Political notes from Free Press staff writers Terri Hallenbeck, Sam Hemingway and Nancy Remsen

The move to Montpelier

The moving van pulled in and we are back in Montpelier (we being Nancy Remsen and me). Spent the last six months of office time in the big city of Burlington. Lovely place, really, but it is good to be back in the capital.

Spent most of the day unpacking boxes of files, finding the right spot on the desk for the Kleenexes and the pens. Moving is not one of my favorite things.

Other parts of the day included press gaggles with the governor and the House speaker. Yesterday we chatted with the Senate pro tem. Lots of talk about lottery, marijuana, energy, money, or the lack thereof.

We will be previewing the upcoming legislative session in the paper Sunday-Tuesday, so be sure to tune in. The fun kicks off Tuesday inside the domed building.

Speaking of political fun that's about to kick off, Gov. Jim Douglas said he has decided on a presidential candidate, but he's not saying who it is. Wouldn't say whether former Vermont GOP Chairman Jim Barnett, who's heading John McCain's campaign in New Hampshire, would be happy or angry with his choice.

Speaking of candidates, we ran into Anthony Pollina in downtown Montpelier. He says it (meaning candidacy for governor) gets closer and closer all the time. Also says he keeps hearing wild rumors about who's running and who's not. Some of them, he believes not to be true.

Got to get back to unloading boxes.

- Terri Hallenbeck

Bubbles, you couldn't bag the majority of votes in Essex Country to buy your take back Vermont trash, let alone the entire Kingdom.

Ya best load up the truck and move to Mississippi, Hills that is, racist cesspools, whites-only bars.

Hopefully Jim Barnett will be happy with Douglas' choice.

McCain is the candidate of choice in the Republican field - he is a man of honor and integrity who can work with both Republicans and Democrats.

Romney is a phony, Huckabee is dangerously inexperienced when it comes to foreign policy, Thompson is lazy, Giuliani is a loose cannon, and Paul is on the fringe.

The real question is: "When the BFP reporters return to Montpelier, will anyone notice?" No offense, but you're both pretty much phoning it in.

Nancy & Terri --

It would be great if you would really challenge Jim Douglas this session - rather than buying into Jason's garbage.

^^

In the words of Aerosmith: Dream On!

You hate these journalists so much that you read their blog every day ...

"Romney is a phony"

As one lifetime republican said to me:

"He's too slick"

I really dislike the guy due to his TV ads that polarize republicans and democrats. For example, the "when republicans behave like democrats.." ads.

I expect to have some stone throwing, but these were way too early and just sets the stage as him being uncooperative and not willing to work in bipartisan ways.

If I were doing a process of elimination on all candidates (r and d), the first swipe of my pen would land on Romney and Clinton.

"You hate these journalists so much that you read their blog every day ..."

"Hate" is a strong word, and it's not their blog I'm reading, it's the comments from readers. If I just read what they were writing, I would be learning about who Jim Douglas supports for president, which I could give two s**ts about.

My opinion is that Nancy and Teri could do much better than what they are. I'm betting their editors won't let them though.

Actually, whether you like the job they're doing or not, we're all using the blog they manage for the BFP to comment and to read the comments of others so let's give credit where credit is due.

That said, ya gotta love the way this is being spun that HRC is this huge loser when she got more votes finishing third than Huckabee got for his alleged triumph when she allegedly got trounced with 30 percent of a pie roughly twice the size of the one Huckabee got 34 percent to Romney's 25 percent of the half-size gop pie.

You do the math.

Moreover, Iowa was carried twice by Bush. That's bad news for gops.

Gee, that's a shame.

Secondly, if anyone got smoked it was Romney who outspent Huckabee 17-1 and proved himself to be Steve Forbes - The next generation.

While the allegedly-trounced Hillary still has a shot at winning NH, Romney was already trailing McCain there and stands a good chance of getting smoked and unable to buy a win there, too.

Bummer.

Toss in Rudy's 4 percent on the heels of Ron Paul's 10 percent and it's abundantly clear that the only Presidency Il Duce Giuliani has in his future is President of the Bad Comb-over Club for Men.

So, that leaves the gop establishment with the prospect of getting behind McCain - whom they hate with a passion - to stop Huckabee - whom they also hate with a passion - while they face the likelihood of not having Hillary to fire up their dispirited base, because they clearly hate Hillary more than they like their own candidates.

So, without Hillary hatred to pull them through, the gops are really up against it.

Bummer.

Giulliani as president.

That is laughable.

At least Giulliani proved he COULD improve a sewer like New York City. On the other hand, we have (1) The Breck girl, Edwards, with his $400 coiffur and millions of dollars from hedge funds, (2) Obama Hussein, your basic Chicago crooked pol, (3) Hillary, the Cattle-futures Queen, Rose Law firm crook, Whitewater co-conspirator, protector of the little people (like the little people she fired at the travel office) , and (4) the rest of the assorted nut cakes like Space-travelor Kucinich, hair-plug Biden, and a New Mexico governor who has already committed the cardinal sin of a democrat, HE LOWERED TAXES! Gee, guess Rudy doesn't look so bad after all!

nah, Giulliani is a laughable choice as president.

"Whitewater co-conspirator" ???

If you're still holding onto that old lie, you're more foolish than I thought.

The $15 million dollar investigation by the independend council found absolutely no wrong doing on behalf of the Clintons.

I guess you just like to keep the lie alive ... what's next? Stories from Vince Foster's ghost?

Oh, I almost forgot - Web Hubbell got paid off by the Clinton's and their pals to take the rap, thus taking the heat off the Arkansas grifters, Hill and Bill!

Giulliani is a joke and so is Pollina.

WOW!! That's amazing!! Got any proof??

No??

Interesting.

These are the same moronic smears taht we've been hearing for 16 years. Dozens of Congressional investigations turned up nothing. But the smears continue.

Web Hubbels' words: "I'm not rolling over again!". DUH!!!

Just amazing...how little you leftist morons know. Either: (1) You're too young to remember the almost-daily crimes of the Clinton grifters (2) you're too STUPID to acknowledge the almost-daily crimes of the Clinton grifters (3) You know everything I say is right on but don't want to admit it . Here's a simple exercise for jw and his fellow morons: who is Web Hubbell and what was his claim to fame in the 90's? Who was Henry Cisneros and what was his claim to fame in the 90's? Who was Ron Brown and what was his claim to fame in the 90's? Who was....oh, forget it, I guess even a nitwit like jw gets my point. Or not.

In today's Free Press story about Pollina making it official that he's running for Gov.:

"Pollina, of Middlesex, ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2000 and lieutenant governor in 2002."

. . . and unsuccessfully for Governor again in 2008.

The guys who weren't convicted of outing a Covert CIA Agent Administration, obstructing justice and making the three guys you mention look like Eagle Scouts.

"Who was....oh, forget it, I guess even a nitwit like jw gets my point. Or not."

Nice try, nitwit. You don't have a point.

When stacked up against the illegitimate, war criminal trash currently occupying the WH, those guys look like Doctors Without Borders while Hillary is busy making Mother Theresa look like Leona Helmsley.

Veteran or Virgin, everyone has been there to see the crimes of the Bush Administration and the price this Country will long be paying for their criminal incompetence and divisive drivel.

The last best hope of the gops has come down to a contest between Huck Finished and McCain. The gop establishment hates them both. It's just a question of which one they hate more.

Now that may not even have Hillary Hatred to fire up your ignorant, bigoted Tennessee Taliban base, you're a dispirited party with a stiff wind in your face who can count on no independents that gets to go to War with a party with the facts, the law, history and the people on their side and the wind at their backs.

You're starin' at 4 Smokin' Aces, shmendrik, you can't even muster up a pair of deuces and Diebold will not be allowed to so much as touch the cards let alone deal.

Read 'em and weep, little fella. Read 'em and weep.

The Sun is rapidly setting on this Bush League Operation that is the 43rd Reich and you're all gonna swing in the Hague for Crimes against Humanity and High Treason.

Enjoy.

Always a pleasure.

"that gets to go to War with a party with the facts, the law, history and the people on their side and the wind at their backs."

God save us from Bush, but the alternative aint exactly Holy.

Poor little poop - his dream girl Hillary isn't doing too well - and now her top fund-raiser Norman Hsu is off to iron city for 3 years! Guess they'll have to find out what Johnny Chung is doing these days! Or Susan MacDougall. And then there's Bill, who is going to "bail out the comeback kid"! Guess if she somehow in a nightmare world actually became President, she'd have Bill to run to if someone like Kim Il Jung made a face at her! Cheer up, poop, it's only going to get WORSE! Take Back Vermont!

"Guess if she somehow in a nightmare world actually became President, she'd have Bill to run to...."

and don't underestimate how much ol' Bill is looking forward to a brand new set of White House interns :)

"Ah, the ol' "they saw the same intel as the President" song and dance, eh?"

Yup, they ALL knew it was bogus. Didn't you?

"As for this bogus war authorization nonsense, they authorized giving the punk the keys to the car, they didn't authorize him to . . ."

Nice try, Mr. DNC history-correction spinmeister flak. That's exactly what they did: gave him a blank check.

Go preach your revisionist nonsense to someone who's dumb enough to believe it.

Yeah, the dems were "conned" by Bush - and we would want someone supposedly that dumb to be president? DUH! Take Back Vermont.

You said it, not me, little fella.

Interesting how my ignorant, ill-informed, "loyal dues-paying" Democrat, anonymous little bubbles apologist friend considers bubbles to have an argument that needs refuting in the first place.

"Great argument Einstein. Crawl back under your rock."

Thanks, little fella, but I don't need my good stuff to cope with the knuckle-draggin' nitwit likes of you.

The past 7 weeks have clearly demonstrated I'll never have a day that off and you'll never have a day that good.

We're headin' into the last year of the Bush Administration, little fella. Your boy had a gop rubber-stamp Congress for his first 6 years and he's still got a gop Judiciary makin' excuses for him and lettin' him off the hook.

Why do you and bubbles feel the need to blame Clinton for Bush's failures, little fella?

As always, little fella, you've just made another in an endless series of allegations you can't substantiate, prove, or sustain in any way shape or form.

Ya got bupkis, boychick. Bupkis.

"Ah, the ol' "they saw the same intel as the President" song and dance, eh?"

"Yup, they ALL knew it was bogus. Didn't you?"

I don't recall seeing it or getting a vote, little fella.

Secondly, Bush and Cheney knew it was false, boychick, and they only showed the Dems what they wanted them to see. That clearly establishes intent.

The Dems made the mistake of trusting an untrustworthy administration.

Since when is the party being conned required to know they're being conned to prove they've being conned in the eyes of the law, little fella?

That's what I thought.

If they knew they were being conned, they wouldn't continue to be conned.

Unlike Clinton, they committed perjury and obstructed justice, little fella.

That's why scooter got convicted, the rest of 'em are dodgin' subpoenas, invoking bogus privelage claims, asking for and being offered immunity to one extent or another while hoping to be able to run out the clock and shrub can crank up the pardon machine like gops always do only more so.

It's why shrub's latest AG has ordered them to be investigated for destroying evidence.

As for this bogus war authorization nonsense, they authorized giving the punk the keys to the car, they didn't authorize him to . . .

"Nice try, Mr. DNC history-correction spinmeister flak. That's exactly what they did: gave him a blank check."

They did, eh? Ya best give the facts a first glance, little fella. They authorized giving him the keys to the car.

The gettin' hammered, hittin' a pole, killin' or maimin' the 40-50 thousand troops ridin' shotgun along with the half million Iraqis in the back seat while squandering the surplus and making the US arguably the most universally loathed Country on the face of the Earth was his idea.

Always a pleasure my little loyal dues-paying Democrat who voted twice for Clinton, once for Gore and once for Kerry friend. Always a pleasure.

Interesting how my ignorant, ill-informed, "loyal dues-paying" Democrat, anonymous little bubbles apologist friend considers bubbles to have an argument that needs refuting in the first place.

Ah, you're givin' me the ol' that was the other "anonymous" song and dance, eh?

Feel free to prove it, little fella.

"Three off-the-meds posts in a row by jeff cooper of montpelier who wants to be a DNC propaganda-meister."

Is that supposed to rattle me, little fella?

You're the one who not only felt but continues to feel the need to blend in with the other brain-dead bush-leaguers, kiddo.

Bubbles may not have a brain in his head, but at least he doesn't feel the need to claim, "you've got the wrong bubbles.", now does he, little fella?

Well, now that you've lost your bogus "you're "anonymous", too, jwcoop10, just like us - get it!" song and dance ya really don't have much left to work with now do ya, little fella?

In other words, ya got bupkis, little fella. Bupkis.

Always a pleasure.

"Unlike Clinton, they committed perjury and obstructed justice, little fella. "

Wasn't ol' Willie on the verge of being impeached?

...I never had relations with that woman. Said to the country...how true was that again?

JW did they teach you a new word at the Jethro Bodine Institue of Higher Learning yesterday?

Poor little poop - his dream girl Hillary isn't doing too well - and now her top fund-raiser Norman Hsu is off to iron city for 3 years! Guess they'll have to find out what Johnny Chung is doing these days! Or Susan MacDougall. And then there's Bill, who is going to "bail out the comeback kid"! Guess if she somehow in a nightmare world actually became President, she'd have Bill to run to if someone like Kim Il Jung made a face at her! Cheer up, poop, it's only going to get WORSE! Take Back Vermont!

When challenged, jw will cavalierly deny anything he previously stated or implied.

Like when Bush I denied that he ever said "no new taxes" despite the fact that it was on tape.

Anonymous has left a new comment on the post "The move to Montpelier":

"When challenged, jw will cavalierly deny anything he previously stated or implied."

In other words, once again, ya got bupkis, little anonymous fella.

For the umpteenth time, if ya got it, cough it up. If ya don't, stop whining and stuff a sock in it.

If ya could, you would. Ya haven't cause ya can't.

You've had 7 weeks to come up with something on me and the best you've been able to muster up to date is "No, I don't have any proof and I never will but you know you said it." is as close to evidence as you've ever gotten and that ain't evidence now any more than it was then, little anonymous putz.

Oh, by the way, ya might wanna brush up on that whole implied/inferred thing, little fella.

Clearly, that's not your strong suit, either.

"Like when Bush I denied that he ever said "no new taxes" despite the fact that it was on tape."

Actually, it's nothing like that, little fella. That constitutes actual, irrefutable evidence.

Clearly, that's a commodity you rarely - if ever - deal in.

So, unless and until you demonstrate an ability to meet a bar you've yet to meet and show no evidence of being able to meet, ya got bupkis.

If I said it, prove it. If you can't. Stuff a sock in it. Ya had bupkis when I got here. You've had bupkis the entire time I've been here and you'll have bupkis when I'm gone.

Little piles and puddles of anonymous bupkis is all you've ever been good for and it's all you'll ever be good for, little fella.

On what planet?

Odds are ZERO !!

They will be lucky to keep 7 more likely to lose 1 or 2

Copenrath will lose, Doyle is always a ? because of age and health and Snelling is weakest of the Chitt 6.

Only in Vermont could a party that arguably produced the greatest numbers of idiots and overall buffoons, and produced the least amount of meaningful legislation look forward to increasing it's all-ready majority rule, not to mention probably putting back the same leadership geniuses! Vermont is now an official ward of the country and should not be allowed to have representatives in Washington, nor play with sharp objects.

Isn't that Republican Hinda Miller vulnerable as well? If she's not, she should be.

And what about Dick Mazza? He's about as Republican as a legislator can get. Take his sorry butt out too!

What did Mazza and Hinda Miller do wrong? Show a little common sense? No place in the party FOR THEM, by jeezum crow!

"What are the odds ??'

Hinda Miller is a Democrat. And I believe that Snelling is one of the top vote-getters in Chittenden County.

There's no argument in your case, tiny bubbles, but ya better take down your 2004 calendar. The gops aren't in the majority any more and toxic tommy delay will be lucky to stay out of the slam.

Who is going to run for LT Gov?

actually, snelling has come in 6th out of 6in both of the last 2 elections.

dennis mcmann - a wacko nobody - almost beat her in 2006.

Snelling needs to be sent packing, as do Miller and Mazza. Aren't these areas supposed to be Prog hotbeds? If so, why can't they unseat these do-nothing legislators? If you can't defeat them, how the hell are you ever going to beat Douglas with Pollina?

"actually, snelling has come in 6th out of 6in both of the last 2 elections."

And not by much. The closest person was a dem and all the other republicans trailed by 10 thousand or so votes.

Again, while the only thing Pollina has been able to accomplish politically to date is inflicting Brian Dubie on the State of Vermont, the way things are trending, in a two-person race, he just might be able to knock Douglas off. It's still a long shot but it's not beyond the realm of possibility.

Three terms of the Jimi Douglas Experience is more than enough for the State of Vermont. I don't see a lot of bics bein' flicked to bring him back for another encore.

Nobody needs to see him do Wild Thing again.

If the Dems field a strong candidate who runs a good campaign and the VDP backs him, Douglas can be beat. If Racine had run a better campaign, he would have beaten him in the first place.

The VDP should put all its resources into House and Senate races. Allow Pollina to beat up Douglas (at least as much as a poseur can) and we'll settle in for another two years of Doesless and his band of hacks. At least though, if the VDP has done the above, Doesless will face an even larger majority, hopefully capable of overturning his vetos (but last year's circus doesn't give me all that much hope).

Democrats/or more of them is not a
viable solution in and of itself.
