It's Jack the Villain

Just back from a week's vacation. Very little thinking went on during this time, but I did gain some insight on the whole gas-price issue that I thought I'd share with you.

This insight came during the evening entertainment at our extended-family gathering. Every year when we get together, the young nieces and nephews stage a skit, or series of skits, featuring Jack the Villain, a nefarious and shady character with a paper pig named Piggy for a sidekick who is forever escaping the clutches of a team of spies.

Jack the Villain happens to be played by my husband, who is otherwise not nefarious or shady but does have a fondness for bacon.

Ever a topical theater company, one of the skits this year was titled, "The Mystery of the Gas Prices." In it, Jack travels to the United Arab Emirates to take charge of the world oil market. His first action upon taking control: to raise the prices.

It's as good an explanation as any I've heard. And no, the spies were not able to detain him.

- Terri Hallenbeck

Comments:
Careful. Sam H. may report this as the actual reason for the nation's high gas prices.

It is too bad the Villain had to go to the UAE to set oil/gas prices. The US has more untapped reserves than all of the Middle East. We could put thousands of people to work and turn this economy around by election time. Some people just can't resist supporting the Arab nations along with Chavez by sending them $millions for their oil.
Probably the Villain would have been a villain had he tried to drill for oil in this country!

How true.

Drill here. Drill now. Pay less.

I doubt it. Lacy donated to Pollina's campaign.

No, Lacy has contributed to Symington's campaign. Its the only way he knows how to get her out of the house.

SAM HEMINGWAY

When will we see the retraction for your post "Anthony's Ag-ony"

NOFA Director Enid Wonnacott said, "For Sam to say that we’re attacking Anthony is simply wrong. I don’t have a beef with Anthony,”

Sam was WRONG.

Where is the retraction?

Man up Sam. Print the retraction.

Not to change the cry for Sam H to post a retraction or the unending search for Coopy's true identity(like anyone should care), if you haven’t realized it yet the single greatest strategic weapon in the world today is the control over the production of oil.

Like it or not, the world's infrastructure is built around the availability of reasonably priced oil. The OPEC nations (most not our friends) realize this. We, however, do our best to stay in denial about it. We accept the environmentalist arguments about its risks and effect on our world’s ecosystem but fail to accept that we put our security and our future at risk by remaining so dependent on foreign sources of oil.

It is entirely clear that we cannot change our infrastructure overnight and any solution will take 20+ years to implement. For that time we are at serious risk as a nation. If the risk were traditional military threats (guns, bombs, terrorist attacks) we would respond. With this risk we seem to be paralyzed because of political infighting and the unbending self-interests of special interest groups.

The only answer that makes sense is to begin to produce more oil here in areas that have traditionally been off-limits while incenting the private sector to commercialize alternative energy technologies with tax credits and other economic initiatives.

Until we stop sounding like victims (those mean old Arabs did it to us) and take control of our destiny oil prices will continue to rise, our dollar will continue to devalue and our economy will struggle. Pelosi and Reid both promised to solve the ‘gas price’ problem when they took control of Congress. To date, they have done nothing like all the Congresses and Administrations over the last 30 years. Wake up…throw the bums out. Vote in people that see this as the central issue facing the country economically and militarily and have the backbone to address it in the face of the pressure they will face.

Captain America

You shun alternatives because, "any solution will take 20+ years to implement"

And yet you propose drilling in ANWAR and other areas ... which would take 15 years to produce oil.

The real Captain America thinks things through better than that.

The pipe line from the North slope is not running anywhere near capacity and it would not take 15 years to get oil from ANWAR. That is the argument used by the protectionists.
Our energy policy should include oil, nuclear AND alternatives such as solar, wind, conservation, bio and others still on the drawing board but oil has to be included. The Dems policy is only conservation and alternatives, even the ones that haven't been discovered/invented yet.
As Captain America said, we will not survive without using our own oil reserves.

You don't even have your basic facts right.

BTW ... John McCain has the WORST attendance record in the US Senate – even worse than the guy who missed half of the session because he was in the hospital.

According to the American Petroleum Institute, there are only about 16 million barrels to be extracted from off our coasts. That's better than what the Beverly Hillbillies shot up out of the ground, but in the big picture, 'tain't much. At current usage rates (which are likely to rise), that would supply about one year of gas for us guzzlers.

But wait, there's more: The institute also estimates that this supply wouldn't come online for at least a decade.

In other words, don't count on the coasts to improve your household budget just yet.

OK, then, what about ANWR? Surely we can disturb a few caribou to save America from expensive gasoline.

Maybe not. According to a study released by the U.S. Department of Energy in May, the ANWR fields wouldn't come online -- deja vu -- for another decade, or peak until the 2020s.

So, once more, with feeling: The United States cannot drill its way to cheap oil or lower gasoline prices. Had we had the foresight to keep our eye on the alternative energy ball from 1980 forward, we'd be in a whole different position today.

But we didn't, and we're not.

So for those who argue (often strenuously) that there's no time like the present to start that drilling, an argument: There's also no time like the present -- despite our failure so far -- to get serious about conservation and developing alternative sources of energy.

"And yet you propose drilling in ANWAR and other areas ... which would take 15 years to produce oil."

Check some facts for yourself someplace other than the Huffington Post or VPIRG. The real time to make a new oil field productive can be as little as 1 year if there is available infrastructure to support the field. The typical experience is 6 to 7 years when infrastructure needs to be put in from scratch.

So far Congress has ignored and fought over a executable energy program for more than 30 years. If their success in solving the Social Security issue is any example of how effective they can be on energy, why do you think now they will do anything now more than just the bare minimum? And do you believe that oil will not be part on any credible long term plan put forth?

Given the strategic importance of the problem, we need to address the problem on several fronts. Drill here and now is one. The expansion of a sensible nuclear program is another and incentives to the private sector to develop affordable alternatives is the 3rd.

If you have a better plan that can be implemented please present it. Coopy has been asked to do that for some time now but hasn't been given the talking points yet. Do you have something to share with the group other than criticism?

Captain America

Oil companies already lease tens of millions of acres of federal property, both on land and offshore, yet leave it unused for oil production.

Before we allow drilling in conservation areas, Congress should push oil companies to fully utilize the national resources already available to them. Increased supply — as those who support drilling in the refuge are quick to point out — should lower prices and would certainly cut our dependence on Middle Eastern oil.

According to House Natural Resources Committee Chairman Nick J. Rahall (D-West Virginia), the unused land could produce 4.8 million barrels of oil and 44.7 billion cubic feet of natural gas every day. That's as big as it sounds: It would nearly double U.S. oil production and boost natural gas production by 75 percent, cutting oil imports by more than a third.

"There's also no time like the present -- despite our failure so far -- to get serious about conservation"

Good idea. Here are some places to start:

1. Outlaw snowmobiles, ATV's, motorboats and off-road motorcycles
2. Eliminate all non-farm or verifiable commercial use of tractors, pick-up trucks or cars with more than 6 cylinders.
3. Discontinue all forms of motor sports...auto and motorcycle racing, power boating, jet skis, etc.
4. Limit the number of cars a family can own to 1
5. Make Al Gore live up to his talk as Mr. Environment by moving into a smaller home with a smaller carbon footprint and stop flying private jets.
6. No more chainsaws, weed eaters or other power tools.
7. Ration gas to limit consumption now.

What else are you willing to give up in the name of conservation?

Getting rid of chainsaws will actually increase oil production, because the price of a cord of wood would go through the roof and more people would burn oil for home heating.

I'll be the first person to support conservation. But your suggestions are a little radical.

BTW, there is no reason to expand drilling in the US. It's time to get serious about alternatives.

Will increase oil consumption, not production.

And your alternative energy plan is....???
Talking points are great but they don't heat the house and they don't turn on lights or take me to work. Are we waiting until someone has an idea so we can plug into it the next day??
You sound like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid and you are all in complete denial about our energy future.
This is why our Congress' approval rating just went into single digits.

Right on NEK....

There are no alternatives that these Anon's will serve up. They have none...exactly like the Pelosi/Reid contingent. Point fingers, assign blame, critize legitmate executable proposals....that's their game. Sounds a lot like the strategy for Social Security reform, huh.

By the way, were't they going to lower gas prices when they came into power?

Captain America

Captain America and NEK's comments sponsored by Exxon Mobil. Proud sponsor of the "Gas Tax Holiday is a Fine Idea" GOP Campaign (even though we'll inflate our prices to counter the lost profit and no one will ever be able to prove it).

No plan to offer?

Substitute Jim Douglas for every "Norm Coleman" reference in this paragraph from a story about Jesse Ventura (a Republican mind you) considering a run for MN Senate:

Ventura said of Coleman, "the guy has not had a job in the private sector his entire adult life. He's been collecting government checks since the day he got out of law school and went to work for the attorney general's office. So when Norm Coleman tells people in the private sector he feels their pain, how? He's never been in it. I would like to send him out and get a real job in the private sector."

Hey Anon, I just checked with my friends at Exxon Mobil. They want to apologize to you for being in the oil business and making a profit today so they can have the cash to be in business tomorrow.

They asked me to to find out from you if you had a plan for energy independence that you could share with them. They also said that if you liked they would be glad not to sell you any more gas.

How about diverting the government subsidies that the oil companies get to wind and solar R&D?

That's concrete. It's simple. It's easy. Nobody gets hurt ... why not?

So, your ignorant anonymous ass accuses - and, of course, fails to prove that the author gets their facts from Huffington Post and VPIRG before turning around and claiming some coalition of the clueless-cretin crapolla to the contrary while providing your usual bupkis for evidence in support of your latest load of delusional dreck.

I'll say this much for ya, crazy lady. You're nothin' if not consistent. Actually, your ignorant anonymous ass is both nothin' and consistently clueless.

"So far Congress has ignored and fought over a executable energy program for more than 30 years."

Really? Let's review. In the past 30 years, gop-scum has held the White House for seventeen of them. In fact, Reagan had a gop-slime Senate for 6 of his 8 years in office and gop-scum controlled both houses of Congress from 1/95-1/07. That 12-year period encompassed the last 6 of Clinton's eight years and the first 6 of shrub's incompetent, illegitimate trash reign of error when gops controlled all 3 branches of the Federal Government when they promptly used the opportunity to fall asleep at the switch, ignore PDBs entitled Bin Laden determined to attack inside the US refusing to cut short their vacations and doing nothing to prevent the 9/11 attacks and lying us into a disastrous, unjustified and unjustifiable War in Iraq while squandering the largest Budget Surplus in US History and running up the biggest deficit in US History and accumulating more Federal Debt than all his predecessors combined.

Moreover, in the better part of the past 28 years, the Dems controlled all 3 branches of Government for exactly two years.

So, once again, given those facts, just what's prevented the gops from doing anything about our energy independence and the environment?

That's what I thought.

"..Given the strategic importance of the problem, we need to address the problem on several fronts. Drill here and now is one. The expansion of a sensible nuclear program is another and incentives to the private sector to develop affordable alternatives is the 3rd."

And what's stopped the gops from doing that, little fella?

That's what I thought.

Gee, I hate to keep confusin' your ignorant anonymous ass with the facts, crazy lady, but Nuclear Power and the Oil Companies have been receiving corporate welfare all along?

We know how it's workin' out for Exxon/Mobil and Entergy. What have the American People gotten for their billions?

That's what I thought.

"If you have a better plan that can be implemented please present it. Coopy has been asked to do that for some time now but hasn't been given the talking points yet. Do you have something to share with the group other than criticism?"

Really? In other words, you're still dumb, you're still scum and your ignorant anonymous ass has still got bupkis.

Nice try, little nameless-nitwit filly.

You're gonna have to get yourself some new factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest, utterly-psychotic, gop-slop nonsense talking points to mindlessly-spew, auntie amerika.

Always a pleasure.

So much nekwit nonsense, so little time.

In other words, you're still dumb, you're still scum and your ignorant, ill-informed ass has still got bupkis.

Thanks for clearin' that up, nekkie boy.

Again, I hate to keep confusin' your coalition of the clueless ass with the facts, nekwit, but neither Terri, Sam, Symington or Shumlin are responsible for OPEC. It was formed in 1960 in response to an Ike initiative.

In addition to being longtime friends and business associates of the Bush and Cheney clans, they're just doin' what they've always done. Lookin' out for themselves. At least somebody learned something and profited from their association with shrub and the dickster.

If only the same could be said of the USA.

"...We could put thousands of people to work and turn this economy around by election time."

We could, eh? Based on what?

Ya know, nekkie boy, if you're gonna continue to spew utterly-psychotic gop-slop with no basis in fact and lie your ignorant, ill-informed ass off 24/7, you're gonna have to stop being so clueless and clumsy about it and develop a bit of finesse to go along with your fiscal fiction.

"Some people just can't resist supporting the Arab nations along with Chavez by sending them $millions for their oil."

Yeah, bush and cheney, to name just two.

"Probably the Villain would have been a villain had he tried to drill for oil in this country!"

Again, nekkie boy, if you're gonna continue to insist on remaining caseless and clueless and not havin' the foggiest notion of what you're fookin' talkin' about, could ya at least try to get your gop-slop nonsense in the same hemisphere.

Always a pleasure.

"And your alternative energy plan is....???"

Getting rid of dick cheney and his failed energy policy we're operating under now for openers. Clearly, that one ain't workin'.

So much for oilmen in the WH who'll make sure we'll never pay as much as 35 bucks/barrel for oil again.

How's that one workin' out for ya?

"Talking points are great but they don't heat the house and they don't turn on lights or take me to work."

Not if your ignorant, ill-informed ass can't do better than this psychotic slop they ain't.

No, it's because Congress has still got too many gop slimeballs who care more about coverin' for Bush and their own clueless, corrupt asses than they do about the American People.

How many Dems are living in the White House?

That's what I thought.

You're dumb, you're scum and ya got bupkis, nekkie boy.

Get serious. You know damned well why.

Because bush and cheney haven't figured out how to meter the Sun, it doesn't put money in their pockets and it makes too much sense.

You're coming at this from the wrong angle, pal.
You've got to dispense with notion that bush/cheney in particular and gop-scum in general give a fook about this Country and this World beyond what they can profit from it. They don't. If nothing else and there's nothing else, they've made that abundantly clear.

Coop's ONLY solution to the energy crisis is to get rid of Bush & Cheney. Too bad we couldn't use all of your hot air to heat our houses while we wait endlessly for your break-through alternate energy plan.

Coop also believes that the Dems have no responsibility for the lack of an energy plan because they didn't control all three branches of government for the last 30 years. Clearly he is a victim of the political winds and has been absolved of all responsibility to make a difference.

Get a clue Coop that is the strength of our system. Two parties, checks and balances, you know...democracy. The challenge is you have to work professionally, as adults, dealing with people that have differing opinion, not just insult them.

The Dems have had more than their share of time to do something. Al Gore had 8 years to influence the government as VP and didn't. Now that there is money in it for him, he seems to be more motivated. Has Al moved Fat Cat status?

It's not Bush or Cheney or Reagan. It's the inability of all of our legislators to make tough choices even though it may jeopardize their ability to be re-elected.

This just in, nekwit. Ya can't get rid of the cancer without cutting out the tumor. The Bush/Cheney/Gop-Scum Energy Policy is the cancerous tumor responsible for getting us in this mess in the first place. Losing them and their clueless-cretin fan base is step one of the way out of this fix they've put us in.

I hate to keep confusin' your ignorant ass with the facts, nekkie boy, but gop-scum ruled all 3 branches of the Federal Government for the first six years of this punk's presidency. We're where we are because of the Bush/Cheney/Gop-scum Energy Plan.

Oil was 30 bucks/barrel when this incompetent illegitimate-trash seized power and they were blaming rolling blackouts in California on Erin Brockovich when it was Kenny Boy Lay and Enron scum laughing about fleecing little old ladies with brain-dead bushleaguer blessings.

If your ignorant, ill-informed ass likes this situation, vote gop-scum in November.

If you give a damn about this Country, don't.

Nah, I'm just a stickler for the facts, little factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest/nameless-nitwit fella and they ain't doin' your ignorant, anonymous ass any favors.

The gops controlled all 3 branches of the Federal Government for the six-year period from 1/01-1/07. It was a gop-scum 5-4 majority that installed shrub on the throne with an unprecedented decision that -unlike every other decision in SCOTUS History - can't be cited as precedent in any future case before the Court.

We are where we are today because there were no checks and balances on the Bush/Cheney/Gop-Scum Energy, Defense, Foreign and Economic Policies.

"Get a clue Coop that is the strength of our system. Two parties, checks and balances, you know...democracy...."

I hate to keep confusin' your ignorant anonymous ass with the facts, little fella, but if gop-scum controls all 3 branches of the federal government as they did, then by definition, there are no checks and balances.

In other words, your ignorant anonymous ass wants me to pretend that gop scum didn't control all 3 branches of the federal government and the Dems were in position to apply checks and balances on the administration when the facts say otherwise and that you're a serious person advocating a legitimate point of view supported by fact and evidence and worthy of careful consideration and debate when you're just some factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest/nameless-nitwit with bupkis and none of those things are true.

Not a chance, chump.

You haven't had a case or a clue since ya got here and your next thought will be your first and I'm not gonna pretend you're anything more.

You're the same ignorant, anonymous trash with bupkis punk who was dissin' Hoffer and anyone else who tried that tack with ya, little fella and ya don't like it when somebody smacks ya back.

Gee, that's a shame. Get your ignorant anonymous ass a case and a clue or get used to it.

Really? Again, I hate to keep confusin' your ignorant anonymous ass with the facts, little fella, but the same gop-scum Congress who was there for the first six years or Bush's illegitimate-trash reign of error was there for the last six of Clinton/Gore along with a Supreme Court featurin' 7-9 gop-appointed Justices providing those checks and balances you were just psychotically-spewing about while failing to grasp, little factually-challenged fella, so, once again, you're still dumb, you're still scum, your ignorant anonymous ass has still got bupkis and the facts ain't doin' ya any favors because you simply don't know what the fook you're talking about with respect to any topic rooted in fact and evidence and requiring even a rudimentary knowledge of our system of government.

WOW....once again your reading skills are in question.

Once again, for the slower members of the class, the energy issue has loomed for over 30 years. You have ignored over 20 years in your rant...eight of which Clinton and Gore(you know the guy with perhaps the largest personal carbon footprint in TN) were running. Yet you acknowledge no accountability of the libs.

Great job. Fair and balnaced. There is a job at the Daily Kos waiting for you.

Fact is Republicans controlled congress for much of that period and are responsible for the greatest rip-off of the American people in favor of oil interests in the history of this country. Look at reality for a change.

The Repubs took control of the Congress in the 90's with Gingrinch's Contract with America. Until then it was heavily Democratic. What did they do when they had control?

What did Carter accomplish as President when the crisis started?

What did Clinton/Gore do when they were in power? I don't remember any landmark legislation that they proposed and the Congress rejected.

Actually, inform us please by defining the substantial legislative initiatives the Dems have tried to enact that has been blocked by the Repubs.

Here is your chance to bring reality to the board. Educate us please or go stand in line with Coop. He has no facts to offer on this topic either.

Fact is nobody has done anything to address it and the Dems only solution now is to let prices rise and gamble on unproven technologies.

Gee, I hate to keep confusin' your ignorant anonymous ass with the facts, little fella, but Reagan had a gop-scum Senate for the first six of his eight years in office, so, given the fact that he had a gop-scum Supreme Court when he was in the White House, the Dems only controlled the House, Reagan, at great expense, pulled the Solar Panels Carter had installed off the White House while killing all Federal tax credits and funding for alternative energy R and D and with his gop-scum rubber-stamp Senate, blocked all Dem efforts to reinstate it, so he could fund his psychotic star wars, illegally fund the Contras with neo-nazi nitwit Ollie North's Arms for Hostages scam with Iran, so, once again, unlike the first six years of the bush administration when gop-scum controlled all three branches of the Federal Government and contrary to your latest factually-challenged/clueless-cretin claim, Congress wasn't heavily Democratic and the only thing you've managed to prove is that you don't have your facts straight, don't know what the fook you're talking about and are lying your ignorant anonymous ass off.
