Political notes from Free Press staff writers Terri Hallenbeck, Sam Hemingway and Nancy Remsen

Political-phile that you are, if you heard the news that Skip Vallee, avid Vermont Republican, was coming home from his ambassadorship in Slovakia, you might begin to wonder if Vallee has any interest in running for political office once he gets back on terra-america.

There are, after all, some vacancies in the Republican slate. Say, for Congress. Maybe for other offices, depending on the plans of certain other people.

You would be wrong.

After 2 1/2 years living in the Little White House on the hill overlooking Bratislava, Vallee is coming home next week, but he'll be returning to the business world not the political arena, he told me today. "I will not be running for anything," he said.

That doesn't mean he won't be paying attention to politics. "I'll try to be helpful to my friend, Governor Douglas," he said.

Comments:
Skippie learned his lesson when he lost so badly in his run for a State Senate seat.

Nobody has ever spent so much money on a Vermont state senate campaign ... and nobody has ever lost so badly.

He's going to need to pay more attention to his gas stations now that Jolly's is eating his lunch.

Who cares what Skippie does!

He is just a schill and money launderer for Pres Bush and Gov Douglas.

Why do you think he was appointed an ambassador? Because he bought the position by raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for Pres Bush!

"Why do you think he was appointed an ambassador?"

Be real. Why do you think anyone is appointed to a position like this whether a Dem or a Rep administration? Every president of every party has done this. Why do you make it sound like this is GW-specific. Be fair, GW has done enough unique things on his own. Don't ding him for playing an ages old game.

Everybody does it, so it's okay?

Did you protest when Clinton named ultra-rich Democratic supporters as Ambassadors, or are you only complaining now?

Only complaining now because we can pretend it is a practice that originated with GW

Clinton, and the people he nominated, were competent.

Shrub, and the people he nominated, not so much.

Always a pleasure.

Not the point. The point is that each Pres. appoints rich contributors to ambassadorships. But some people here seem to think GWB invented the practice.

I doubt if jw could even name anyone Clinton nominated!

"I doubt if jw could even name anyone Clinton nominated!"

For the record JW will name a few just as soon as he finishes his posting to Bill Maher.
