Getting in the spotlight

The news came over this afternoon from Rep. Peter Welch's office: "Welch joins Pelosi, congressional leaders to announce carbon neutral U.S. Capitol."

The release from Welch's office touts Welch's role in bringing his leaderhip on global warming to Congress and quotes Speaker Nancy Pelosi as saying, "Peter Welch has been a leader on the issue." He was the only non-chairman, non-leader listed as joining Pelosi in the announcement.
There he is, standing behind the speaker in the photo at right.

The speaker mentioned Welch a couple times during the news conference, Welch spokesman Andrew Savage said. Pelosi's own news release on the same event, however, doesn't mention Welch. Not even when she refers to plans for the House to purchase carbon offsets, as Welch did for his office earlier this year.

He gets a little recognition, but not quite that much.
At the news conference, House and Senate leaders announced the completion of the "Greening the Capitol" initiative, which includes operating the House in a carbon-neutral manner by the end of the 110th Congress and reducing the House's carbon footprint by cutting energy consumption by 50% in 10 years.

Comments:
The concept of Carbon neutral is ridiculous. If Welch and others in Congress really wanted to do something about Climate Change they would actually use alternative and renewable energy rather than simply paying someone who's working on developing it. It's an easy way for them to cleanse their consciences and claim the high road.

Not a fan of credits. They've been around for quite awhile too.

The idea is that non green consumer or producer provides a credit (money) to a green producer. The non-green entity because they provided funds can then claim they have some percentage of green usage all depending on how much money was spent. Similarly, the green producer can no longer claim that they have the same green output.

The whole setup ignores that the actual output from the non-green entity is unchanged.

The concept is supposed to provide funds to those who would build green energy generators and thereby finance green energy.

I looked into them at one time as I have green energy that I could "sell". I'm on the other side of the coin from those who are seeking to be "neutral".

The reality is that the amount of money within the credit does not provide for provisioning of what is being purchased.

and so the whole credit scheme is something that is almost good.

This is how that hypocrite Al Gore can run around telling everyone else how to live while at the same time having multiple homes, with the main residence consuming 30 times as much energy per year as the average US home. Oh, did I say running around? I meant flying around, using thousands and thousands of gallons of jet fuel.

This propaganda is all part of Terri's campaign to defeat Welch in '08.

She has not officially declared her candidacy yet -- but she's obviously laying the ground work.
