On the waterfront

I'm a nerd who covers politics. My husband is a hip dude who covers music. Tonight on the Burlington Waterfront the nerds got together with the hipsters.

The occasion was a free show called DemRockracy, headlining Mike Gordon (formerly of Phish) and Bernie Sanders (currently of the U.S. Senate).

Because technology allows it, I offer you a very fuzzy photo taken on my cell phone, just to prove that cell phones should be cell phones and cameras should be cameras. Because you surely can't tell, that's Sanders, Gordon and Rep. Peter Welch somewhere in the blur.

Most of the people were there for the music, and thankfully, most of the stage time was devoted to music. But this is a political blog, so we're going to talk about that part here. You want talk about music, go visit the hip dude's BLOG.

During a break from the music, Gordon introduced Sanders, who declared this coming election the most important in the history of the U.S. (So much for Benjamin Harrison's election).

Sanders is all hepped on Barack Obama these days and in his rousing way he encouraged the crowd to be too. He also talked about people you should vote for if you happen to be from Maine or a few other places, but when it came to talk about Vermont elections, all he did was tell people to register to vote. He did not mention that there is a race for governor going on, or that one of his former aides (Anthony Pollina) is running in it.

Earlier this week I asked Sanders' staff if I could talk to him about Pollina and he declined. Pollina, who was along with Democrat Gaye Symington was working the crowd at DemRockracy (Republican Jim Douglas nowhere to be seen), said he hasn't specifically asked Sanders to endorse him. He seems to know that when Sanders doesn't feel like playing, he doesn't play.

Sanders did feel like playing with Welch, whom he welcomed on the stage. As Welch started speaking - I'm not making this up - a guy next to me in the crowd winced in pain at his lack of smoothness. Welch did then gain his stride and the guy was able to keep his wincing in check.

Really, the music was the highlight.

Comments:
Gee, so the jimi douglas experience is tone deaf about music, too. Go figure.

the photo of Bernie with Welch makes me wince. Bernie was so promising. What a shame to sell out.

Dorothy was probably tucking Jim in for the night, just as the music was gearing up. That, or plugging him in to recharge.

Time for a change -- Jim Douglas has got to go!

A recharge supervised by one, HJ Simpson on behalf of Entergy Chairman, CM Burns with regular press briefings by W"Rob" Smithers.

The Bernie situation should make Progressives and Democrats wince!
Bernie is not going to help Pollina.

There is no hope for Pollina.

He drove the milk company into the ground.

He's driven his campaign into the ground.

Stick a fork in him. He's done.

The Vermont League of Cities and Towns better get off its tush and start making some noise about Douglas's slash and burn on the budget! I'm sure Douglas has no problem punting the coming s&%t storm to cities and towns. He comes up smelling like roses while local pols get an earful about increased local taxes. Tap the friggin' rainy day funds already.

Anyone waiting for VLCT to take on Jim Douglas will have a long wait.

Go Douglas!

Go Douglas - Retire already!

Jim Douglas has to go!

Sometimes what a person doesn't do speaks louder than what they actually do. It was very telling that Pollina AND Symington were at this event and Sanders was unwilling to promote either one. You can completely understand Bernie not getting behind a Republican but to completely dis the other two is like using a flashing billboard for a CAUTION sign. The candidates should all just save their money. Clearly it's another two years with Douglas.

Gee, is this the first time Bernie has refrained from endorsing a Candidate for Governor, little nameless-nitwit fella, or has this been common practice for him?

That's what I thought.

On the other hand, does it normally take this long for self-proclaimed gop, Colin Powell to endorse his party's presumptive Presidential Nominee, little fella?

You'd think he would have endorsed a fellow military man like McCain in a heartbeat. Talk about your deafening silence.

What's up with that, little fella?

Always a pleasure.

Who cares what Bernie thinks? The guy is a socialist. Isn't it obvious where his loyalties will lie?

And btw Coopy, Bernie not endorsing a candidate has no connection to what Colin Powell does.

Bernie wins by bigger margins than 97% of his peers in the US Senate.

He doesn't take corporate money. He doesn't take money from lobbyists -- like most other candidates do.

Where do his loyalties lie? With the people of the state of Vermont ... that's why he wins big every time.

True that!

"Who cares what Bernie thinks? The guy is a socialist. Isn't it obvious where his loyalties will lie?"

Yeah, the people of Vermont and USA.

Let me try to explain somethin' to ya, little factually-challenged/nameless-nitwit fella.

Given the fact that he's the Junior Senator from the State of Vermont in the United States Senate and, assuming his health holds and he chooses to run for reelection for a second term in the US Senate, he'll be well into his 22nd year representing the people of Vermont in Washington DC, every American Citizen with a brain in good working order who knows what day it is and can differentiate up from down, so I can see why your ignorant anonymous ass would feel the need to ask upon uttering such an idiotic statement.

As for Powell's actions or inactions, they're every bit as relevant as Bernie's are. You raised the topic, little factually-challenged fella, I didn't.

Moreover, Powell is a self-identified Gop who's been mentioned routinely as a possible Gop Presidential candidate or VP choice for any Gop Candidate and/or pundit for over 15 years now and to the best of my recollection, has endorsed every Gop candidate for President with the possible exception of '04 and '08 to date.

Bernie, on the other hand, has always run as an Independent in all his bids for elective office when running statewide and I can't recall him ever endorsing a Gop a Prog or a Dem, but if you have evidence to the contrary, feel free to cough it up, little fella.

I merely raised Powell's name to give your ignorant anonymous ass another opportunity to demonstrate the fact that you don't understand the mechanics, the function or the role of government in this Country on the the federal, state or local level, the duties and functions of the various branches, the difference between elected and appointed officials and just generally don't know your ass from your elbow or what the fook you're talkin' about like the vast majority of the scum vote and your friends in the ignorant-trash community, little fella.

That's why your psychotic slop usually has little or nothing to do with anything.

Always a pleasure.

Little Jeffy Cooper really gave it to you that time!

*POW*

"Little Jeffy Cooper really gave it to you that time!" *POW*

Always happy to school the scum vote and help my less fortunate friends in the ignorant anonymous trash community, little yerry slimeball.

Always a pleasure.

Great points, Jeffy Cooper. You give it to 'em !!

Government was established to be a protector of our rights NOT a provider of priviledges. Jim Douglas is right to reduce government to "sustainable" (what a buzz word for libs!) levels.

"Government was established to be a protector of our rights NOT a provider of priviledges. Jim Douglas is right to reduce government to "sustainable" (what a buzz word for libs!) levels."

And what "priviledges" would those be, little fella. Clearly, you saw fit to drop a decent education from the list.

So, basically, what you're sayin' is that government is what doogie and the likes of your ignorant anonymous ass say it is, eh, little fella?

Nice try. No sale, schmuck.

Disappear.

State Government is bigger now than when Douglas began 6 years ago.

The government is a lot less sustainable now than it was under Howard Dean.

What your saying big butt coop is that everyone should feel free to stick out their hands for every taxpayer funded special interest request. Government was never intended to feed you every meal because you're too god damn lazy to get off the couch and work at a real job..."do da welfare check come on Tuesday or do da welfare check come on Thursday" Get a job and get off the internet "a" hole

In other words, you're dumb, you're scum and ya haven't got a case or a clue, so you're gonna spew some psychotic slop, try and change the subject and hope nobody notices.

I noticed. Tough break, little fella.

Well, I'm sure you'll be very happy workin' for Mr Tarrant, little fella.

Jim equals joblessness. Give him two more and he'll have ya homeless, to boot.

Always a pleasure.

Yeah, I've heard your ignorant anonymous ass's tale of woe before, little fella.

There's a journey of 12 steps ya might wanna take before ya come back here again, little fella.

Best of luck to ya, little fella.

Anonymous 9:17PM...

You are exactly right -- state gov't is bigger now than when Jim Douglas took office in 2003.

He has budgeted more people in state gov't than the legislature.

Jim Douglas is a two faced hypocrite giving out sound bites even if they aren't true - as long as they make him look good!

Like Bush, Douglas has created a larger government then he inherited. Kind of counter to the GOP "smaller government" platform.

And talk about fiscal responsibility -

AGAIN, Gov Jim Douglas receives a failing grade.

It was the Vt House and Speaker Symington that suggested that VT look at multi-year budgeting to be better prepared for the any future.

The House GOP under direction from Mike Smith and Jim Douglas voted it down.

Thank God Mike Smith is history after Friday! The little kid replacing him is going to be like a deer in the headlights.

Well, he can always go back to his paper route and his ignorant anonymous-trash life as little jerry none and spew psychotic slop he can neither substantiate or spell if he finds the pressers too tough for him.

Nameless-nitwit sewer water always seeks its own level eventually.

"Nameless-nitwit sewer water always seeks its own level eventually."

Would that be at 894 GALLISON HILL RD?

Nah, you flow down hill, little fella. You're at the bottom of the hill behind Woodbury Auto spewin' out of a pipe into the Winooski. You're never hard to find, little fella.

Always a pleasure.

Well, if your ignorant anonymous ass wasn't continually postin' my name, address, e-mail, and phone while periodically threatening to harass or harm my wife by name, you'd be doin' it to somebody else, schmuck, so, essentially, I'm here to protect society from the anonymous slime likes of you, little fella.

Always a pleasure.

Calm down Jerry Cooper. The voices in your head are not real and they are not your friends.

Terri, your first statement is correct --- you're a nerd. (you and Coop)
