Political notes from Free Press staff writers Terri Hallenbeck, Sam Hemingway and Nancy Remsen

In the audience (updated at 2 p.m.)

Who packs the House when the governor delivers his State of the State? From where I'm squeezed with other members of the press herd, I see UVM President Dan Fogel, front and center in the balcony; all the top brass from the state bureaucracy; members of the governor's staff; and the ever-so-well connected Steve Terry (former Rutland Herald editor, v-p at Green Mountain Power). Downstair, lobbyists, lawmakers' families and plain folks line the walls. It sounds like Fenway Park before the game begins (no hots dogs, though)

Oooh...do tell. What are they wearing?

What snappy outfits did our leaders have on? One can only imagine!

Steve Terry must have been checking out Ayers Senate seat and wondering how it will fit him in'09

Last year the applause was for the
recount winner Tom Salmon. The national election is shaping up as close as that!

I hate to confuse ya with the facts, Rip, but you're about years behind.

Last Jan. Tom Salmon was sworn in.

And immediately thereafter he went out and had a drink. Or two.

With his four kids?

Hey, I saw him after that ceremony
at the Capitol Plaza with his wife and four kids. Congrats to him!

Deb Markowitz for Governor
Matt Dunne for Lt Governor

Are you high?

His name should be salmon, because he sure does flop around a lot. What a letdown this guy has been.

To who - Randy Brock?

Go, Matt Dunne.

Is Randy Brock running against Welch this year? I hope so.

So does Welch.

Bring it.

"Bring it."

Hey, if you've got the psychosis, buddy, I've got the time.

Personally, I think the great gas mileage of the Hummer would be an easier sell, little fella, but, hey, it's your funeral.

Always a pleasure.

And which of the several internal voices you're having a conversation with does the above respond to?

Yeah, Brock could give Welch a run for his money!

Yeah, just like he did with Tom Salmon, little fella.

He couldn't be trusted to count votes any better than he could be trusted to count money.

Always a pleasure.

It doesn't matter, little fella. They can all distinguish a D from a P, read a ballot and know the difference between 2000 and 2006 which leaves you outta your league against any or all of them which is why none of 'em are psychotic enough to think Brock has a shot against Welch.

Reality, little fella. You should visit sometime. I'll give you and bubbles a rate on a room.

Always a pleasure.
