The Doyle report

Just spoke with Sen. Bill Doyle, the 81-year-old Republican from Washington County who had an accident yesterday while test-driving a car at Twin City Subaru in Montpelier. In case you missed it the story is HERE.

"I've demonstrated Phil Scott is a better driver than I am," Doyle quipped. Scott, of course, is a fellow Washington County Republican senator who races cars.

Aside from maintaining his sense of humor, Doyle is otherwise maintaining pretty well. "I feel as strong as a bull moose," he said. He will put off any decision on buying a new car until after an upcoming trip to the Council of State Legislators meeting in Quebec City.

Doyle had back surgery in the month between the end of the session and the July 11 veto session. He attended the veto session in a wheelchair, spent time at a rehab facility, but is back home and getting around with a walker. Somewhere along the way, he lost his driver's license, which is why he was doing his test-driving in the parking lot of the dealership.

If you thought for a moment that all this has diverted his focus away from state business, you thought wrong. Doyle chatted about a host of topics, including border security and passports, which he will be addressing in Quebec City.

Comments:
Doyle and Flannagan should car-pool.

Sorry to hear Sen. Doyle was testing out a foreign automobile instead of an American model. Would have thought Doyle would be a little more sensitive to that issue. Guess not.

Actually, Subarus sold in America are produced in the Subaru plant in Lafayette, Indiana.

More to the point, EVERY auto maker on the planet depends on a global supply chain. Steel comes from China, Canada and the USA. (US Steel is heavily dependent on hand outs from the federal government, driving up the cost of many consumer items.)

Component parts are made in every conceiveable nation from Taiwan and Pakistan to Lithuania, Mexico and even the USA.

You want a Chevy, Ford or Dodge that is 100% American made? You won't find one. Many Ford and GM cars and trucks are assembled outside the US.

People who say "buy American" aren't aware of the complexity of the global ecconomy -- and are seldom aware of their own position within it.

Good luck.

The Truth Hurts

DMV should yank Senator Doyle's license and put him on the bus where he belongs. Only Paris Hilton has a worse driving record.

Does Doyle have a prior driving record? Or are you just trying to be funny?

Fords and Chevys suck.

Somebody should tell Bill Doyle that Subaru's Impreza is turbo-charged...that's why all the kids love them. Perhaps the turbo kicked in and throttled him to 35MPH quickly.

Doyle needs to retire. Last time I was in Montpelier at a hearing the guy was completely dozing off. Everybody could see that the guy was asleep and didn't know what was going on.

He does fall asleep in meetings. It's kind of sad. Overall, a nice guy though.

Some very nasty people on blogs. Good reason to discount most of what is said here and in other comments.

Doyle has served this state with distinction, and shouldn't be trashed by people who think it's a sport to anonymously attack people in this fashion.

The next time you get in some mishap, think back to your bold comments against Doyle published here.

I'm not worried about Doyle. He can defend himself -- but did you read what they wrote about Ford???

That was hurtfull.

"The next time you get in some mishap, think back to your bold comments against Doyle published here"

What the hell does that mean?

It means treat others as you would like to be treated.

Thank you Jesus for your words of wisdom.

I don't know that anyone here claims to be Jesus.

But it's good to see that some people make an effort to be decent and respectful of others.

It's funny that one would be disparaged for advocating decency.

Doyle is not Vermonts problem - the Democratic Party is completely out of touch with voters!

"Some very nasty people on blogs."

Why, because we report that a guy is asleep in the legislature? No one ever said the guy hasn't served Vermont with distinction. What they said is that the guy currently is sleeping. Which is true. Grow up.

I like my grandafther and my grandmother. They have served with distinction. But I wouldn't want them in the legislature.
