Report card on the war

Rep. Peter Welch is pointing to a new report assessing the war in Iraq, and urging Republicans in Congress to join the call for ending the war.

This is AP's report on the report:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Iraq’s security forces have made “uneven progress” and
will be unable to take over security on their own in the next 12 to 18 months,
according to an independent assessment.

The study, conducted by a 20-member panel led by retired Gen. James Jones,
found the Iraqi Army shows promise of becoming a viable, independent security
force with time. But the group offers a scathing assessment of Baghdad’s
Ministry of Interior and recommends scrapping Iraq’s national police force,
which it describes as dysfunctional and infiltrated by militias.

The review is one of several studies that Congress directed in May, when it
agreed to fund the war for several more months but demanded that the Bush
administration and independent groups assess U.S. progress in the four-year war.

Welch called on Republicans to do as retiring Sen. John Warner has done. Warner recently called on President Bush to bring home 5,000 troops to show Iraq's government he's serious about speedier reforms:

“This non-partisan investigation confirms what a majority of Americans and
a growing majority of Congress already know: the President's policy in Iraq is a
failure and it is time to bring our troops home."
...

“Since the President refuses to act, Congress must. And the U.S.
House has. While we have passed legislation requiring the responsible
withdrawal of troops from Iraq, our efforts have been blocked by the President
and Congressional Republicans. As we press forward this month committed to
ending this war, it is imperative that reasonable Republicans, like Sen. John
Warner, acknowledge the urgent need to change course.”

I thought this was a VT blog? I would love to see more discussion on Vermont political issues and less on what's going on in Washington. There is plenty of coverage of that mess, and so few outlets for discussion on Vermont issues.

Welch is a traitor much like Leaking Leahy and Hugo Sanders. I'm sure they salivate each morning when more of our brave G.I.s become casualities in the war against terrorism. Hey, if it takes a few more bodies to ensure a leftist take-over of America, so be it! After all, Leahy had no problem with leaking classified info to his leftist pals in 1988, and none of the liberals in Vermont care that he was thrown off the Senate Foreign Relations committee for it - no lefties care that Sanders was a cowardly draft-dodger in the 60's - and God knows why the leftist lawyer Welch never served his country! Let's just all sit around, sing Kumbia and let our country go down the toilet!

Bubba, Why are we in Iraq? Do you have any idea?

Glad Welch is following Sen. Warner's lead.

The people responsible for the casualties in Iraq are the people who conceived of the war and implemented it--the Bush administration.

As for draft dodgers, Dick Cheney took 6 deferments--count them- 6!
G. W. Bush did not show up for duty while a member of the National Guard--something illegal in wartime.

You are a liar. Bush flew many times in an F-15 fighter plane for the Alabama National Guard. While not Vietnam, flying any military fighter is certainly more dangerous than what Bernie Sanders did (hide like the girly-man he is in Walden, living off welfare). What a class act!

Facts do not bear out what you say.
And how about Cheney's deferments; those are a matter of record also.

Dubbya didn't even show up at the guard base when he was required to. He was too busy snorting coke and spending his daddy's money.
