Perley charged

Rep. Peter Perley, a Republican from Enosburg Falls, was charged last week with drunken driving and resisting arrest.

"I certainly made a mistake — a very serious one,” Perley said Monday. “I am just so sorry that it happened. I’m quite frankly embarrassed.”

Perley, a first-term lawmaker who serves on the House Education Committee, wouldn’t discuss details of what happened, but according to the news reports, Franklin County Sheriff’s deputies were alerted about an intoxicated man by a clerk at the Mobil station on Vermont 105 about 10:30 p.m. March 15. Perley allegedly tried to pull away as a deputy sought to handcuff him.

Perley is a sponsor of “Nick’s Law” legislation that seeks tougher penalties for drunk-driving offenders following the 2007 death of Nick Fournier of Swanton. Asked whether the charge affects his standing on that, Perley said Monday he continues to support the legislation. Supporters of Nick’s Law plan their annual rally at the Statehouse on Tuesday.

NIce One! The laws a tough enough. Educate and prevent this type of offense. If the laws get any tougher, they will take house , and put you in jail for life. Thats about about all thats left to do besides capital punishment.
The cops, probation and parole can drink and drive. Who is going after them?

Stop selling alcohol.

This is outrageous, here's an accused DUI driver who sponsored tougher legislation for DUI offenders, love it!

This man/Represenative is no better than the women stopped in Williston with 7 kids.He co-sponsored stronger DUI law and this is how he sets example.Jail for this criminal and remove him from office and if he does not go to jail and only has loss of licence and still acts as rep then he needs to pay out of his pocket any and all mode of transportation and we the people/State not pay out one DIME.You are a Poor Example of Leadership!

How ironic here is a person that supports a a tough law on DUI'S and gets caught himself for DUI and resisting arrest. What is the world comming to, a bunch of do as I say and not as I do'ers. It goes to show that most politicians and elected officials think and try to prove that they are above the law, and that the public will tolerate it. bring back the tar and feathers and public humiliation agin.

I heard from a good friend in Franklin County that people are not surprised - they say that it was only a matter of time!

Tar and feathers equates to torture and vigilante justice, and people died from having this done to them (hot tar causes severe burns). Also, it was mostly done to black men, most of whom had committed no crime. I hope that never happens to anyone again.

Kind of like putting tax cheats in charge of the U.S. Treasury Department.

The press should ask the Republican party leaders - Jim Douglas and Brian Dubie - to comment on whether Peter Perley should resign.

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that he used his political meal per diem to pay for the drinks, and was charging the travel to his mileage expense? If so, does that make the taxpayers of this state liable?

Not really a big deal when one considers that this misdemeanor offense is overshadowed by those that commit felonies and get to remain in office. That's how we roll here in the land of milk, honey, and maple syrup.

Alcoholism is a cunning and baffling phenomenon. Many times we dont even know we have crossed the line. Instead of humor or humiliation, his support of tougher laws about DUI could be a subconscious cry for help. I say he needs to take a really good look inside. Maybe his friends and his family already know something he doesnt. Alcoholism isnta disease of denial, its a disease of ignorance. How can we deny we have something when we dont even know we have it?

A true Republican.

Hipocrit and breaking the law. Sounds like a Republican. Salmon now Perley, Whose next? I am surprized Perley wasn't Tazered. His office saved him?

Remember...when you throw those stones

Maybe Perley should switch to Democratic Party. Dems embrace this kind of do-whatever-feels-good type of behavior. If he goes far enough, he could even move to Arkansas and then run for president.

The difference is that Perley owned up to it, admitted he was wrong, apologized and accepted responsibility for his own action.
