Wanna run?

Just 12 shopping days left for the state's major political parties. Who are they shopping for? Candidates.

We've discussed the top of the ticket here several times. Some parties -- Republicans and Progressives -- will have empty slots up top of the ballots.

The hustle going on now, however, is to fill as much of the dance card for the House and Senate.

Assistant House Democratic Leader Floyd Nease, D-Johnson, predicts his party will field candidates in 130 of the 150 House contests. He called that impressive. "It's fun talking to people who are excited about serving."

Democrats had about a dozen legislators retire. (Here's a few: Chen of Mendon, Dostis of Waterbury, Fallar of Tinmouth, Fitzgerald of St. Albans, Gervais of Enosburg Falls, Monti of Barre, Peterson of Williston, and Symington of Jericho) Nease said Democrats had been recruited to run for all those seats. There are other places where Democrats believe a candidate could successfully challenge -- if only they could find a willing candidate. Nease expected last ditch appeals would go out soon for those spots.

The Vermont Republican Party issued its invitation today with a mass email entitled "Vermont Needs You." The message is, 'If you ever thought of running for public office, NOW is the time to contact us."

Republicans had fewer retirees/departures. They include: Bostic of St. Johnsbury, Lavoie of Swanton, Larrabee of Danville and in the Senate, Coppenrath of Caledonia. The party had four seats filled during the recently completed two-year term due to death and resignation, so those "incumbents" would be running for the first time. The previously elected seat-holders were Sunderland of Rutland, Shaw of Derby, Clark of St. Johnsbury and Hudson of Lyndon.

Party Chairman Rob Roper said the Republican slate is shaping up well, "but we are still looking for some people in Windham and Chittenden counties."

Over at the Progressive Party, Executive Director Morgan Daybell predicted his party would field at least a dozen House candidates. His goal is to have 14 because if all were elected, then there could be a Progressive legislator on every House committee. "That is the next benchmark for us," Daybell said.

Like his counterparts -- those in the Democratic and Republican parties charged with recruiting candidates, Daybell said he'll be trying over the next week and a half to persuade a few more candidates to take the plunge.

Some time after July 21, when petitions are due, we will get a sense of the power struggle that will play out this fall for control of the Legislature.

Comments:
I received the Republican email too. There is something to be said about quality vs. quantity.

I'm sure Rep. Nease is proud that he will have 130 candidates running. But can he honestly take pride in some of those candidates? I see that Rep. Hube is being challenged by some guy that has been "life-bumming" since moving to Vermont a few years ago, while Rep. Komline is being challenged by someone with obvious mental health issues. Nease should be ashamed.

The Progressives must be taking the cream of the crop.

Cream of the crop? Whatever crop it is they're smoking... I want some.

I’m the “some guy” who has been “Life Bumming,” and I find it amusing that the republicans yanked that comment off MySpace without any context, and then went on to criticize my experience. They even offered a backhand attack for my efforts to reach out to young adults and teens, something this state should certainly be doing more of. The complete comment is listed below, and can be read in it’s entirety at www.MySpace.com/LifeOfTomBuchanan.

“…The WWE gig ended in 2001, and I've been “life-bumming ever since.” That last comment was pulled from this site and ripped out of context in a July 2, 2008 email-blast by the Vermont republican party, so I’ll explain what it really means. Simply speaking, I’ve decided to forgo the rat race and share in the Vermont lifestyle, while enjoying the natural environment and the fine people that are attracted to this state. I have been teaching snowboarding, skydiving, and most recently fly fishing. It's a pretty cool way to earn a marginal living without squeezing into a cubicle. I remain single and live in the green mountains of Vermont. Hiking, camping, and whatever, occupies my free time. So my life is pretty complex, definitely fun, and focused on giving back to the community….”

So what’s with that WWF gig, you ask? I worked for World Wrestling Entertainment for 17 years, first as a freelance photographer, then as manager of all still-image production for every application throughout the world. It was a huge job, and I’m proud of my role helping the company grow from a small family enterprise to a global marketing powerhouse listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with an IPO valued at more than a billion dollars. That’s the kind of company and growth we could use more of here in Vermont. As for the rest of my experience, I think it speaks for itself. I have demonstrated experience bringing people together to address complex and polarizing issues, and am confident I can become an asset within the legislature.

I’m sorry the republicans find it necessary to trash good candidates who are anxious to serve. Our “Citizen Legislature” needs great people from all walks of life. We should be encouraging participation, not driving candidates away.

This is really a sad statement that we have to solicit candidates to run for office. The citizen legislature is obsolete and a major reason we can not make serious progess addressing the issues of the state.

With all due respect, I cringe when I think about our legislators doing this as a hobby or as way to supplement their marginal income or as the result of responding to a mass mailing to 'fill the ticket'. We need serious qualified professionals with the wherewithal to define an agenda and work in a bi-partisan way to implement it.

Tom Buchannn said: "I’m proud of my role helping the company grow from a small family enterprise to a global marketing powerhouse listed on the New York Stock Exchange, with an IPO valued at more than a billion dollars."

Tom, you should be proud. It sounds like you were part of an extremely successful business venture.

Do you mind if I ask a question? Did you make enough money to afford your "marginal lifestyle" without any assistance from your fellow citizens? By that, I mean have you saved enough to pay for your own health insurance, since I presume that "teaching snowboarding, skydiving, and most recently fly fishing" are occupations that don't feature employer-supplied health insurance. (Please correct me if I am in error.)

If you did, great. Congratulations on your success. If you didn't, can you explain how you obtain health insurance? And if you don't have health insurance, can you explain to us why the rest of Vermont's citizens should subsidize your "marginal lifestyle" by working full time to provide you with health care?

I don't begrudge anybody "life-bumming" if they're paying the full freight for their lifestyle choice. I'm less enthused about going to work every day and taking home less so someone who doesn't want to work as hard can have the same level of health care I enjoy.

"...since I presume that "teaching snowboarding, skydiving, and most recently fly fishing" are occupations that don't feature employer-supplied health insurance. (Please correct me if I am in error.)..."

A few resorts do offer health insurance, most do not. The availability of VHAP and Catamount is actually a boon to businesses because it helps subsidize their low wage workforce, and makes it possible to attract workers when they otherwise would need to pay a higher wage or offer benefits. If we were to cut those programs we would harm the tourism businesses that so much of our state economy relies upon.

Should we deny health insurance to all of our tourism workers, retail workers, and farmers, and just tell them to get better paying jobs instead? That’s not much of an option for our workforce. We need better paying jobs, and we need the jobs we have to pay better.

And I do have a small nest egg called a 401-K that I was hoping to never touch, but the economy is so awful this year that I will no doubt tap into it. As I contemplate that eventuality, I think of the tens of thousands of Vermonters who do not have my good fortune, and who will instead need to choose between milk and medicine, and gas to drive to their low wage jobs. That concern for my neighbors is a key motivator that brings me into the legislative race. We have a great state, but we also have deep fundamental economic problems that need to be addressed.

Tom: You sound like a smart guy to me. Don't let posts of the graduates of the Vermont Chapter of the Karl Rove School of Smear (i.e. Gibbs, Lunderville, Barnett, etc.) get to you. Hopefully, their day is coming soon. Be fun watching them (and their boss) trying to find employment in the private ssector.

"Vermont Chapter of Karl Rove School of Smear..."

Got hypocritical?

"Hopefully, their day is coming soon."

I hope so too; after all - when was the last time the Democrats were man/women/it enough to actually enter into a legislative debate. Hardly since Gaye Symington was Speaker of the House. Instead, she (and Shumlin) led the charge through Democratic pitter patter talking points (Gay marriage and Global Warming), failed twice in overriding the Governor's vetos, ignored the home heating crisis... Hey, did you see your recent Property Tax bill recently, I heard that Dover's just went up by... 25%. But not to worry. We can always work on whether it should be legal to crop dog's ears or not.

But I'm good feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Clap Clap, Gaye is shifting into gear... out the door.

(Isn't it ironic that the former Speaker uses the slogan 'Switiching Vermont into Gear' and Parades her sponsored race car everywhere? I wonder how much clean air that car omitts per gallon. Smart move to have that in all the local parades....)

Aw shucks. I just subscribed to the "Vermont Chapter of Karl Rove." Darn it. Is my day coming to. So much for the 1st Amendment.

“The availability of VHAP and Catamount is actually a boon to businesses because it helps subsidize their low wage workforce, and makes it possible to attract workers when they otherwise would need to pay a higher wage or offer benefits,” said tom Buchanan.
Hmm, tom must know something the business community must not know! The Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce and other business associations around the state opposed Catamount. If it is such a “boon” for them why would they oppose such a thing? Now I’m “bumming”!

Tom,

The problem with your argument is that you seem oblivious to the fact that teaching snowboarding is not a career. Its a fun winter job for college kids and exchange students. That's why they call them ski bums. I agree, its a lot of fun, but its not what responsible Vermonters do when they grow up. You have made a lifestyle choice - stop bitching about it and blaming the people who have to foot the bill.

So Tom,

Independentvter asks a compelling question - don't think you answered it, and since you are running for office I think the public is entitled to know the answer...do you have health insurance and, if so, who is paying for it?

Tom Buchanan said "... The availability of VHAP and Catamount is actually a boon to businesses because it helps subsidize their low wage workforce, and makes it possible to attract workers when they otherwise would need to pay a higher wage or offer benefits."

I don't disagree with that statement, Tom. Low-skill, low-wage workers need help. When state government levies tax and regulatory costs on businesses, those costs are borne by consumers and workers, who the companies can't afford to pay more because they have to compete in both the national and global marketplace.

What I asked was, are you paying for your own health insurance or do you have any? If you're on VHAP or Catamount, at least you're paying some of the costs. If you have none, you're foisting all of the cost of your health care off on me and other Vermonters who have private insurance.

"Should we deny health insurance to all of our tourism workers, retail workers, and farmers, and just tell them to get better paying jobs instead?"

No, we should reduce the cost of doing business so their employers can afford to chip in for their health insurance. And allow insurance companies more flexibility to offer policies that people can afford. Community rating and mandatory coverages for numerous conditions drive up the cost of everybody's insurance. An 18-year-old non-smoking male doesn't need the same insurance coverage that a smoking, 35-year-old woman does.

I agree with the poster who says you sound like a smart guy. In fact, you sound like a guy who could easily get a job that provided health insurance, but for lifestyle reasons has chosen not to. Please disabuse me of this notion if I'm not correct.

"We have a great state, but we also have deep fundamental economic problems that need to be addressed."

I agree. Vermont's economy is built largely on tourism, agriculture, and manufacturing. We've got a growing software/IT sector and the captive insurance industry to help diversify it. But it's all propped up by IBM. They are the heart of Chittenden County's economic engine, and that engine drives Vermont's economy.

And we blew it back in the 1990's. The future of IBM is Fishkill, NY, not Essex Jct. VT. As IBM continues its slow exodus from Vermont, replacing those high-paying engineering and manufacturing jobs with, pardon me, fly-fishing instructors is not going to result in the same economic benefit and standard of living we enjoy now.

Top it off with workforce that's aging out and not being replaced due to essentially stagnant population growth, and the future is not a pretty place.

So please answer my questions: Do you have health insurance, and if so, are you getting it subsidized on the taxpayer dime? And what's your plan to address those "fundamental economic problems?"

Hey Tom,

I checked out your myspace site to see how you were misquoted. Here's more of your post: "I have been teaching snowboarding, skydiving, and most recently fly fishing. It's a pretty cool way to earn a marginal living without squeezing into a cubicle. I remain single and live in the green mountains of Vermont. Hiking, camping, and whatever, occupies my free time. So my life is pretty complex, definitely fun, and focused on giving back to the community." Hmmm - you find "life bumming" pretty complex - how do you think you're going to handle the complexities of the legislature - a bit more challenging than boarding down a mountain dude...

So, will the House and Senate dispense with conference committees in favor of a "State House Smackdown"?

Lets face the fact that we need a full time legislature. This hobby situation is attracting the bottom of the barrel. It is not bringing the cream of the crop to Montpelier.

Buchanan - your my space page seems to have undergone a my space make-over in the last few days.

What was originally life-bumming in the context of a day-in-the-life of a ski-bum trustafarian is now in the context of some kind of statesman?

Who are you kidding?

The party of Jim Douglas and George Bush can do nothing better than attack anyone who opposes their ideas.

Rob Roper, Jason Gibbs, Neale Lunderville, Mike Smith, Dennise Casey --- that's theier whole mission in life -- to attack anyone without an R after their name in a way that keeps Jim Douglas' hands off.

You got that right!

Jim Douglas is the biggest hypocrite in VT politics!

Gov Douglas is the most partisan political person in the statehouse.

I hope the Republicans or Progressives have someone to run against Scott Orr. That man just give me the willies.

Hey... he has run against 2 republicans in the past - AND WON THE ELECTION!

The run a Progressive against him. Anyone. This isn't about politics.

Don't forget that Cringe woman who works for the governor. She's a graduate of the Rove school as well. She's just a lower rung player in the boy's club though, but she floats around them all the time in hopes of being taken seriously.

I am a card-carrying member of the "rat race" that was disparaged above, and I can tell you that I hold my head up high knowing that by working hard and paying taxes I am providing not just for myself and my family, but for other Vermonters as well. Taxes on my income help provide health insurance to low-income Vermonters, help protect our environment, and contribute to the many social programs our state government offers.

If you really want to "contribute to the community", get a real job, pay taxes, and help us help those that cannot help themselves. Through my taxes I do more to help a low-income Vermonter in a week than many of these preachy no-job do-gooders do in a year.

Stop trashing those of us that actually have the wisdom to realize that government is funded by people that wake up and go to work each day, even though many of us would rather snowboard or hike.

Hmph.

p.s. pro wrestling is fixed.

I know everything about Tom Buchanan based on 3 sentences he wrote on a web site and his occupation.

I'm such an amazingly bright person that I know exactly what his positions are on all things and I know that he is a horrible, horrible man of sparce moral fiber. And he eats children. Mostly for breakfast.

Terrible guy. I know.

Yo Tom,

Where are you? I know you're out there - did the party tell you to clam up -

What about the healthcare question? Do you have coverage? Are you paying for it - or is the tax-paying rat race anonymous poster above supporting your "life-bumming" choice? If so you should thank him instead of disparaging him.

Careful on the slopes dude - Even if you've got VHAP or Catamount coverage. Both are subsidized by the rat racers of this state (who are supporting the life bummers).

Remember to hug a rat racer today - may not be glamorous but it is a grownup choice.

Signed,

Mrs. Rat Race

Yo Tom,

You're a canibal, aren't you? I know it. I heard that you are a car thief and that you beat your grandmother. Did the party tell you to clam up about that? Why won't you answer these questions?

Remember, my job is better than your job. This makes me feel very superior to you.

Signed,
Mr Rat Race

Ha I love the hug line!

Rat Racers unite!

Did anyone tell Tom that should he (fat chance) win the election that he'll have to swap his fly-fishing vest for a coat and tie? Oh and the committee rooms aren't much larger than a cubicle.

Steve Adams still hasn't figured that out.

Heidi "Cringe" I mean Tringe is a waste of a position in state government - and she works directly for Gov Douglas.

Her job should have been the first one cut by Douglas!

Heck, Duncan Kilmartin never figured out that legislators are required to wear PANTS in the statehouse.

Yeah, you're finally gonna have to take down that 1948 calendar, auntie amerika. Hey, it had to happen some time.

"With all due respect, I cringe when I think about our legislators doing this as a hobby or as way to supplement their marginal income or as the result of responding to a mass mailing to 'fill the ticket'.

Well, if they made it their full-time gig, then by definition, they wouldn't be the "citizen legislators" you were pinin' away for in the previous paragraph, now would they?

Make up your mind, crazy lady.
You mixing up your meds again, auntie a?

"We need serious qualified professionals with the wherewithal to define an agenda and work in a bi-partisan way to implement it."

In other words, your ignorant anonymous ass will be voting the straight Dem ticket in November.

You can take your gop-slop talking points along with that 1948 calendar to the dump and recycle it next time you go to the dump.

Hell, you could even leap straight into the 21st Century and learn how to spell progress while you're at it, crazy lady.

So, is your ignorant anonymous ass still failing to prove I'm Chuck Lacy today or are you back to failing to prove I'm Doug Hoffer again, little factually-challenged fella?

Always a pleasure.

Nice try, nitwit. No sale.

In other words, herr rove, you're still dumb, you're still scum and your indignorant ass has still got bupkis.

Really? There's hardly any debate in the Legislature, eh? And how did Shumlin and Symington do that, indy? Did they prevent doogie from drillin' on the State House lawn?

Just who forced doogie to veto legislation supported by the majority of Vermonters, little factually-challenged fella?

That's what I thought.

"Hey, did you see your recent Property Tax bill recently, I heard that Dover's just went up by... 25%. But not to worry. We can always work on whether it should be legal to crop dog's ears or not."

Ah, so tales of animal cruelty warms the cockles of your heart, little lard-butted fella. That's some energy plan.

Hey, everything but the US Dollar and the stock market has gone up since the jimi douglas experience hit the stage, little fella. Just what has doogie done to address the fact that the cost of gas and home heating oil has doubled and tripled during his reign of error, karl?

What does jimi plan to do to help folks keep warm this Winter, indy?

When his wife's gone, is he gonna invite everyone over to stand next to his girlfriend's fire?

"But I'm good feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. Clap Clap, Gaye is shifting into gear... out the door."

It's a problem when the major parties are just shopping for bodies to represent the party line. Problems occur when you have idiots treating politics as a game rather than the opportunity to do something good. I would rather vote for my dog, than what the parties have drafted in Barre.

Well, I'm sure your dog appreciates your support, little fella.

Only if your ignorant anonymous ass's idea of leadership on the part of a Democratic Speaker of the House is to rubber-stamp every piece of delusional dreck doogie the dimmer doles out to her.

If Vermont wanted the jimi douglas experience to have a gop-scum rubber-stamp, little fella, Walter Freed or some other gop-slime would still be Speaker of the House.

Clearly, they're not and we don't.

Like the criminally-incompetent, brain-dead bushleaguers and the late, unlamented, cluelessly-corrupt gop-scum Congressional Majority that put us in this fix in the first place, the doogie/dubie debacle has had six years to show that they don't know or care what the hell they're doing or give a damn about the State of Vermont.

Doogie's done his damnedest to do for for Vermont what his boy Shrub had done for the Country. Fortunately, Vermont's had a Dem Legislature to at least slow him down a little bit when he wasn't vetoing what the Legislature sent them.

Clearly, doogie's had six years to demonstrate that he can't get it done. He doesn't deserve another encore.

BTW, I don’t believe Fiona, Graham or McCain has suggested altering anyone’s anatomy. You liberals are such any accepting group.

I hope Coop and friends haven't lost too much in the market because BHO is looking at $12/gal gas and no interest in drilling for oil(yet- he is for change and we see him change daily). He also wants to raise taxes, offer "free" health care, require everyone to speak the language of the country they visit so Americans won't be embarrassed. If he is so embarrassed with the US, he should move back to his dad's homeland- Kenya.

Thanks for the kind words, Coopy. You are a true gentleman.

I see you have started early today. You must be opening the Ben and Jerry's store today.

NEK,

The emerging question about Obama is what is longer: the list of things that embarrass him about America or the number of flip/flops he has made since securing the nomination.

BO was for withdrawing from Iraq next year...now he will refine his plan as he understands it better.

BO was going to filabuster FISA but when it was time to walk the talk, he rolled over and voted for it.

BO said it is more patriotic to NOT wear a flag lapel pin but now he does.

After the Supreme Court overturned the District of Columbia's gun ban, BO(a clear the handgun-control proponent) said he favors both an individual's right to own a gun as well as government's right to regulate ownership. Huh?

BO became the first major-party candidate to reject public financing for the general election after earlier promises to accept it.

BO, who historically followed the party line and was against faith-based initiatives, now not only embraces but promised to expand Bush's program to give more anti-poverty grants to religious groups, a split with Democratic POV.

BO objected to the Supreme Court's decision to outlaw the death penalty for child rapists, even though he has historically been anti-capital punishment.

BO (as well as Pelosi, Reid and the rest of the Dems) were going to lower gas prices. Now he will going to let prices rise. No implementable plan has been brought forward by him.

By the time we are done, BO will make John Kerry look like a man of unwaivering convictions.

JW,

Can't you answer 6:00AM's question? Will you now be referring to Jesse Jackson as 'democrat-scum'? His words were more vicious and hurtful than anything the other side has said to date.

Your opinions are quite simple:
(a) Yes, I will
(b) No, I will not

Enquiring minds want to know.

Facts Coopy,facts....the flip/flops are clear identifiable facts. They are too good to be made up.

Nice try with the insult-ladened smokescreen but I thought you were a man who wanted the facts.

I do have to admit, however, your guy does truly offer the promise of change and hope. You can be sure his opinion will CHANGE for whatever is politically expedient and, if elected, you will need to HOPE one of his many flips won't hurt you.

Obama is nothing more than just another self-serving Chicago politician.

JW, Can't you answer 6:00AM's question? Will you now be referring to Jesse Jackson as 'democrat-scum'? His words were more vicious and hurtful than anything the other side has said to date."

Really? So, aside from the fact that Congressman Jackson - his own son - already beat me to it and
Jackson, unlike Fiorina or Phil and Wendy Graham, is neither a current nor past holder of elective office as a member of the Democratic Party or, unlike Fiorina and the Grahams, has played an active part in of a Democratic Administration's efforts to shape the very gop-scum economic policies that have the US Economy in the most precarious condition since the gop-scum who gave us the Stock Market Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression and Jackson, unlike Fiorina and the Grahams, is not affiliated with or part of the Obama Campaign has already publicly apologized for his reprehensible remarks on numerous occasions "were more vicious and hurtful than anything the other side has said to date.", eh, little factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest/nameless-nitwit fella?

Your ignorant anonymous ass "thinks" remarks made by Jesse Jackson that "Obama should have his nuts cut off for talking down to black people" are "more vicious and hurtful than anything the other side has said to date.", eh?

"BTW, I don’t believe Fiona, Graham or McCain has suggested altering anyone’s anatomy."

No, on behalf of the McCain Campaign, they just suggest on continuing and expanding the very economic policies that have allegedly turned the American People into "a bunch of whiners" in "a mental recession" who are "imagining high gas and heating oil prices along with losing their homes, their jobs and their health care under the Bush Administration, the jimi douglas experience and their ignorant, ill-informed, anonymous, gop-scum supporters, little fella.

"You liberals are such any accepting group."

Feel free to point out just where and when I claimed to be accepting of ignorant, ill-informed, anonymous, brain-dead, bushleague, gop-scum bigots with bupkis, little fella, while you're coalition of the clueless-cretin ass continues to fail to substantiate the rest of your psychotic slop.

Always a pleasure.
Dismissed.

"Facts Coopy,facts....the flip/flops are clear identifiable facts. They are too good to be made up."

Nah, as with my faith in your inability to come up with a clue or make your case on any topic, my faith in your ability to spew psychotic slop you somehow can never seem to substantiate remains as unshakable as ever and that's a fact, crazy lady.

Your ignorant anonymous ass never fails to fail to come up with the goods, cap'n clueless.

Always a pleasure.
Dismissed.

Anybody heard anything from Tom Buchanan? I'm still waiting to hear whether his "life-bumming" is being undertaken on the taxpayers' dime, or whether he pays for his own health insurance?

Buchanan certainly disappeared quickly. Hmmmm.

Floyd must be doing his job.

Floyd, why can't you let Tom come out and play with us?

Who wants to come out and play with Floyd?
