Mail bag

Yes, the election ads are practically popping out of the TV, but what about the stack of campaign fliers filling up the mailbox? Five in today's mail alone, including one for a state House candidate I'm not eligible to vote for.

Today's Vermont Republican Party offering appears to be banking on the notion that former Gov. Howard Dean has lost some luster in his home state. The premise of the flier is that if we don't vote Republican, our values, our security, our wallets are in peril. It says:

"Don't let the liberals win. If you don't vote, liberals like Hillary Clinton,
Howard Dean, Nancy Pelosi, and Ted Kennedy will take over Congress. They'll
raise taxes, erode our values and make it easier for terrorists to attack
America."

That paragraph sits next to photos of the four. Dean's photo depicts him in the midst of his infamous Iowa scream.

At least some Vermont Democrats seem to be banking on the idea that Dean still has positive sway here. Scudder Parker and Matt Dunne, to name a couple, have been happily out campaigning with Dean. We haven't, however, seen Peter Welch or Bernie Sanders standing side-by-side with Dean.

Is it a case of the underdogs (Parker and Dunne) being willing to take their chances with Dean, while Welch and Sanders don't want to take the risk? Probably nobody polls Dean's favorability numbers in his own state anymore, but what's your guess? Liability or life line?

Comments:
The only people who still have much support for Howard Dean are the ones who would have supported Scudder and Matt anyway. Dean lost most of his credibility with Vermonters when he spent most of his last term flying around the country raising money for his presidential bid. As for Sanders, he and Dean never got along very well anyway. While most of the big name Dems have been openly supportive of Sanders, Dean has been very quiet. He might tolerate Bernie in the Senate if they need him for a majority (or at least keeping the Republicans in the minority) but I doubt he really wants him there.

These comments about Howard Dean are silly. He is neither a "liability" nor a "lifeline". He is simply a former Governor who is trying to help some candidates and freinds.

It's too bad that the GOP apparently needs to attack Howard Dean. It would be far better if the GOP just stuck to the issues.

The worst part is that I can't burn the republican literature in the wood stove.

If they are going to send me something, they should send me something I can use.

cuz, heaven knows, Dean only has nice things to say about Republicans, right?

Isn't it bad enough that Bernie should have to spend all these months with Peter Welch? Give him a break.

For many years I have agreed with certain ideals in both parties - hence the independent title I have worn.

However as Union Family I have generally voted Democratic beliving they were our best bet to keep the UNION alive.

Hence the Union back Dean - However during our last strike to save our Health Benifits only - when some of our Union Members tried to apply for Unemployement the Dean admin informed them they were not unemployed and if they only chose to go back to work they would receive a paycheck.

Then we backed Peter Claville - who had no problem with UNION backing and then turned around and started the Burlington Telecom a non union city run phone company.

Well now we have backed Sanders and the Dems one more time and
would just like to know:
Why Bernie and Democrats Party headquarters decide to use a non union communication company.

Well as you can guess THREE TIMES and your out. My vote has changed and will continue to as long as good hard working people are being used and deceived to believe that the Dems and Bernie are for us when their actions state they are anything but!!!
