The poll

What do the numbers mean?

WCAX-TV released its poll for the governor's race last night and the Symington campaign found something to cheer about -- but so did the Douglas campaign.

The poll showed that if the election were held last week (on whatever dates the questions were asked) 48 percent of those surveyed would vote for Republican Gov. Jim Douglas, 33 percent would vote for Democratic House Speaker Gaye Symington, 7 percent would cast ballots for independent Anthony Pollina and 12 percent had yet to make up their minds.

The story about the poll doesn't say if these were registered voters or voters likely to vote.

Douglas has a 15 percentage point lead, but doesn't have the 51 percent he will need to win.

He can be happy about the lead. She can be happy he doesn't have a majority.

Then there are the numbers that indicate what people think of the candidates.

Douglas received a favorable rating from 48 percent of those polled, presumably the same 48 percent who would vote for him. The bad news for him is that his unfavorable rating was 43 percent.

Symington has to like that.

She received a favorable rating from 37 percent of those polled. Why didn't they all say they'd vote for her? Her unfavorable rating was only 15 percent -- not bad.

The question mark for Symington is the 48 percent of those polled who have no opinion about her. Scary to be such an unknown to voters six weeks before an election, isn't it? Her campaign argues this as an opportunity.

Pollina received a favorable rating from 41 percent, but despite those good feelings, many didn't indicate they would support him in the election. Ouch. He also had unfavorable ratings from 33 percent. Ouch 2. About 26 percent had no opinion about him.

So what do you read in these tea leaves?

Comments:
Surprised Doeless's unfavorable rating isn't higher. He is a walking poster child for the failed policies of George Bush. I hope one of these debate moderators will force him to explain why he continued to defend GW up until it became unfashionable to do so. Doesless is an opportunist who is devoid of real ideas. Good to see Vermonters are starting to come around to that realization (albeit too late).

Vermont is in the pits. It has become basically a ward of the country, a total welfare state. A few good companies remain to prop it up, like IBM, but with "friends" like Bernie Sanders and his union thugs, probably isn't long for this state. One of the few high marks for the state is it has the cheapest electricity at least in New England, thanks to ENTERGY, yet another corporation doomed for demise by the far left loons. If it wasn't for the disaster looming if Douglas is defeated, it would be almost amusing (in a sick way) to watch Pollina or Symington try to run the state, complete with veto-proof majorities (again). I can just see Vermont become a state version of Lehman or AIG - perhaps being put into receivership by the Feds! Of course our Three Stooges in Washington would just continue to be just that-stooges for the far left!

Bubba takes delight in highlighting how GOP-backed corporations are now on the public dole, yet he fails to make the connection between GOP policy and his own pocketbook. He's an example of the uneducated electorate that continues to vote against its own self interests.

This has got to be devastating to Jim. I think the press is way underplaying how bad this is for him. The guy campaigns relentlessly, uses all of the trappings of office (at our expense) to burnish his image, he's spent gobs of money, has been on radio and tv already for weeks...and 43% don't like him? He can't crack 50%??

Of course, Symington has to get her act together because this opening won't last forever. But it does seem at this moment that Vermonters are ready to send Jim off into the sunset.

So, anyone want to guess how fast Jim puts his attacks ads on the air?

I am shocked that Gaye is doing as poorly as she is. JWCOOP10 has been endorsing her since day 1.

Wake up Vermont. Don't you get it? Coop says Gaye is the answer. Line up and man up or be prepared to be called a gop-slime, shrub-lovin', ignorant, clueless cretin who should go where the climate suits his sheet and cheney himself.

Inasmuch as I have worked for several "GOP-backed" private enterprises for many years, have spent 3 years in the "GOP-backed" Army, have several IRA's dependent upon "GOP-backed" business climate, have never been on the public dole, and believe in a strong defense to prevent our country from being harmed by our enemies, of course I lean toward the Republican side and therefore much in the minority in Vermont. Not always, but certainly now.

I would prefer to be on the side of the "GOP-backed" business than the "Dems-backed" entitlement programs.
Some people prefer to just sit back with their hand out and beg from the Bernies'- others prefer work!
BTW- Fannie Mae was run by the Clinton cronies, Jamie Gorelic for one, who walked away with a $10 million package. They were "in charge" when the rules changed and it went down hill from there.

Even Robert Reich blames the Clinton Administration and the Democrats for this financial mess.

"Dems-backed entitlement programs."

Like bailing out giant corporations that make terrible business decisions?

And letting the CEO's retire with golden parachutes?

Like Bush just did with AIG??

That kind of entitlement program??

Bush had 8 years to change the rules. If it was so bad, he was in charge of fixing it.

Bush failed to lead.

6 weeks before the election, 48% of voters have no idea who you are and what you stand for, and your third-party opponent is taking you to school on endorsements. How the heck do you raise the money to put ads up in October to counter that? Or do you just throw up your hands, say "well, so much for that", and give up?

It means that 48 percent of those polled don't give a damn about the State of Vermont and that Anthony Pollina remains hellbent on sentencing the State of Vermont to two more years of doogie/dubie debacle incompetence.

Moreover, it means that support for the jimi douglas experience is not as strong as the BFP and the rest of the MSM has continually told Vermonters it is and that doogie's continuing "image is everything" PR blitz ain't workin'.

Unfortunately, it appears to indicate that 12 percent of those polled don't know there's an election in November.

So, having no other business before us, the Vermont Yankee Leak of the Week Club is hereby called to order.

BFP polled 400 voters and they polled prior to the last 2 endorsements- they should save the ink and just call 400 more voters- if it helps, they can save time by getting a list from VSEA or NEA. Their polling is suspect anyway.

Because the country is so polarized (as can be seen by the flame level in this comment stream) most voters are very comfortable with divided government, even if that means swallowing some policies you don't agree with. The Bush-Rove government, when they had a Republican congress, proved that it was never about spending per se, but WHOM the spending benefits. The fact that their methodology is Borrow and Spend, rather than Tax and Spend, is politically convenient but just a smokescreen. Once this was proven to America, we showed how easy it is to vote out Congressional incumbents, and went back to divided government.

I expect Vermont to continue on the same route...Democrat Legislature, Republican Governor. It's the only way to keep rampant partisanship in check.

Pollina has claimed, and rightfully, that he has better name recognition than Symington - so he polls 7%!

Give me a break - even with the endorsements he's rec'd he MIGHT add up a couple of more points - but he ends up with no more than 10% MAX.

And he has handed the reins back to Douglas - who really does need to be ousted!

Well, if the media truly covered the race instead of horse racing it by covering how much money has been raised and printed accurate accounts of debates the numbers would be different.

However, the Vermont media prefers the top-down hierarchical two party status quo, so anythying that would interfere with their belief is not given real coverage. The media and party insiders like the American Idol style coverage. But unfortunately for them Vermonters are starting to see through the BS. Once people hear Gaye more they will change their tune. It is pathetic that the VT Democrats are so incompetent that the put up a lame candidate. Hey, the VSEA, NEA, and AFL CIO have changed soon the rest of VT will.

That's crap.

Pollina has gotten as much press as anyone in this election -- and he's still only getting 7% of the vote.

He is behind because people don't like him or his message.

Polina can only get 7% of the vote ... the Progs will try to point fingers and make excuses. They only have themselves to blame.

Polina has been a candidate for statewide office FOUR times now.

He lost every election he's ever run.

He has nobody to blame except himself.

Vermonters aren't buying his crap.

Tom...

"Because the country is so polarized (as can be seen by the flame level in this comment stream) most voters are very comfortable with divided government, even if that means swallowing some policies you don't agree with."

Ah, the ol' "vote doogie and stick with the clueless incompetent devil you know" song and dance.

Interesting take on why to give the jimi douglas experience another two-year encore, Tom. The Dems are gonna control the Vermont Legislature to an even greater extent, so we may as well stick with the doogie/dubie debacle.

And given his veto record, just when and where have shrub or doogie ever "swallowed some policies he may not necessarily have agreed with" in the interests of bipartisan accord."

According to Mr any nameless-nitwit to be named later on the street and the ignorant anonymous trash community, bipartisanship means the Dems do what Doogie or Shrub tell them to do whether they control the Legislative Branch or not.

Nice try. No Sale, Tom.

Hell of a job Hofie already let Uncle Ernie and Cousin Kevin off for good behavior in the interest of the business community with disastrous results.

Why the hell reward the dimwit who hired hofie's unqualified ass in the first place with a two-year contract extension.

That's like "improving security" by rewarding the nightwatchman who's been on duty the last six times the place has been robbed by making him head of security, tripling his salary and making accountable to no one but himself.

Even if he's not in on the robberies, he's doin' a lousy job.

Oy Gevalt! If Tito Francona was to stick some guy who's 0-'08 and hasn't hit a homer since 5/10/05 in the clean up spot, they'd run him outta town on a rail and rightfully so.

Shrub and Doogie haven't had hits since T-Ball.

Offer 'em a cigarette and a blindfold and bill their estates for the ammo and the firing squad's time.

The Bush-Rove government, when they had a Republican congress, proved that it was never about spending per se, but WHOM the spending benefits. The fact that their methodology is Borrow and Spend, rather than Tax and Spend, is politically convenient but just a smokescreen. Once this was proven to America, we showed how easy it is to vote out Congressional incumbents, and went back to divided government."

Gee, Tom, word that gops are lyin'-slime who are even worse with the economy than they are with national security ain't exactly news.

Truth be told, it's up there with "Breaking Story - Water is wet. More to Follow. Stay Tuned."

"I expect Vermont to continue on the same route...Democrat Legislature, Republican Governor. It's the only way to keep rampant partisanship in check."

Again with the "so what if he's had six years to prove that he's a clueless incompetent hack and a lousy liar, the Dems are gonna control the Legislature so let's stick with the doogie/dubie debacle in the interests of bipartisanship"

No sale, Tom.

nice to see you took a break from surfing porn, you sick pervert.

Pollinas a joke but so is Gaye Symington.

Jim Douglas is a joke but so is Brian Dubie.

Which makes the doogie/dubie debacle, what?

1) A train wreck?

2) The Black Death

3) Apocalypse Now?

4) Armageddon?

Mommy, who were those four horseman and why did they cut uncle hofie in half?

"I am shocked that Gaye is doing as poorly as she is. JWCOOP10 has been endorsing her since day 1."

She's not doogie and unlike Pollina, she's viable. Clearly, my enthusiasm is as boundless as your cluelessness, little fella.

So, when is Doogie gonna roll out the coveted coalition of the clueless/ignorant anonymous trash with bupkis endorsement.

What's his incompetent ass waitin' for, a 600 point drop in the DOW?

"Wake up Vermont. Don't you get it? Coop says Gaye is the answer. Line up and man up or be prepared to be called a gop-slime, shrub-lovin', ignorant, clueless cretin who should go where the climate suits his sheet and cheney himself."

Nice try, little nameless-nitwit fella.

Clearly, as the poll this thread is ostensibly about duly notes, not everyone is a member of the ignorant anonymous trash community or a doogie devotee.

Even among the 48 percent who allegedly back his sorry butt, your numbers are no bigger than the klan's

Say goodnight, greasy.

"Vote for Symington or Syminton."

Well, little nameless-nitwit fella, if they're offering two different spellings on the same ballot for the same office, that would indicate their are two different candidates running for the same office or the printer screwed up and they couldn't be bothered to change it because nobody was gonna show up so who gives a damn?

Just what does it have to do to get you off your duff and peek your interest, little fella, morph from a moth to a caterpillar to a butterfly on the fookin ballot?

Vote for Douglas or Douglas.

"There were literally no choices."

There's always at least two, little fella Vote or don't bitch and stuff a sock in it.

Are you really tellin' me that there were no school bond issues or municipal items on the ballot? Nothin' that would affect your property taxes or rent?

"I don't see how that single fact can be argued ... the sky is blue. The earth is round. There were no choices in this primary election."

Ya do it because you can and it's your civic duty little fella.

Just which part of that is givin' you trouble?

If it's dull and there's nothin' sexy on the ballot, then there's no lines to wait in. You're in and your out and ya know ya did your bit.

Ya don't blow it off because it's not fun enough or ya don't like the menu.

At this point, ya either get it or ya don't.

Suit yourself.

Cooper had 20 posts today I see.

Big man with a big mouth and a tiny little brain to save on the battery. That's our Jiffy.

I suppose he still wants to claim he has some sort of employment. Undoubtedly his boss and the crew gather around his desk as he posts he wisdom and they all cheer and clap.

Nope, sorry Jiffy. That's the folks at The Price is Right responding to the big sign that says "Act like happy idiots." They can't see you. They don't know who you are or even care who you are. It was all taped weeks ago. The little fat man with glasses is the host of the show not your boss.

You are still an unemployed loser.

This is your wake up call.

This is what happens when a state turns so far to the left - the best and brightest leave for a better future and in return we get the pathetic losers of the country like jw.

Sad.

Dear BFP bloggers,

Coopy won't be posting today. He was up far too late last night. I don't know how many times I have told him his bedtime is 9:30, no if's, and's or but's about it.

Sorry but a mom has to draw the line on discipline.

bubba...

"This is what happens when a state turns so far to the left - the best and brightest leave for a better future..."

Then why is your ignorant anonymous ass still here, bubbakis?

Assuming, of course, you ever were.

Don't stay on my account, bubbakis.

I'll miss ya, little fella.

Shoot, I may even shed a tear as I watch your ignorant anonymous ass's tail lights recede in the distance, but I'll get over it.

I'm sure I can work out a trade for your ignorant ass with the Mississippi Folks for a nameless-nitwit to be named later and a bag of of scuffed-up BP balls and fresh bupkis for bubbakis.

Always a pleasure.

NEK ...
"BFP polled 400 voters and they polled prior to the last 2 endorsements- they should save the ink and just call 400 more voters- if it helps, they can save time by getting a list from VSEA or NEA. Their polling is suspect anyway."

WCAX paid for this polling, not the BFP.

Don't confuse NEK with facts.
