Political notes from Free Press staff writers Terri Hallenbeck, Sam Hemingway and Nancy Remsen

Jim and John

Gov. Jim Douglas and Republican presidential candidate Sen. John McCain don't agree on milk policy. And they aren't in lock step on troop withdrawal/extended surge in Iraq.

Today at the governor's press conference, reporters explored with Douglas a couple of other areas -- just to get a sense of the depth of Douglas' support for McCain's views.

Global warming: Douglas said, "He has talked about it in very general terms." That, Douglas seemed to be suggesting, was better than not talking about it at all.

Expanded health care coverage for kids: Douglas said didn't know how McCain felt about that idea. It might be worth checking out since the Bush administration opposed any expansion and ended up in a wrestling match with Congress and many governors last fall over his unwaivering stance. Douglas repeated his position today -- that the federally funded State Children's Health Insurance Program ought to be expanded.

Douglas said a few differences didn't weaken his support for McCain. People never agree on everything, he said.

-- Nancy Remsen

Comments:
Seems like Obama's views on these and other issues might be more in line with Douglas's than McCain's. But being the good little GOP boy scout he is, Douglas will ignore that truth and tow the party line. Grow a set Jimmy.

If McCain does come to Vermont again, it appears our governor won't be able to provide full state police protection for anybody. Didn't Doesless say he was committed to public safety and fully staffing the staties? Are there ant private contractors offering police services? Please call our governor if you exist.

Poor Tremblay. *he's in for a rude awakening. Snelling's solution to budget balancing, and it looks like Douglas's too, is to keep jobs on record but unfilled.

Why in the world would we want rent-a-cops instead of trained professionals? More Blackwater?
No thanks. There's good reason the public are protected by individuals who have no profit motive in citizen protection.

While on the subject of public safety, with a small digression--just want to say what a great job the Burlington Police dispatcher and officers did this week in saving a life. They deserve to be commended. Thanks to the BFP for covering the story.

John McCain's campaign co-chair was just indicted for fraud and extortion. What next?

Fellow Arizonian and co-chair of Mc Cain's campaign in Arizona, Rick Renzi has been charged by the Feds with fraud and extortion in land deals involving swaps for federal lands. Three scandals have hit the Republican's campaign this week. Let's see what the "Liberal" press does with this.

What about our Washington delegation? We sure could use a bridge to nowhere up here (or the cash in kind). Are Bernie, Pat, and Peter inoculated from responsibility?

Responsibility for what? For McCain's behavior?

For the real job being done in Washington

McCain doesn't have 1191 "pledged" delegates yet. If Mike Huckabee can keep McCain from getting them, he can force a brokered convention. Huckabee has closed to within 4% in Texas.

Well, Thank you for that edition of the Gospel According to the Tennessee Taliban.

It's always nice to know they're there to help erect a bridge linking the United States of America and the 17th Century.

Gee, as if I didn't have enough reasons not to vote for Huck Finnished as we watch yet another campus evacuated and placed on lock down because of yet another deranged nitwit armed with on or more guns, it's comforting to know that no psycho will be forced to wait to load up on guns and ammo if Huck has anything to say about it.

After all, why bite the nra hand that feeds ya when ya can just blame it on Judas Priest, AC/DC or the Dixie Chicks.

Dismissed.

Another target, jw? Huckabee is a good man whose character can only be enhanced by the quality of his detractors. By the way, I and I guess everyone else is STILL waiting to hear just WHO is the "Tennessee Taliban"!

I thought so.

Gee, that's swell, little bigot boy. Feel free to vote for the schmuck. I'm sure you'll be very happy together.

"By the way, I and I guess everyone else is STILL waiting to hear just WHO is the "Tennessee Taliban"!"

First of all, little ignorant white-supremacist scumbag fella, you don't think at all. Not about this. Not about anything.

People with the capacity for thought don't hold or share your ignorant, white-supremacist trash beliefs and "values".

Secondly, if you consider "I and I guess everyone else" to be the voice of "Average Vermonters" when "everyone else" consists of nothing more than your ignorant ass and a couple of nameless-nitwits and pathetic punks posting as anonymous, then you're even lower on the evolutionary scale than you think I think you are.

You know, the very evolutionary scale Huck Finnished claims doesn't exist.

Dismissed.

jw - Bill Maher still wants to know what in hell the "Tennessee Taliban" is.

JW spews...Dazzle me, little Anti-American dude. Cough up that gop goo that you spew so well."

According to recent surveys by American Solutions, here are the most Widely Held Views of Americans. I find it comforting to know most Americans don't share JW's POV.

96% believe it is important for the President and Congress to address the issue of social security in the next few years.

95% believe we have an obligation to be good stewards of God’s creation for future generations.

94% believe children should be allowed a moment of silence to pray to themselves in public school if they desire.

93% believe Al Qaeda poses a very serious threat for the United States.

93% believe in the worker visa program, each worker should take an oath to obey the United States law, and to be deported if the worker commits a crime while in the United States.

93% believe it is important to acknowledge today that the reference to God in the Declaration of Independence – that we are endowed by our Creator with the rights to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

92% believe our focus should clearly be to provide long-term solutions instead of short-term fixes.

91% believe we should dramatically increase our investment in math and science education.

91% believe we should hold city governments to the same standards for cleaning waste water as are applied to the private industry.

90% believe we favor a law that allows public school children to take a moment of silence for prayer if they desire.

90% approve of a Christmas tree or a Menorah being placed on public property during the holiday season.

90% believe we should give tax credits to homeowners and builders who incorporate alternative energy sources in their homes, like solar, wind, and geothermal energy.

Huckabee seems like a wonderful person and a great husband but he is not the right person for President of the United States.

To 8:50 poster: That poll was obviously not taken in Vermont.

True. It was taken in a cross-section of America. Clearly the view of the 600K that live here diverges from the mainstream.

Case in point.... JW

"To 8:50 poster: That poll was obviously not taken in Vermont."

It's nice to know there still is a little sanity and sense of values left....

Really? On what issue, little fella? Ya got anything specific or is it just more of that gop goo that you spew so well, little fraudulent fella?

That's what I thought.

Moreover, I find it not at all surprising that a quick Google of "American Solutions" reveals it to be and illegitimate-trash front group outta Silicon Valley for illegitimate-trash titan, newt gingrich.

That said, do you have anything from any legitimate organizations, little fraudulent fella, or is newtonian nonsense the best ya can dredge up?

That's what I thought.

Ya got bupkis, schmuck. Hit the bricks, recycle your factually-challenged and fundamentally-dishonest rubbish, come back with something legit and on the level and stop wastin' my time with your delusional dreck.

Shalom, schmuck.

JW... prove Newt Gingrioh is not legitimate. He has had quite a distinguished career, like his politics or not.

He has, eh? And your evidence substantiating your claim is....?

Nice try, nitwit. Once again, little factually-challenged, fundamentally-dishonest, fraudulent fella, it's not up to me make your bogus case for ya.

That's your burden. Clearly you can't meet it.

Unless and until you can, Newt remains factually-challenged, fundamentally-honest slime who was found guilty of ethical misconduct by his own Ethics Committee and forced to pay a 300 thousand dollar fine for misleading the Committee and forced to resign the Speakership in disgrace under a continuing ethical cloud by members of his own caucus after the gops lost 5 Congressional seats in the '98 election when they had expected to pick up 50-60 seats.

That should keep ya busy for a while, little factually-challenged, fundamentally-dishonest fella.

I can see why you'd like him, little fella. You've got a lot in common.

Oy Vey, are you meshuggah. Newt frickin' gingrich. Talk about clangin' one off the coke bottles. My biggest problem was slowin' down my swing enough to keep from pullin' it foul, schmuck.

Dismissed.

JW,

Newt sends his best and says stop by next time you are in town.

at 11:50 AM JW rants "Unless and until you can, Newt remains factually-challenged, fundamentally-honest....."

JW, you have seen the light. Thank you for recognizing Newt as fundamentally-honest. Finally something we can all agree on. The closet Republican is coming out in you. Dick Cheney and Scooter send their best.

Gee, thanks little fundamentally-dishonest, factually-challenged typo-trash fella.

I hadn't heard from ya for a day or two and I was gettin' worried about your ignorant, ill-informed, sorry sack of gop-slop butt.

If I don't give ya a typo to rag me over, ya got bupkis.

Of course, if ya got bupkis unless and until I make a typo, ya still got bupkis.

That said, tell me, little fundamentally-dishonest fella, what is it you admire most about newt?

Is it the draft-dodgin' chicken-hawk slime thing, the dead-beat dad thing or the dictate your terms for divorce to your first wife as she's comin' out of anesthesia after cancer surgery thing that you find so compelling and admirable, little coalition of the clueless cretin fella?

Enlighten me, little fundamentally-dishonest fella.

Just what makes newt so wonderful in a psychotic, gop-slop kinda way?

JW said..."If I don't give ya a typo to rag me over, ya got bupkis"

Oh that's right, how silly of me to have forgotten. Preying on typo's is the exclusive domain of jw.

As far as bupkis goes, I give you your daily allotment of insults as I know without them you have bupkis. We are getting bored with the same old routine. Please talk among your chums at the Jethro Bodine Academy and come up with some new insults please before you lose the last of your readership.
