Mr. Fisher goes to Washington

State Rep. Mike Fisher, D-Lincoln, has been serving his Addison House district for six years now, long enough to know how things work in Montpelier. On Monday, he got to see how the other half lives the next rung up on the ladder -- in Washington D.C.

Fisher spent Tuesday inside the beltway speaking at a news conference, stopping by (and getting snubbed by) the White House, visiting with members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and hanging out with ex-fellow Montpeculiarite Rep. Peter Welch, D-Vt., and staffers for Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt.

The occasion for Fisher's D.C appearance was to represent Cities for Peace, a collection of elected folks from cities, towns and (in Vermont's case) state legislatures that have passed resolutions against the war. Fisher said by phone that 300 different political entities of passed such resolutions, representing some 150 million voters "That's half the country," Fisher exclaimed.

Fisher said his group marched to the White House and even alerted the folks at 1600 Pennsylvania of their pending visit. But when his group tried to deliver copies of the resolutions to the White House, they were turned away by a guard.

Seems the envelope represented a security risk, the guard told them.

"The group was frustrated by that, but I don't think we were surprised," Fisher said.

Also making the trip to Washington was South Burlington lawyer and activist Jim Leas.

Comments:
90 Jobs lost at IBM.

What happened to Jim = Jobs ??

Hold Jimmy responsible.

Whoa. Howbout asking the Legislature what it did this session to avoid that job loss? Or to make Vermont more hospitable to business in general? The Shumlin tax on VY was very disturbing to IBM -- so much so that Essex State Rep Tim Jerman -- A Democrat -- voted against it and voted against the override. That was a seriously anti-business signal by the Legislature.

"Also making the trip to Washington was South Burlington lawyer and activist Jim Leas."

Having Jimmy Leas in any group is a sign of lack of seriousness. The guy would go to Toledo, Ohio for the official International Goofball Convention if they'd let him spout off about impeachment.

Not related to this post, but to the comments on local job loss at IBM.
Job loss at Poughkeepsie and Fishkill was greater. So points about Vermont
and its attitudes toward business are not valid ones in this case.

The Legislature didn't run on the slogan "Jim = Jobs"

Governor Gridlock promised more jobs. Now he's making excuses for his lack of leadership.

Jimmy always blames other people for his short comings.

Forget about Mr. Fisher. I am astonished that our STATE legislators are so busy worrying about national politics, that they totally ignore issues important to VERMONT.

How about fixing this new prebate/rebate system that has totally thrown our right to privacy out the window!

I don't care about your privacy.

How about getting completely rid of the prebate/rebate system?

Fisher should have scaled the fence and run crazily across the front lawn. Would have been all over the news and his message would have been delivered.

Governor Gridlock sez:

"It ain't my fault. I didn't do anything!"

Fisher the hypocrite! Remember he was the one responsible for the House resolutions on impeachment, and troop withdrawals from Iraq. I noticed on TV last week that he was one of the dozen lawmakers that travelled to Fort Drum to show the troops how much he likes them. The only thing he accomplished with his time-wasting legislation was to tell the troops how much he doesn't support them...makes me want to puke.

Actually Fisher is standing up for the troops by saying that the military should not be used irresponsibly. And GW Bush has used the military in an irresponsible manner.

It’s only those on the far right who say that it’s unpatriotic to criticize Bush. True patriots know that it’s out duty to denounce Bush’s mishandling of our national security.

Fisher the "Weasal"

Actually, Fisher was anti-impeachment even though dozens of Vermont towns voted for the resolution. I wish he'd carried that message to WAshington.

Mike Fisher is one of the slimyest people in Montpelier. When I served there he was always snooping around, never did the job assigned to him...he sure has the folks in Lincoln duped (what Democrat doesn't) into thinking he is effective. Why they send him back, no one knows. Sure is a good representation of the Democrat Party mascot.

Nice. Make foolish and unfounded accusations against a State Rep ... and do it anonymously.

I'd say that's about as slimy as it gets.

How do you know the poster's accusations are foolish and unfounded? He or she did say he/she served in Montplelier, so I'm willing to give him/her the benefit of the doubt. And if you're going to criticize the poster for posting anonymously, why did you respond anonymously?

Blogs serve a purpose. You must agree or you wouldn't bother posting yourself. And one of those purposes is being able to give one's opinion anonymously.

Get a new Speaker and get something done. The Democratic majority is a joke - none of them want to go near the issues all of us hard working, taxpaying Vermonters care about (because they
are problems that are HARD to solve).

Oh,yeah~
