debate and put Douglas on the spot. More importantly, she stood her ground.

And you know what is more interesting? The campaigns released their fund raising numbers today. Despite getting endorsed by the VSEA, NEA and AFL-CIO, Pollina only has $6000 left in his campaign chest yet Symington has actually done better in fund raising. In fact, in 72 hours, she raised $22,000.

Interesting.

$22K is interesting alright. It is interesting that the candidate for Gov for a major party could only raise $22K. Clearly the populace is voting with its checkbook and Douglas is winning.

We are, eh? Nice try, little nameless-nitwit fella.

Is it your clueless-cretin contention that the bulk of doogie's dough comes from "hard-working Vermonters"?

If so, feel free to prove it.

Gee, bupkis. I'm shocked.

Disappear.

Always a pleasure.

"I thought that Gaye did a great job in the debate and put Douglas on the spot. More importantly, she stood her ground."

What debate were you listening to? Gaye was stammering all over herself and still can't clearly articulate the issue. BTW, standing your ground to Douglas isn't that hard, but the Dems threw the wrong candidate into the ring. Standing your ground is one thing but being able to forcfully and clearly give it back is an added bonus. Pollina's a little better than her in that repsect. Diamondstone is a blase sideshow candidate who even if you wanted to take seriously, has a very disjointed message.

Oh! McCain blinked. He's willing to debate again. How nice.

Suspending his campaign was a stupid stunt that backfired.

He's exposed to be the boob that he has always been.

"He's exposed to be the boob that he has always been."

Poor choice of words there, pal. Ya better watch it or bubbakis, nekiwit, and the rest of the newly born-again fascist femininazis are gonna spend the next three weeks cryin' about how your remark is clearly sexist and aimed at Palin to the exclusion of any and all else.

Clearly, not only can they not deal with more than one problem at a time, they can only tell and focus on one fairy tale at a time.

Screw tonight's debate. The real debate is next Thursday. Biden will take Palin to school!

"Screw tonight's debate. The real debate is next Thursday. Biden will take Palin to school!"

Well, she's bound to be nervous on her first day.

Still, at least the fixed news nitwits can talk about her stunning back to school ensemble.

Yeah and Pollina, with all of his endorsements can't even translate that into financial support. $6,000 in one month? C'mon guys. VSEA, AFL-CIO and the NEA have shot themselves in the foot and have only angered the Dems who control the Legislature. Yeah, those 6 Progs are really going to be a force to be reckoned with in the Legislature next year. Their candidate can barely rase any money to keep his campaign moving. Will he ever be up on the air? Because that 7 percent in the WCAX poll looks pretty accurate based on his fundraising prowess.

Doogie better hope Pollina stays in because doogie's stock is droppin' faster than psycho sarah's and if gop-slime things keep goin' the way they've been goin' and it becomes a two-person race, he could be toast.

The mincing little girlie-men just get in SUCH a snit over a strong woman like Sarah Palin! Get over it, fruit-cakes, she's about to become your Vice-President!

Yeah, and oil will be $20/barrel and the DOW will be over 17500 by the morning of Monday, 9/29/08, bubbakis.

Only in the gop-slime/bizarro world alternate reality where your ignorant anonymous ass resides, little fella.

So, schmuck, just which dick is your ignorant anonymous ass supporting in this cockfight, bubbakis? Bush or Blunt?

The Dems can just step back and watch dueling ignorant-trash gop-slime factions destroy each other.

It just doesn't get any better than that. Or does it?

Tonight! Live! From the Ceremonial Seat of Segregation Itself - Oxford, Mississippi - The United Klans of America brings you, the Candidates' Debate!

Clueless McSame - aka, the old white dope writes his own political obituary, purchases and punches his own one-way ticket to Palookaville and proves that this is no country for clueless, punch-drunk old men to be President.

LET'S GET READY TO BUMBLE!!!

Clueless is goin' down in Oxford faster than Sonny Liston, Schmuck.

Trent Lott's Alma Matter is gonna see a Young Black Man dancin' over the prone, pummeled frame of the old white dope on his way to bein' President Obama.

All that's left is for Billy Idol to sing "Phony Phony", "Dies Without a Face", White Bloodletting, and Rebel Yell.

Now that's entertainment.

Say goodnight, greasy.

"VSEA, AFL-CIO and the NEA have shot themselves in the foot and have only angered the Dems who control the Legislature."

Angered the Dems? You'd think the endorsements would make the Democrats do some soul searching. The president of the VSEA said they were tired of being taken for granted. Dems don't just take unions for granted, they take everyone for granted. If this angers the Dems then it just proves the unions' point.

Can Palin find Russia on a map?

Hey jw, why don't you just turn off your electricity in protest inasmuch as ENTERGY (Mississippi) runs the power in this state?

All the big liberal bluster and the fools have to crawl begging to Rednecks for their power!

Has anyone told Joe Biden yet that TV wasn't around in 1929 and neither was FDR president. DUH!

Anonymous..

"Can Palin find Russia on a map?"

Sure, just as soon as someone explains to her what a map is.

jw found SOMEONE to quote on how "bad" ENTERGY is - A WINE-SIPPING IMMIGRATION ATTORNEY!!! Gee, too bad those hurricanes created by President Bush had to ruin this idiots wine-tasting soiree. I'm sure the linemen who have probably been working 24/7 will be touched.

Yeah, she's the only one in Houston who's still without power, bubbakis.

The 4th largest city in the US has a population of four.

Sure thing, schmuck.

Of course, entergy and their many aliases are doin' such a bang up job that everyone else in Texas, LA and MS not only have their power back on, their lights barely flickered during that little rain storm everyone was makin' such a fuss over a of couple weeks back.

Always a pleasure.

Gee, bubbakis. Looks like Psycho Sarah's Alaska approval ratings are tankin' almost as fast and as far as shrub's.

I remember when shrub's were over 90 percent in the wake of 9/11.

How's that workin' out for him now?

According to Alaska Report:

September 24, 2008
Palin approval rating takes huge dive
THE HONEYMOON IS COMING TO AN END
In a new survey conducted September 20-22, Ivan Moore Research finds Sarah Palin's positive-negative rating in Alaska taking a real hit, for the first time since Palin was elected in November 2006. The survey was conducted with 500 likely voters in the State of Alaska, for a margin of error of 4.4%. The track of the last five Palin ratings is as follows, along with a comparison point from January 2008:

SURVEY
Rating

July 18-22, 2008 76-18
July 30-31, 2008 78-15
August 9-12, 2008 80-13
August 30-September 2, 2008 82-13
September 20-22, 2008 68-27

The mid-July poll was fielded just after the Trooper Wooten controversy broke. The positive rating of 76% was down from previous measures in the 80's. Despite negative press from the Troopergate issue, the subsequent three polls through the end of September showed Palin's positive rating steadily increasing, and her negative steadily dropping. But in the last three weeks, we've seen damage, with a swing of 14 points from her positive to her negative.
Breakdowns by party affiliation and political ideology for the last two surveys are illustrative of the internal dynamics:

I've got news for ya, nitwit. It's gonna take more than the clueless-cretin conservative vote to get elected.

A hell of a lot more, bubbakis.

The way things are goin', even if she manages to stay out of Alaska's Sarah Palin Prison for Women, she'll have a hard time getting reelected.

Even clueless Kathleen Parker from NRO is sayin' she owes it to McSame, the gop-slime party clueless-cretin conservatives, the scum vote and the USA to bow out gracefully "so she can spend more time with her family."

Evidently, gops are starting to worry about going from the majority to extinction when Psycho Sarah makes an ass out of herself like that airhead miss amerika did a couple of years back with her dimwitted dreck about "People in the Iraq don't have maps."

If psycho's lucky, she'll get a one-way ticket back to North Wasillastan where she can live out her days in well deserved exile and obscurity as a Trivial Pursuit question in the "What the fook were they thinkin' makin' shrub President back at the turn of the century!" category.

Always a pleasure.

How about Jim Douglas typical Karl Rove style attack on Gaye re: Jessica's law and sex offenders.

He attacks Gaye because she wants a thoughtful approach that will work rather than a knee jerk reaction that just costs more.

And frankly, both incidents in the last 4 years are the result of the Douglas Administration recommending release of a convicted sex offender.

Douglas is a huge hypocrite on this issue!

Gaye should run a counter ad pointing the finger of blame right at Douglas and Hofmann.

The audacity and hypocracy of Douglas explains his 43 percent unfavorable rating. It'll only get higher as more and more Vermonters start wiping the sleep from their eyes and start seeing the real Jim Douglas and the Rove kids.

Jim Douglas portrays himself as a nice, moderate guy - he is anything but!

Inf act, he has leaned more and more to the conservative wing of the GOP.

Just look at his appointees to commissions and boards -- they are almost all very very conservative!

Jim Douglas has been solely responsible for the strict partisan rifts in the statehouse.

Before 2003, democrats and republicans worked together to acomplish legislation -- now because of his my way or the highway attitude, it becomes problematic.

Jim Douglas is really doing this for party politics in hopes he can change the legislature to match his conservative ideals.

"..Douglas is a huge hypocrite on this issue!"

I'd hardly confine it to just this issue. Clearly, he hasn't.

Jessica's Law works fine in states that CARE about child molesters. A state that would put Bill Lippert in charge of ANYTHING obviously doesn't. Time to start using a little vigilante justice on the pervs.

"Gaye should run a counter ad pointing the finger of blame right at Douglas and Hofmann."

"The audacity and hypocracy of Douglas explains his 43 percent unfavorable rating."

Damned, Straight! She should knock his frickin' block off!

If she doesn't, doogie is gonna lie his ass off and the freeps folks and the rest of the sclm are gonna go into Judy Miller steno mode and simply take his trash at face value and reprint his press releases and talking points like they'd been verified and tell us how much money he's raised and how popular he is.

If Pollina stops gumming up the works, even a lousy candidate like Symington can knock his block off and put Vermont out of the misery caused by six years of the doogie/dubie debacle's incompetence.

The gop-slime in the US House reneged on their deal to deliver a majority of yes votes for Shrub's bailout plan and they're acting like Shrub was a Dem and they weren't in power for 12 years and never did a damned thing but deregulate and douse the fire with jet fuel.

So much for McCain's Mighty Mouse Paratrooper act last week.

We're in this fix because of gop cluelessness and gop corruption

In addition to being incompetent trash, Doogie is lyin' scum.

Like shrub and the gops, he's pretending he's the outsider running against the people in power and the administration responsible for the mess he's got us in.

It's not just, hell of a job, hoffie and Brooke Bennett, it's everything he touches. It turns to crap.

After the better part of eight years of shrub and incompetent-trash gop policies, the DOW is, once again, literally lower than the 10587 it was the day he took office on 1/20/01.

In real terms, by the time you adjust for inflation, he'd have to have the DOW over 14000 the day he leaves just to break even.

That's not gonna happen.

Ditto for Doogie, Vermont is in far worse shape than it was when he took Office six years ago, yet the sclm and the ignorant anonymous trash community act like he's ridin' to the rescue.

Doogie's the one Vermont needs to be rescued from.

"Jim Douglas is at fault for this and yet again he defends by attacking his opponents.

It's time for Douglas to go!"

Yeah, and it's long past time for the Freeps Folks and the rest of the sclm to stop telling us how much money he's raised, how popular he is and how effective his campaign attacks are against Symington and the Dems in the Legislature.

If he's lying his incompetent ass off, he's lying his incompetent ass off. It's long past time for the Freeps Folks and the rest of the sclm started calling him on his lies and to stop telling us what an effective campaign tactic swiftboating your opponent is.

Gee, ya mean you can win if ya cheat! Stop the fookin' presses!

Thanks for clearin' that up.

Clearly, that's the case. Shrub did it twice, McCain's tryin' to do it now and Doogie's tryin' to do it here. Again. That's why this schmuck has been in the White House for the better part of eight years and the DOW was down a record 777 points to where it's now 222 points lower than it was when shrub seized power on 1/20/01, but all we ever hear is how much money gops have raised and what a "disciplined, effective" campaigns they run.

The Nazis ran disciplined Blitzkriegs, too. How'd that turn out.

Now the Congressional gops went back on their word and the Country and the US Economy is in the tank and the Country must suffer because gop-slime feelings were hurt because Pelosi told the truth.

Gops are lyin' scum. It's about time the media stopped tellin' 'em what wonderful liars they are.

Yeah, and Himmler had wonderful table manners, too.

So fookin' what.

Whether in DC or Montpelier, gops are incompetent scum.

Keep howling cooper your saving the inbred mongrels the effort. The four legged ones that is, not you and your family.

jw, how come your little pal Welch voted against the bailout? And by the way, when the DOW was at it's peak, Nancy Pelosi and the dim-dums didn't control congress!

Pollina for Governor.

JW,

Take a note on how well Pelosi's little rant served her and the country yesterday. Toss in a couple 'lowlife, lunatic-fringe likes of you', add a few 'clueless cretins', an occasional 'go Cheney yourself' and a 'tell it to your inflatable woman' and she sounded a lot like you.

That may be compelling debate at the Daily Kos but not in mainstream America.

Ah, the ol' "rooster takin' credit for the dawn" routine. Gee, now who coulda seen that comin' from the lyin'-slime, lunatic-fringe likes of you, little fella.

In other words, you're saying it's OK for two out of three gops to vote against a gop President's proposal and punish the Country because Pelosi hurt their feelings with the facts.

"Take a note on how well Pelosi's little rant served her and the country yesterday. Toss in a couple 'lowlife, lunatic-fringe likes of you', add a few 'clueless cretins', an occasional 'go Cheney yourself' and a 'tell it to your inflatable woman' and she sounded a lot like you."

Ah, the ol' she hurt my feelings so I voted against my President's proposal song and dance.

Gee, who coulda seen that comin' from the ignorant anonymous-trash likes of you, little fella.

No sale, schmuck.

This is a gop-scum mess created by gop scum and gop scum policies.

If House gops are gonna vote 2-1 against their own President's proposal and continue to punish the Country for his and their collective incompetence because Pelosi hurt their feelings with the facts, they should not only be replaced immediately, they should be taken out and shot and their estates billed for the bullets and the firing squad's time.

This is a gop scum mess caused by an incompetent, illegitimate-trash gop scum President and a corrupt, clueless, incompetent gop scum Congress and their brain-dead, bushleague policies.

Those are simply the facts and a matter of record.

"That may be compelling debate at the Daily Kos but not in mainstream America."

Nice try, little nameless-nitwit fella. No sale.

If your ignorant anonymous ass represented "mainstream America", Bush would still be over 70 percent in the polls, clueless mcsame would be leading in the polls and not only would cluelessly-corrupt gops be favored to regain control of the Vermont Legislature and the Congress, they never would have lost it in the first place and Ruth Dwyer would be winding up her first decade as Governor.

Alas, she's not, they're not and you and your ignorant anonymous ass's take back vermutt trash don't.

You're dumb, you're scum and ya got bupkis, schmuck. Take it where the climate suits your sheet.

Moreover, you're a dimwitted dinosaur. Go find yourself a tar pit and fall in it.

Disappear.

The world of logic according to jw:

Bad: 2 out of 3 Republicans voted against a bill, thus hurting the country.

GOOD: Welch voted against the same bill, BUT in his case, it was O.K. because it was a bad bill!

DOH!
