Spin out of control

The Douglas administration has an interesting mess on its hands with regard to the state job cuts and the recently discovered information that administrators were looking to soften the blow perhaps by simply changing the title of the jobs being cut.

If people are going to get in an uproar about cutting social workers, one solution is to call them something else. That was one possible solution.

That is among the things the Vermont State Employees Association discovered by seeking internal correspondences related to the job cuts. At first, the administration wanted to charge the union for messages, then relented, but said the union wasn't likely to find anything interesting.

The messages also reveal thoughts of keeping the governor away from the story of the job cuts and otherwise doing damage control.

If the governor were looking for a way to fuel the fire of the Democrats' argument that he has too many public relations people he just found it.

What context are these people talking about? Did they give the union documents about other subjects too? Sounds like they have very little to say to save face here. They're grabbing for something though.

finally we have clear cut proof of the totally self-serving mentality of the governor and his people. this should be PAGE ONE terri, not a blog item and not in the local section. when the governor and his top people are deliberately deceiving the legislature and the public about substantive decisions, that's news, and deserves a thorough examination.

i hope VSEA keeps the e-mails coming and the press finally holds this guy accountable for relentlessly putting his own interests first.

Hmm ... I guess I missed it Terri and Anonymous. I just plowed through the "greatest hits" of the e-mails over at Green Mountain Daily. The only PR people's names I saw were Jason Gibbs and Kim O'Leary, and neither of them were the authors of the emails but rather were the recipients or cc's.

So how, exactly, is this fuel for the Democrats to say the problem is the PR people? It seems this is merely SOP for politically appointed positions. Jason Gibbs' job is to provide the Administration's "spin", or position, on matters like this.

Looks like you're reaching. Or maybe trying too hard to "spin" this yourselves...

After all, it's not like they had to file a FOIA request just to get access to this info or anything while the "doog of hurl" continues to run the joint into the ground while he polishes his image as his crack staff struggles to preserve plausible deniability for doogie at taxpayer expense.

Jason Gibb initiated one of the emails requesting instruction from Mike Smith as to handle the PR problem of eliminating social workers. If you read other correspondence from HR people, it is evident that some discussion had occurred with admin people on how best to hide the "fact"(their quotes,not mine)that social workers were dismissed. Solution: fire and then rename the positions. Then concern: what if someone recognizes that a social worker in fact held the position last? What would they do then? Again seeking advice on how to handle that problem. Another expressed: How to distance this from Jim Douglas?

No cover-up involved at all. Right! Just keep spinning.

And still an outrageous number of PR people for Douglas at the expense of Vermonters who need services and could have them for the amount spent on Douglas's PR machine.

In California, Republican State Senator John Briggs, who had ambitions to be governor, proposed a statewide ballot initiative to prevent gay and lesbian people from teaching in public schools. The so-called Briggs Initiative also permitted the firing of any educator who was determined to be "advocating, imposing, encouraging or promoting" homosexuality. Briggs' vicious campaign to "defend your children from homosexual teachers" seemed to be heading for victory. One poll showed support for the Briggs Initiative leading 61% to 31%.

Many prominent politicians in the Republican and Democratic parties were hesitant about standing up to the bigotry of Briggs and his allies. That's when gay conservatives turned to former governor Ronald Reagan. At the time he was preparing to mount a campaign for the Republican presidential nomination in 1980. His advisors all thought he was committing political suicide when he decided to be an outspoken foe of the Briggs Initiative. Reagan declared that the initiative "is not needed to protect our children - we have the legal protection now."

Reagan went further, detailing the dangers of passing such a measure. "It has the potential for real mischief," the former governor explained. "What if an overwrought youngster, disappointed by bad grades, imagined it was the teacher's fault and struck out by accusing the teacher of advocating homosexuality? Innocent lives could be ruined."

Reagan's forceful opposition helped defeat the Briggs Initiative. In November 1978, voters rejected the Briggs Initiative by more than a million votes. Even in conservative Orange County, Briggs' home base, the initiative lost. Long-time Democratic gay activist David Mixner met with Reagan in 1978 to personally lobby him on the Briggs initiative, recalling, "Never have I been treated more graciously by a human being. He turned opinion around and saved that election for us," Mixner said. "We would have been in deep trouble. He just thought it was wrong and came out against it."

Log Cabin National Board Member and Los Angeles Chapter President Terry Hamilton said, "As a teacher, I am personally grateful for Reagan's courageous action to help stop the Briggs Initiative in 1978."

Coopy may be a bit homophobic but I think much more so is your cliched, typical demagogue. His postings exhibit all the classic elements. Clearly during his stay at the Jethro Bodine Institute of Higher Learning( a proud alum with a major in 5th Grade) he paid attention in his Introduction to Demagoguery 101 class. As he has learned from his apparent role models Hitler, Goebbels, Goring, et.al. in any good demagogic rant you need to:
1. Demonize — identifying others as a mortal threat. Often this involves scapegoating — blaming others for one's own problems. This is often advanced by using vague terms to identify the opposition group and then stereotyping that group. This allows the demagogue to exaggerate this group's influence and ascribe any trait to them by identifying that trait in any individual in the group. This method can be aided by constructing a false dilemma that portrays opposition groups as having a value system that is the polar opposite of one's own, as opposed to simply having different priorities. This method was incorporated by the Nazi regime to gain the general support of the public when it began to initiate its anti-Semitic policies.
2. Launch a personal attack — attempting to bring a discussion to an emotional level. For example, "Everyone is against me!", "Can't I be right just once?", "You're stupid!", or just the classic retort "Shut up!"
3. Tell half-truths — making statements that are true only in a strict and relatively meaningless sense.
4. Assert false authority — relying on the general authority of a person who is not proficient in the discussed topic. For example, "the professor read my book, and liked it very much," omitting the fact that it was a professor of chemistry who read a book on anthropology.
5. Present false dilemmas — assuming that there are only two possible opinions on a given topic. For example, "You're either with us or against us...," ignoring the possibility of a neutral position or divergence..
6. Mischaracterize the opposing position and then arguing against the mischaracterization.
7. Present loaded questions — posing a question with an implied position that the opponent does not have, e.g. "When did you stop taking bribes?"
8. Inject unrelated facts -bringing unrelated facts that sound in favor of the speaker's agenda. For example, marking a vegetable or cereal product as "cholesterol free". Since cholesterol is only found in animal products, such labeling does not actually distinguish this product from similar competitors.
Every post he makes embodies most of these elements. Recognize him for what he is. A left-wing demagogue. His only weapon is his big mouth.

In the spring and summer months of 1939, a number of planners -- led by Philipp Bouhler, the director of Hitler's private chancellery, and Karl Brandt, Hitler's attending physician -- began to organize a secret killing operation targeting disabled children. Beginning in October 1939, children with disabilities, brought to a number of specially designated pediatric clinics throughout Germany and Austria, were murdered by lethal overdoses of medication or by starvation. Some 5,000 disabled German infants, toddlers, and juveniles are estimated to have been killed by war's end.

Euthanasia planners quickly envisioned extending the killing program to adult disabled patients living in institutional settings. In the autumn of 1939, Hitler signed a secret authorization in order to protect participating physicians, medical staff, and administrators from prosecution; this authorization was backdated to September 1, 1939, to suggest that the effort was related to wartime measures. The secret operation was code-named T4, in reference to the street address (Tiergartenstrasse 4) of the program's coordinating office in Berlin. Six gassing installations for adults were eventually established as part of the Euthanasia Program: Bernburg, Brandenburg, Grafeneck, Hadamar, Hartheim, and Sonnenstein.

Beginning in January 1940, adult patients were selected by specially recruited T4 physicians for death. These doctors rarely examined the patients themselves, but often based their decisions on medical files and the diagnoses of staff at the victims' home institutions. Those selected were transported by T4 personnel to the sanatoria that served as central gassing installations. The victims were told they would undergo a physical evaluation and take a disinfecting shower. Instead, they were killed in gas chambers using pure carbon monoxide gas. Their bodies were immediately burned in crematoria attached to the gassing facilities. Ashes of cremated victims were taken from a common pile and placed in urns without regard for accurate labeling. One urn was sent to each victim's family, along with a death certificate listing a fictive cause and date of death. The sudden death of thousands of institutionalized patients, whose death certificates listed strangely similar causes and places of death, raised suspicions. Eventually, the clandestine Euthanasia Program became an open secret.

Hitler ordered a halt to the Euthanasia Program in late August 1941, in view of widespread public knowledge of the measure and in the wake of private and public protests concerning the killings, especially from members of the German clergy. According to internal T4 statistics, approximately 70,000 adult disabled patients were murdered during this initial gassing phase. However, this did not mean an end to the Euthanasia killing operation. The child Euthanasia Program continued as before.

Moreover, in August 1942, the killings resumed, albeit more carefully concealed than before. Victims were no longer murdered in centralized gassing installations, but instead killed by lethal injection or drug overdose at a number of clinics throughout Germany and Austria. Many of these institutions also systematically starved adult and child victims. The Euthanasia Program continued until the last days of World War II, expanding to include an ever wider range of victims, including geriatric patients, bombing victims, and foreign forced laborers. Historians estimate that the Euthanasia Program, in all its phases, claimed the lives of 200,000 individuals.

The Euthanasia Program instituted the use of gas chambers and crematoria for systematic murder. The personnel who participated in the Euthanasia Program were instrumental in establishing and operating the extermination camps Belzec, Sobibor, and Treblinka, later used to implement the "Final Solution."
