The purchase not made

This is a story of a purchase not made during Vermont's sales-tax holiday this weekend.

There was a couple that decided this winter to spruce up their living room and kitchen, which were feeling the dinginess of an aging paint job. It seemed like a big job, but the couple told themselves that when all this hard work was done, they would reward themselves with a new dining room hutch that would help make the whole place look even spiffier.

As they looked more closely at the work at hand, they decided that before painting they really needed to fix the peeling joint tape on a couple of the walls. And when I say they, I mean one member of the couple decided this while the other offered his sincerest moral support.

Despite the fact that this couple has no experience at such work and no indication of any skill at it, they decided to muddy the joints themselves. And when I say they, I mean one member of the couple decided this while the other offered his sincerest moral support.

A great quantity of weekends passed that involved buying spackling knives and buckets of goop before the new joint tape and artlessly applying them to the wall and ceiling. All the while, the reward of a new hutch dangled.

The couple finally sent about painting the walls and ceilings. Many more weekends went by and the couple grew resentful of the fact that the living room and kitchen were in perpetual disarray. But there was a new hutch to look forward to.

Meanwhile, the federal government promised to send money that would pay for the new hutch they had in mind.

Then the state government promised a tax-free holiday that would make hutch even cheaper. Never mind that when considering the cost of the hutch, the couple never really thought about how much the tax would be.

The couple finally finished painting the walls and restoring some order to the disarray. Though one member of the couple can't help but see every flaw, especially on the muddying job she did, and both members of the couple aren't sure that the colors they used were quite what they intended, the rooms really did look better.

By this time, though, when the couple thought about buying the hutch, they couldn't help but think about how much the economy was tanking all around them. The price of oil, the price of cheese, the disappearing jobs. Somehow buying a hutch didn't seem like such a good idea.

They started thinking about how they'd done just fine without the hutch all these years. They noticed how other people's hutches, which were probably once the source of great pride, were now jammed full of stuff. And even though the federal government and the state government were offering to help, the couple figured they would save even more money by not buying the hutch at all.

Plus, the kitchen looks pretty darn spiffy without the hutch, what with the new paint job.

That's the story of why one couple was not at the store this weekend spending their federal money and taking advantage of the state sales-tax holiday.

- Terri Hallenbeck

Comments:
A hutch does not a household make. Okay, if you have a starsky, then maybe you need a hutch. But outside of that, hutches suck.

If you miss out on the sales tax holiday, there's a two-word secret code that will allow you to take advantage of the holiday all year long. Write down these two words: New Hampshire.

The stores were full Saturday, something unusual for a July weekend. I think a lot of people would disagree with you that the program was a loser.

Once again, at least Douglas has done something. That's alot more than Shumlin and Symington can say.

This tax free holiday does absolutely nothing to help jumpstart the economy.

It just moves around when people are purchasing items.

And if it does increase sales - much of it goes to out of state corporations.

The only thing this does is promote Jim Douglas for tax-cutting - which by the way, the legislature had to figure out the details and how to pay for it.

“It will save them money, but the state will lose the money,” Kavet said. “They’re shifting it around for political gain. This is like handing out candy.” Tom Kavet, an Economist for the Legislature.
This is a typical comment from the GOP haters and shows how absurd their thinking is. How does Vermont lose with the tax holiday- stores sell more, keeps people from going to NH to buy gas, merchandise and dine out while there.
I think the only losers are Symington, Shumlin and Kavet who all said it was a gimic- that is because their only interest is to TAKE your tax money. How does Vermont lose revenue they may never have received?

What this story really implies is that Vermont has its share of smart, industrious women with lazy husbands.

Hey nek (or is that Jason, Neale, or maybe Dennise)...

If all these sales went to VT based businesses and not out of state corporations that your boss - jim douglas - supports, and it was truly new sales not rescheduled sales, then maybe it would benefit VT.

If you check, you will find that most economists to label this as a gimmick, used for political gain.

And Jim Douglas has become quite good at doing NOT what's right but what's good for his re-election.

Anon said..."If all these sales went to VT based businesses and not out of state corporations..."

I can't believe the absurdity of this statement. The sales go to whoever offers the product at the best price. I don't believe the people lining up at Small Dog Electronics to buy an Apple laptop could have bought it from a VT producer of Apples. People lining up to buy TV's at Best Buy were probably struggling to find a VT-manufactured big screen TV.

The sales made were made in VT and the profits made in VT stores something that makes those evil out of state corporations need to keep the doors open on their stores in VT and to keep your neighbors employed.

VT produced products are limited and generally overpriced to the marketplace. People buy what they can afford. If you want to people to buy VT products make them and sell them affordably.

The program is a success the only problem most people have is it was pushed by a Republican.

This sales tax holiday reminds me of Bush telling Americans to "go shopping" after 911. Moronic indeed.

I bought our dreamy governor a secret gift, but I'll tell you all what it is before I give it to him. I got him (and myself) huge vats of self-tanning cream so we don't look like albinos before heading down to the Vineyard for a strategy session with two "n's" and hard workin'. Opie Lunderville might join us too. I have a ton of freckles, but nothing compared to whitey Jim.

The Dems can think of 101 excuses why a tax holiday doesn't work. Will Symington et al have a public statement explaining to all those businesses that were busy selling merchandise that it was a waste of their time and it doesn't help anyone when you sell something. Hello.. Dems- should we close all businesses because it is a waste of time?

Apparently Anon 10:49AM thinks we should be putting a fence around he state to keep the out of state corporations from selling in VT. P

It nevers ceases to amaze me how strong the 'keep out of VT' sentiment is.

That's "keep out of VT"-- after they move here!

I just drove through Williston. The parking lot of the SuperStore and Vermont Furniture Gallery is overflowing and traffic is backed up a mile in every direction at Taft's Corners.

I guess you guys are right. The Tax holiday isn't doing anything to spur business....right.

If you listen closely, you can hear those profits being sucked right out of the state by those evil out of state corporations as we speak.

Go Douglas. Your plan is a winner!

Whoa... traffic is backed up at Taft's Corner on a weekend??? Just land on the planet anon 2:29?

Some people will never admit they, or their party, was wrong!
I'm waiting for Tom Kavet (the Legislative economist)to admit that he failed EC101.

Encouraging people to spend money when they do not have money does not make sense. We can barely afford gas, or health care, so tell me how is it buying crap going to help me just because the legislature and Doesless created a tax holiday for a few days.

Save money by not spending money....

Sure thing, nekkie boy. The 50 percent surcharge about to be added to the cost of maintaining the roads, transporting the kids to school and funding all other responsibilities of the State and
Local Governments are gonna just miraculously appear out thin air and pick up the tab for the damage caused by years of gop-scum short-sighted stupidity.

"How does Vermont lose with the tax holiday- stores sell more, keeps people from going to NH to buy gas, merchandise and dine out while there."

First of all, let's see what receipts for this past weekend look like when they become available, nekkie boy. Fair enough?

Secondly, your ignorant anonymous ass really can't fathom how gop-scum government policies lead to large deficits despite recent history.

Let's review. Once again, the last time gop-scum controlled all three branches of the Federal Government was the 1920s when they gave us Teapot Dome, Warren Harding losing the White House china in a poker game before going on to lose his life and a decade of gop-scum piracy on Wall Street and in the Banks that culminated with the Stock Market Crash of '29 and the Great Depression.

Then, of course, there was the Reagan Recession, Debt, Deficit and Iran-Contra cluelessness followed by the first Bush Deficit and Bush Recession.

Unfortunately, no sooner than Clinton got the Economy moving by paying down the first Bush Debt and the first Bush Deficit, despite being saddled by an obstructionist, criminally-clueless and cluelessly criminal gop-scum Congress for the last six of his eight years in office a 5-4 gop-scum majority on the Supreme Court decided to install the idiot prince on the throne where he promptly went on vacation, fell asleep at the switch and allowed 9/11, lied us into an unjustified and unjustifiable War in Iraq and squandered the largest Federal Surplus in US History while running up more debt than all his White House predecessors combined and leaving us with 150 bucks/barrel oil and the largest bank failures since the last gop-scum fleecing of the S and L Crisis by the Bush Family and under the Reagan/Bush Administration.

Of course, when he leaves office in January, the jimi douglas experience will have left a Vermont far worse than the one Howard Dean left him with.

Of course, to a large degree, doogie is a victim of gop-scum policies on the national level of the bush administration. Then again, he supports that gop-scum administration and their policies.

So much for that get outta jail free card.

"I think the only losers are Symington, Shumlin and Kavet who all said it was a gimic- that is because their only interest is to TAKE your tax money. How does Vermont lose revenue they may never have received?"

Once again, nekkie boy, the only thing you've managed to substantiate is the fact that your ignorant, ill-informed ass doesn't think at all.

Alas, unlike your smart and your sanity, those facts were never in dispute.

Always a pleasure.

O Darn, I am sure Douglas didn't even think about someone spending money they didn't have! Instead of a tax holiday, Jim should have enacted blue laws and closed down every store in the sate, then we could be sure those who haven't wouldn't spend their money.

NEK,

You are missing the point, the Douglas economic stimulus program wasn't a good idea UNTIL the D's and P's woke up and realized something had to be done. Their strategy is clear and unwaivering. They approved the plan because they know it had to be done and then immediately turned tail and started to talk against it as if they objected from the very beginning.

Coop is the Master of Revisionism. As he will tell you, the US is a mess because of the Repubs being in power for so long. Strangely we are the nation everyone wants to immigrate to because it is so much better than the rest of the world.

Yup, the Repubs have made a real mess here.

The 12 million illegal aliens were all forced into the US by some strange power- possibly jobs, free health care, social security,(even without paying into it)and possibly amnesty. Unfortunately, 12 million GOP haters opted to stay here instead of moving elsewhere which I do not understand because everywhere is better than the US.
In the words of BHO, "The US is the best place on earth." followed by "With your help, we can change it."

Coop needs to experience life for awhile someplace outside the walls of his Montpelier compound and without his trustfund.

A little seat time in the real world is always a helpful thing.

It's time to put that left-wing NYU education to work Coopy.

Saying that the "tax holiday" was a success because the WalMart parking lot was full is like saying that the economy is going great because GE stock went up today.

Vermont should give the "tax holiday" a real test and continue it for the rest of the year.
Of course we might have to cut back on some education funding, retire a few more state employees, close Inefficiency Vermont and eliminate and/or reduce some expensive pet projects Howard the Dean initiated.
Who knows, maybe the Littleton and Lebanon traffic would stay in VT.

Why stop there? Let's eliminate the state income tax. Let's eliminate car registration fees, hunting fees, fishing fees ... let's close highway departments and tech centers. Let's close courthouses and police departments. Let's eliminate the legislature and the Department of Ag. You want the roads plowed? Do it yourself or stay home. You want police protection? Tough. Buy an automatic weapon and put landmines around your house.

This is American, damn it! We don't need no stinkin gubbermint.

Treasury Acts to Shore Up Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac

By STEPHEN LABATON
WASHINGTON — Alarmed by the sharply eroding confidence in the nation’s two largest mortgage finance companies, the Bush administration on Sunday asked Congress to approve a sweeping rescue package that would give officials the power to inject billions of federal dollars into the beleaguered companies through investments and loans.

In a separate announcement, the Federal Reserve said it would make one of its short-term lending programs available to the two companies, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. The Fed said that it had made its decision “to promote the availability of home mortgage credit during a period of stress in financial markets.”

An official said that the Fed’s decision to permit the companies to borrow from its so-called discount window was approved at the request of the Treasury but that it was temporary and would probably end once Congress approved Treasury’s plan. Some officials briefed on the plan said Congress could be asked to extend the total line of credit to the institutions to $300 billion.

The actions, which taken together could provide an overwhelming surge of capital to the companies, were the second time in four months that the housing crisis had prompted the government to scramble over a weekend to rescue a major financial institution. Last March, the Treasury Department engineered the sale of Bear Stearns to prevent it from going into bankruptcy and cause a shock to the financial system."

Yeah, while you're proving that I'm suffering from a mental recession and that this is just a "revisionist" product of my imagination, feel free to prove how I "imagined" to get the NYT and every other news organization to report this story.

Heck, ya may as well have your ignorant anonymous ass tell them they're imagining shrub's repealing the ban on off-shore oil drilling enacted by his father and make a factually-challenged, "revisionist" day of it, little fella.

"Strangely we are the nation everyone wants to immigrate to because it is so much better than the rest of the world."

Really? So, apart from the fact that these immigrants would be emigrating here, it's your clueless-cretin contention that no one wants to emigrate to any other Country in the World but the USA "because it is so much better than the rest of the world.", eh?

Good luck makin' that case, little factually-challenged fella.

Privatize the courts. Why should I pay taxes that go to Judges salaries? I've never used the courts. I shouldn't have to pay.

I hate the gubbermint.

We need to abolish Meals on Wheels. Why do I need to pay for meals for old people? If they want to eat, they should get up and get jobs. I shouldn't have to pay.

I hate the gubbermint.

We need to privatize the border crossings. I never go outside of the United States. Why should my tax dollars go to pay border guards? The people who travel across the border should pay. Not me.

We could close all the prisons and let the criminals loose- tremendous savings.
You obviously miss the point and the sales tax "holiday" was successful, unless you want to keep your head in the sand.
It proves the point that the state does not have to tax something to generate revenue. This "holiday" generated more advertising, more hours for employees, more gas and rooms and meals revenue all creating tax receipts. Imagine what business could generate with no sales tax. Just look at NH- they were the losers this past weekend.

"We could close all the prisons and let the criminals loose- tremendous savings.

Really? So this credit crunch crisis clearly caused by the consistently-corrosive effect of unchecked clueless-cretin conservative economic policies is just another one of crackers graham's "Nation of whiners in the midst of a "mental recession" letting their imaginations get away from them with "imaginary" stories of long lines of bank customers trying to get their money out that weren't on TV or in the newspaper like the following:

"updated 4:18 p.m. ET, Mon., July. 14, 2008

NEW YORK - IndyMac Bank, the second-largest financial institution to close in U.S. history, reopened Monday after being taken over by federal regulators.

Hundreds of worried customers lined up to pull as much money as they could from the failed financial institution.

However, federal regulators said it could be years before the affairs of the bank were fully resolved.

Charles Tengeri, a retired school teacher, was the first customer to emerge from the Pasadena headquarters of the bank.

He held a check for $171,000 — an amount that he said represented most of his savings.

"I didn't think this could happen," he said. "But I'm glad to get anything out."

So, if reports like that really do start occurring, would it OK with your ignorant anonymous ass to be a bit concerned, nekkie boy?

"It proves the point that the state does not have to tax something to generate revenue."

Sure, just like it proved that a July weekend without snow proves that a January weekend will be without snow.

Good thing, little fella, because the salt, sand and fuel for those plow trucks is gonna be a hell of a lot more expensive than it was last year when it was a hell of a lot more expensive than the year before.

"This "holiday" generated more advertising, more hours for employees, more gas and rooms and meals revenue all creating tax receipts. Imagine what business could generate with no sales tax. Just look at NH- they were the losers this past weekend."

It did, eh?

So, what you're saying is that Vermont has no retail sales, rooms and meals receipts, travel and lodging revenues unless we have a sales tax "holiday" weekend which causes NH to have no retail sales, rooms and meals receipts or travel and lodging revenues at all.

Good luck makin' that case, nekkie boy. Your ignorant, ill-informed anonymous ass is gonna need it.
