Douglas moves up NGA ladder

This just in. Gov. Jim Douglas is now vice chairman of the National Governors Association. That means next year -- I assume only if he is re-elected -- he would become chairman.

It seems the NGA alternates between an R and a D and this year's new chairman is Gov. Edward Rendell of Pennsylvania. He's a Democrat.

If Douglas gets the chance to move to the top NGA job, he would join a roster that includes Gov. Howard Dean (1994-5) and Gov. Richard Snelling (1981-2).

So I wonder what he will make as his focus for the year. The gov at the top gets to pick a topic. Any suggestions?

-- Nancy Remsen

Comments:
Still nothing from Sam on the bogus story that he wrote about Pollina?

It's so sad to see a newspaper not care about the accuracy of its reporting.

Rendell must be mortified to have wimpy Jim as his understudy. Ed would eat Douglas for lunch.

Given the fact that the jimi douglas experience has always endeavored to do for Vermont what the Bush Administration has done for the United States of America.
The jimi douglas experience will continue to have the same focus the jimi douglas experience has always had - the, preservation and nurturing of the jimi douglas experience.

Oh yes Jimmy is at fault for all that is wrong with Vermont. Symington/Shumlin/Nease & Big Bird Partridge have nothing to do with our sorry state....let's just blame Jimmy and George for all our troubles...smart.oooh let's not forget JW (Nease) Coop

Isn't Douglas the Governor? Isn't he in charge of the state government? Doesn't he share some of the responsibility for the state of our state?

I guess he and his supporters just like to point fingers.

If you listen to Douglas, it's always someone else's fault.

C'mon Governor, do us all a favor and resign!!!

Douglas should focus on energy and how the States should coordinate their efforts into a complete energy plan that includes: nuclear, oil, wind, solar, bio-mass and hydro.
How nuclear energy has given Vermont the "lowest carbon footprint" national recognition award.

... and how Vermont Yankee will break Vermont's budget when Vermont Yankee needs to be decommissioned because Entergy hasn't set invested enough money in the decommissioning fund ...

Peter- we have discussed this before and this is only a half-truth. Fortunately the NRC is not letting them use these funds for storage expenses.

Is Peter the name you've given to the voice in your head?

The fund has already been shorted by $400 million.

Douglas is trying to let Entergy off the hook for the money -- thankfully, the NRC has shown some spine ... but the fund is still short.

AND ... if you think that nuclear energy is so clean, tell me what happens with the spent fuel rods?

I will leave the spent fuel rod storage issue to the experts who have been storing them all along without incidence in the US, France, Sweden Russia and Japan.
France, Sweden and Japan generate nearly 75% of their power though nuclear.

Oh -- it's someone else's problem. We don't have to think about it.

Nuclear waste is "green" -- don't worry about it.

We'll leave the problem solving to someone else.

We should just focus on creating the problem.

NEK is on to something. The NGA can make an impact on energy without having to wait for the ineffective Pelosi mafia to make a decision.

In individual conversations, people agree that we need to drill and we need nuclear power as a part of the overall solution but because it is politically unpopular, no one wants it in their state alone. It is not possible that all states beginning drilling programs but they all could implement nuclear programs.

In the spirit of share and share alike(since we are all Americans and in this together), the governors could agree to all take an equal step in solving the problem by proposing nationalizing and expanding the nuclear energy industry. I suggest:
1. The NRC would commission the design of an approved, single configuration of a nuclear plant.
2. Each state, in a show of solidarity, would agree to commission a facility in their state so that all contribute equally to the solution.
3. The government would build and operate the plants at its expense.
4. Each plant would meet the same safety standards, be constructed in an identical manner, operated in a identical manner and be subject to regular Government oversight.
5. The government would build and maintain a central waste disposal facility in a remote desert location (maybe Nevada- sorry Harry Reid).

Fifty new facilities would provide significant new capacity with a technology we understand and can implement today with each state contributing (or sharing the burden depending on your POV) equally.

It provides good paying jobs as the plants are built and come on line.

It allows time for the rational development and implementation of alternative technologies over a longer term.

Nationalizing the program reduces the nagging fear everyone has about Energy corporations, the evils of their profit incentive and its effect on safety. Additionally, it makes government funding immediately available so the plants could be constructed in a timely manner.

Or perhaps we could store the nuclear waste in your backyard!

Ah, so the Bush/Cheney gop-scum NRC is preventing Entergy from pulling a fast one and committing a crime your ignorant, clueless-cretin ass has been claiming they were never committing in the first place.

Lucky us.

Nice try, nekkie boy. Entergy can't even meet the decidedly less-than stringent standards of the incompetent-trash, Bush/Cheney, gop-scum NRC.

That's like Himmler citing Eichmann for Anti-Semitism.

You've really got to work at being incompetent, crooked and unethical enough to be cited by the most incompetent, crooked and unethical administration in US History, yet somehow, Entergy manages to keep pulling it off and you and your coalition of the clueless compatriots keep making excuses for them.

Why is that, little fella?

Always a pleasure.

Let's store the spent fuel rods in Coop's basement!

Anonymous has left a new comment on the post "Douglas moves up NGA ladder":

"Or perhaps we could store the nuclear waste in your backyard!"

Nah, the space between nekwit's ears has far more capacity.

Then, of course, unless the current owners choose to make it available for resettlement for all the still-displaced Katrina refugees, they can store nuke waste in that ranch in Crawford, Texas.

Always a pleasure.

Gee, ya'd think a smart company run by smart guys like Entergy would send their folks to some of these places and learn how they deal with the issue of nuclear waste. Either they haven't sent them there, they didn't learn anything, or the corporate-criminal slime likes of Entergy don't wanna spend the money to do it properly.

Why do ya think that is, nekwit?

Nice try.

Ah, so there's been no nuclear storage problems, eh, nekkie boy?

TMI - 1979. Chernobyl - 1986.

Always a pleasure.

Coopy said..."Ah, so the Bush/Cheney gop-scum NRC is preventing Entergy from pulling a fast one and committing a crime your ignorant, clueless-cretin ass has been claiming they were never committing in the first place."

Once again Coopy serves up the wrong facts.

You suggest the NRC was founded, owned and operated by Bush and Cheney.

In fact, you should be referring to it as the Democrat-scum NRC as the NRC as created as an act of the Democrat-controlled Congress in 1974. It seems Bush/Cheney only inherited an organization the Dems created.

As an additional fact, the Dems controlled the House from 1974-1994 and again since 2007 and the Senate from 1974 to 1980, from 1988-1994, 2001-2003 and again since 2007. Through that time they have failed to adequately address the mounting energy crisis. Just for yucks Coopy I would suggest they have been as in the pocket of big oil as you suggest Bush/Cheney is. Clearly they had their chance to show their good foresight and chickened out.

Captain America

TMI and Chernobyl were breaches but not spent rod storage issues.
BTW- you might not agree but the industry has come a long way since 1986.

Coop said..."You've really got to work at being incompetent, crooked and unethical enough to be cited by the most incompetent, crooked and unethical administration in US History"

This is compared to what the Pelosi/Reid led Congress with an approval rating of what <20%? I think there is a lot of credit to pass around when it comes to incompetence....Harry and Nancy are right at the front of the line.

Here's an idea! Let's decide how to store the spent nuclear waste BEFORE we generate any more!

Douglas could actually create an energy policy for the state of Vermont before he goes to the NGA and tells them how to do it.

NEK ....

"TMI and Chernobyl were breaches but not spent rod storage issues."

Breaches, eh?

"BTW- you might not agree but the industry has come a long way since 1986."

Really? Well, aside from the fact that, according to the Bush/Cheney gop-scum NRC, Entergy and Vt Yankee haven't come far enough and that, as an industry, they'd kinda have to, nekkie boy, you're gonna have to cough up a bit more by way of evidence than askin' me to take your ignorant, ill-informed, gop-slop spewin' ass's word on the subject, little fella.

Nice try, nitwit. Your ignorant anonymous ass is gonna have to do better than this ignorant slop.

I'm not happy with Congress, either, little factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest/nameless-nitwit fella, there's still too much gop-scum in it. How many Dems are livin' in the White House, deduce bag?

That's what I thought.

Congress should be impeaching the illegitimate trash in the WH and shippin' 'em to the Hague at RNC expense to be indicted, tried, convicted, sentenced and executed as the war criminal scum they so clearly are.

"I think there is a lot of credit to pass around when it comes to incompetence....Harry and Nancy are right at the front of the line."

Really? How many felony counts were they indicted on and convicted of for outing a covert CIA Agent, perjury and obstructing Justice of, little fella?

That's what I thought.

Once again, the only thing your ignorant anonymous ass has managed to prove is that ya can't prove anything and ya don't know what the fook you're talking about and you're still dumb, you're still scum and ya still got bupkis.

Those facts were never in dispute, little factually-challenged/nameless-nitwit fella, but thanks for clearin' that up, all the same, little fella.

Ya mean besides the fact that even Bush's EPA, has acknowledged Global Warming, that man-made contributions to it is destroying the environment and the reason we don't have an alternative source of energy is because ignorant, incompetent gop-trash like reagan killed all the funding for it when he moved into the WH and - at great expense - removed the solar panels that Carter had installed from the WH roof, nekwit?

"Coop- no one would ever meet your criteria unless they were far left liberals!"

Let's not worry about nuclear waste. If it's a problem, we can let someone else figure out what to do with it.

If worst comes to worst, we can always dump it in some other state.

Coopy asks..."How many Dems are livin' in the White House, deduce bag?"

There used to be two but they lost it. One couldn't keep his pants on and the other had no interest in environmentalism until he got out and could capitalize on it. Doesn't Gore have the biggest personal carbon footprint in the state of TN?

You all hate the Oil fat cats but have no problem with fat cat Al. I propose we place a windfall profit tax on the Environmental opportunist.

Coopy spews on..."In other words, people who know what the hell they're talking about, can distinguish their ass from their elbow and aren't funded by the the corporate-slime likes of Exxon, because nobody who isn't on the take from Exxon agrees with your ignorant, ill-informed, gop-scum ass "

So Coopy, do we have to go down this path again? You are a self-proclaimed smart guy. I assume you are not on the Exxon payroll. What's your plan to solve the problem big guy? I just got off the phone with all my fat cat friends down at Chevron. They were saying they were talking to their pals at Shell and they are all interested in knowing your strategy to solve the problem.

Serve it up pal. We are all ears. Don't have a plan? No surprise. That's what we thought.

I have seen a lot of nonsense posted since I put up a plan at 11:45AM but haven't seen anything substantial or executable from all you Einsteins, just insults and quick no's. What do you want to do?

Would you like to see a wind farm on every ridge line in VT or solar panels lining all the mountain ranges? Traditionally you have said no to that too. What's your suggestion or are you all just professional complainers?

C.A.

Hsve you started on the Wild Irish Rose already, Coopy? You are suggesting the reason there is no credible energy program is Reagan took solar panels off the White House roof effectively killing the great strides Carter made by having put them there. Sure...I see the connection. Cripes.

Since the start of the energy crisis the Dems controlled the House for 22 years and the Senate for 16 years. Carter had four years in office and all this time out of office. Clinton and Gore had 8 years...not a peep on the subject. You do have to give it to Gore though. Now that he realizes how big a fat cat you can be spreading the word, he is quite active. Curiously all the libs and environmentalists turn their back on his carbon footprint. No doubt standard there.

Tell us all the landmark legislation the Dems have proposed, passed and then had vetoed by the other side.

Check your shoes pal. I think you stepped in a big pile of coop.

Captain America

"Would you like to see a wind farm on every ridge line in VT or solar panels lining all the mountain ranges?"

Sure, why not? If it means energy independence, that would be a good thing.

Is that you Bernie Sanders?

One vote for ravishing the forest and the 'Vermont brand'. What will happen to leaf season and maple sugaring?

Any others?

Coopy said..."Ah, so the Bush/Cheney gop-scum NRC is preventing Entergy from pulling a fast one and committing a crime your ignorant, clueless-cretin ass has been claiming they were never committing in the first place."

"Once again Coopy serves up the wrong facts."

I do, eh?

"You suggest the NRC was founded, owned and operated by Bush and Cheney."

I "suggest" that, eh? As always, feel free to point out just where and when I "suggested" that, little lyin'-scum fella.

That's what I thought.

I didn't "suggest" anything, schmuck. I said the NRC was the Bush/Cheney, gop-scum NRC.

According to WIKI:

"The NRC is headed by five Commissioners appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the United States Senate for five-year terms. One of them is designated by the President to be the Chairman and official spokesperson of the Commission. The current chairman is Dr. Dale E. Klein. He has been confirmed with a term ending June 30, 2011."

Currently, there is one open seat that hasn't been filled because the WH hasn't nominated anyone to fill the position because they no longer have a gop-scum rubber-stamp Senate and the Dems aren't likely to approve another incompetent, unqualified rubber-stamp.

So, given the fact that all four current commissioners were nominated by an incompetent, illegitimate gop-scum President and approved by a thoroughly-corrupt, gop-scum Senate, just how are they not the Bush/Cheney gop-scum NRC, little fella?

Is it your ignorant anonymous ass's clueless-cretin contention that the NRC Members aren't appointed by the President and under the authority of the executive branch, auntie amerika?

"In fact, you should be referring to it as the Democrat-scum NRC as the NRC as created as an act of the Democrat-controlled Congress in 1974. It seems Bush/Cheney only inherited an organization the Dems created."

I should, eh? Well, given the fact that it was signed into law by the previous unelected gop-scum President who'd been brought into replace the previous unelected gop-scum VP who'd been brought in to replace the corrupt gop-scum VP who'd been forced to resign to keep his criminal ass out of jail making it a bipartisan effort and you factually incorrect, like your ignorant, anonymous ass, I'd be lying if I did and, unlike you,
the facts ain't doin' me no harm and I don't feel the need to do that.

Again:

"The NRC is headed by five Commissioners appointed by the President of the United States and confirmed by the United States Senate for five-year terms. One of them is designated by the President to be the Chairman and official spokesperson of the Commission. The current chairman is Dr. Dale E. Klein. He has been confirmed with a term ending June 30, 2011...."

As always, if you have evidence that this President - like every other President since 1974 does not appoint the five NRC Commissioners with the advice and consent of the Senate, feel free to cough it up.

That's what I thought.

"As an additional fact, the Dems controlled the House from 1974-1994and again since 2007 and the Senate from 1974 to 1980, from 1988-1994, 2001-2003 and again since 2007. Through that time they have failed to adequately address the mounting energy crisis."

Well, little factually-challenged fella, given the fact that when the Dems controlled the House from '74 - '94, gop-scum had controlled the WH from '69-'77 and from '81-'93, the Dems controlled the WH from '77-'81 and from '93-'95 for a total of 6 of those 20 years and gop-scum controlled Congress for 12 years from '95-'07 covering the last six of Clinton's eight years in Office and the first six of shrub's, they were never in position to do what needed to be done to deal with the Energy Crisis or block gop-scum efforts to compound and prolong it.

Your ignorant, lyin'-slime, gop-scum ass can continue to hamhandedly attempt to shuck and jive all ya want, little fella, but thanks to a 5-4 Decision by a Supreme Court with seven out of nine gop-appointed Judges, gop-scum controlled all three branches of the Federal Government from '01-'07 and a couple of Texas oilmen managed to take $30/barrel oil into $140/barrel oil, take gas from $1.35/gallon and heating oil from $1.25/gallon to $5/gallon.

"Just for yucks Coopy I would suggest they have been as in the pocket of big oil as you suggest Bush/Cheney is. Clearly they had their chance to show their good foresight and chickened out."

Yeah, you could "suggest" that, cap'n clueless. You'd be lyin' your ignorant, ill-informed, factually-challenged ass off, but you could "suggest" that.

Then again, while you've certainly provided me with more than a few yucks, you've never let the fact that you were lyin'-ass gop-scum without a case or a clue who didn't know what the fook you were talking about slow your ignorant anonymous ass down before, crazy lady, it would be unreasonable to expect ya to let the facts stand in your way now.

That's not a suggestion, little fella. That's a fact.

Ya did that right after ya did those things.

You may or may not be fat, little fella. Frankly, I don't give a damn, deduce bag. You have, however, made it abundantly clear that you're still dumb, you're still scum and ya still got bupkis and ya plan on stayin' that way.

That ya have proved, little fella. Ya didn't have to since those facts have never been in dispute, but, nevertheless, you have managed to do that.

So, leaving aside the fact that there's nothin' remotely, intelligent, legitimate or serious about you, your thoroughly-discredited, ignorant-trash point of view or your pathetic excuse for a "plan", in your factually-challenged/fundamentally-dishonest/clueless-cretin "mind", your ignorant anonymous ass's notion of what people have "traditionally" opposed constitutes evidence.

Time for a change - Gov Douglas has to go!

You had quite a busy afternoon of demagoguery yesterday….a lot of words, mostly insults, but no plans. Coopy, go down to your clubhouse immediately, meet with the other members of the He-man Woman-haters Club and stay there until you come up with a plan.

I appreciate the difficult position you are in. Your official talking points have nothing of substance on the Energy crisis so it is difficult to copy and paste anything meaningful. Perhaps you can check with your pals at Air America or the Daily Kos to see if they have anything new to offer other than the ‘Reagan took off the solar panels off the White House and killed the energy program’ story. It was lame the first time it was told.

BTW, thanks for the extra sprinkles on my ice cream cone yesterday. I don't think your boss noticed.

Of course not….telling the truth is the right thing to do.

How about a windfall tax on the income he has made as an Environmental opportunist (he sure didn’t seem to care about it when he was making the paltry salary of the Vice President) or

How about on the carbon footprint he has (just a little contradictory to the challenge he has served up to the rest of us) or

His hypocrisy of advocating one set of philosophies and values and living another.

After all he is in the top 1% of earners....

Ah, nek, the GOP took it to a new much higher level in 1994 when they took over the US House.

And, then to an even higher level as they circled the wagons on Pres Bill Clinton.

Then Karl Rove and his permanent party majority idea took it to the states to make it even more political - in essence providing a stranglehold on states to manage themselves.

"I appreciate the difficult position you are in. It was lame the first time it was told."

In other words, you're still dumb, you're still scum and your ignorant anonymous ass has still got bupkis.

Thanks for clearin' that up, little fella.

"BTW, thanks for the extra sprinkles on my ice cream cone yesterday. I don't think your boss noticed."

And when did your ignorant anonymous ass prove I worked at Ben and Jerry's, little factually-challenged fella? Ya include that with the "I'm Chuck Lacy and/or Doug Hoffer horsebrit you've been failin' to substantiate for the past 8 months, little fella?

Then again, when has your ignorant anonymous ass substantiated anything you've said since ya got here, little fella?

That's what I thought.

You remain 0-everything, little fella.

In other words, you're still dumb, you're still scum and your ignorant anonymous ass has still got bupkis.

Thanks for clearin' that up, little fella.

Always a pleasure.
Dismissed.
