Making his move

Looks like former Ambassador Peter Galbraith is running for governor for sure.

The latest sign? Galbraith just sent out an e-mail to Democrats around the state announcing that he is giving "serious consideration" to becoming a candidate for governor and criticizing the incumbent Republican, Jim Douglas, for "six years of stagnation."

In the e-mail, Galbraith also discloses he has created a fund along with the state party called the Vermont Leadership Fund to, as he puts it, "support Democratic leaders on all levels around the state, and cultivate new leaders who will help build Vermont's future."

Party officials say the fund is not a candidate PAC, but clearly having Galbraith as the face of the fund is a signal he wants to be a player on the Vermont political scene this year. For a look at the full text of the e-mail, click HERE.

Galbraith, the son of the famed economist John Kenneth Galbraith, is best known as an international diplomat, as a U.S. ambassador to Croatia in the 1980s and a U.N. ambassador to East Timor in the 1990s. He's also written a well-regarded book on Iraq called "The End of Iraq." But the guy's got electoral politics in his blood: As a 20-something in the 1970s, he was chair of the Vermont Democratic Party.

There are other Ds thinking of taking the plunge, like Sen. John Campbell. But only Galbraith, with this move, has taken it to the next level.

Comments:
This is a happy day for Jim Douglas - Pollina and Galbraith will divide the anti-Douglas vote, and Jim will stick it to the legislative Democrats in the budget address today.

If you think class politics is playing a role in the presidential race, just wait until Galbraith and Pollina start going after each other.

Galbraith will get the votes of people like himself - people not born in Vermont, who have one or more advanced degrees, who don't need a regular job because they have a trust fund, and who think they can know what's best for Vermont because they are so much smarter than the rest of us.

Pollina will get the votes of people like himself - native Vermonters who are struggling to make ends meet day to day.

If Galbraith wants to make a difference in Vermont, he should run for the legislature and learn something about state politics before he tries to start at the top.

How much time has Galbraith actually spent in Vermont in the last ten years? He may have been in East Timor, Croatia, Iraq, and Norway more than in Vermont.

Where was Anthony born?

I'm a native Vermonter and I'll vote for Gilbrath.

"people not born in Vermont, who have one or more advanced degrees, who don't need a regular job because they have a trust fund,"

What? All three of them?

Are you like just jealous because other folks have the stones to make something of themselves?

Pollina is no native Vermonter!!!!!!

"native Vermonters who are struggling to make ends meet day to day."

I guess its only the native Vermonters who struggle?

Galbraith isn't running for anything. He set up a website so that people will send Dems money and not Pollina. So, he can either be a spoiler by running or a spoiler by not running. Either way, aren't Vermonters lucky?

Uh oh, that doesn't bode well. Pollina should hold off until 2010.

Uh oh, that doesn't bode well. Pollina should hold off until 2010.

Pollina says he's raised $100,000 in contributions and pledges. How much of that is real money, and how much is pledges?

Also, Pollina's campaign Web site

http://www.anthonypollina.com/donate.htm

notes that the maximum allowable donation is $2,000. I thought Tony the Prog was in favor of public financing and a low limit on campaign contributions? Guess those positions are now inoperative.

"Tony the Prog was in favor of public financing". So people who are in favor of public financing should just throw up their hands and give up? You can't change this pitiful system unless you win and you can't win unless you have a lot of money. The diffence with Pollina is that not a penny of it is from corporations while corporations RUN the other two parties.

"Uh oh, that doesn't bode well. Pollina should hold off until 2010."

Good idea. Douglas is due to retire. Pollina would have a better shot.

Pollina would have a better shot if he ran for Governor of Turkmenistan.

"If Galbraith wants to make a difference in Vermont, he should run for the legislature and learn something about state politics before he tries to start at the top."

You mean like Antnee did? When did he serve in the Legislature? When did he even serve as Selectman in Middlesex? When was he even on the town library committee?

Answer: never.

Wanna talk about people who want to start at the top? Antnee's your arrogant model.

Have a nice day.

And that does not get you votes.

The people who are criticizing Galbraith for not working his way up the ladder are probably the same ones who support Hillary Clinton because they say Barack Obama is not ready to be president.

I think it's hard to see Galbraith as anything but a sacrificial lamb, albeit a well-credentialed one. Chairman of the Democratic Party in the 1970's doesn't translate into name recognition in 2008, nor does experience as an ambassador.

As for his experience in elective politics, well, I guess that is the one thing he has going for him: He has exactly the same level as Pollina. Neither has ever won anything, and both are shooting for the highest state office as their first victory.

Anthony's frequent attacks on the Democratic Party as being no better than the Republicans are coming back to haunt him now. Big time.

Peter Galbraith - just another rich trustfunder looking for a "job". Kind of reminds me of Jim Guest.

26% of Douglas' contributions are from out of state.

Apparently even people outside the state see the appeal of Gov. Douglas.

Especially Corrections Corporation of America. They love them some Jimmy D.

Can you prove that statement?

Again, can you prove that. I thought not.

Dismissed.

BTW, I am just practicing to be more like Coop.

Do we have ANY state wide office holders that were born in Vermont?

Probably Dubie was.

Probably Tom Salmon was.

Douglas's filings with the secretary of state would appear to point to a love affair with Corrections corp. of America. That poster is right about that. Don't know about the love thing.

Here's an idea. How about Galbraith foregos collecting a salary for his two-year term? Tell Vermonters he'll give the $300,000 to road construction or something. Douglas would never do something like that, and if anyone can afford to do it, it's Galbraith. It's really the only way I can see him standing out in a very blase field.

The idea should be we want someone who wants to be paid because he is worth it and is in demand in the marketplace because he will bring significantly more value to the state than we will pay him. $300K is peanuts in the overall scheme of the financial problems we face.

We need to find the best talent available. Pay him/her a market rate and expect performance. You get what you pay for.

Is Anthony Pollina going to drop out now?

Only if there's a God.

"Only if there's a God."

Why, so the Dem can have a clear shot at losing?

It doesn't make a difference whether Pollina's in or out.
