The day after

Every time the governor delivers a State of the State or inaugural or budget address, here's the rub when it comes to seeking reaction: In the minutes immediately following the speech, nobody's had time to figure out exactly how they feel.

That's why House Speaker Gaye Symington delivered a pre-written speech of her own immediately afterward. That's why the opposition party in Washington does the same thing after a State of the Union.

Several people I talked to right after Douglas' speech weren't quite sure what to say. Not only was it too soon, but he hadn't said anything particularly outrageous or particularly awesome. Figuring out how you feel about the middle ground between those extremes is not always simple.

A day later, here's what Symington said of Douglas' address: "I found a number of aspects of his address yesterday very favorable."

Indeed, it seemed Douglas was trying hard not to tick anybody off. He gave a couple nods to climate change, lest anybody try to accuse him of not caring. He said he'd work with the Legislature on health care, housing. His new ideas - housing incentives for condos on the upper floors of downtown buildings, for example - were not earth-shattering but they were also not objectionable.

It makes one wonder - is this positioning for the November election? He's the governor who works with the Legislature. I know, some people will always be trying to look at everything through that lens.

- Terri Hallenbeck

Comments:
"A day later, here's what Symington said of Douglas' address: "I found a number of aspects of his address yesterday very favorable.""

Indeed, maybe that's because Douglas gave exactly the kind of speech -- both in style and in content -- that the moderate Democrat Gov. Dean would have given when he ruled Vermont for 10 years.

Nice try. As gops go, Doogie is among the best of a bad lot, but that don't make him Howard Dean.

Doogie gave a safe speech. He's just gonna tinker around the margins, pretend to do something and hope to weather the coming Dem Tsunami.

Whatever you say. In fact, he raised exactly the kind of issues Gov. Dean raised, and he delivered the address in the kind of mater of fact way that Dean always did.

There was never a hint of fiery oratory from Dean until the moment he left the Gov.'s office.

Indeed, the only time he ever raised his voice was to scold the left wingers in the Legislature.

I am a Democrat and I really liked
everything in the speech except the lottery. I may even vote for him.

Well, Pollina is an option.

How does the change in capital gains tax affect Shumlin and Symington undisclosed income?

Somethin' troublin ya, laffy boy?

"Ya mean like when he signed ACT-60 and The Civil Unions Bills into Law, little anonymous fella."

Guess you weren't paying attention, or are simply content to re-write history. Dean didn't invent the Civil Unions law. It wasn't his idea. The Vermont Supreme Court told the Legislature to invent it. After the Legislature passed it, Dean signed it under cover of darkness in a closet at the state house with no press around.

Learn the facts.

I don't have to. You made that decision when you chose not to vote the Democratic Ticket.

I just pointed out the obvious. You took the action. You did all the heavy lifting for me.

Like I keep tellin' you loons, that's why I like dealin' with you coalition of the clueless cretins. You consistently prove my points and take care of virtually everything for me.

From my perspective, what's not to like?

Not if Pollina's not running as a Democrat, nitwit.

Oy, you're thick.

Often tedious but always a pleasure.

You held the signing of the Civil Unions law as an example of Dean's liberality.

He was forced to sign it, and wasn't happy about it.

You lose.

How true. We worship and obey the Great and Wise Self-Annointed One.

So it is written, so it shall be done.

The Democratic Party in Vermont is in trouble.

Maybe the Governor is hoping that by proposing a series of moderate proposals that moderate Democrats could support, he can persuade them to buck the more partisan elements of the party leadership and work with him.

Together they can address some of the issues facing Vermonters despite what promises to be a lean budget year, and then both sides can campaign on their accomplishments.

"In 2006 the general election choice was between Jeffords the Republican and Flanagan the Democrat."

Actually, it was between Bernie Sanders, Independent and Richie Tarrant - the gop clown who pulled a full-court Mittwit spending 7million bucks "introducing" himself to Vermont only to make himself less popular than he was before we knew him, but if you wanna keep proving you don't know your ignorant, ill-informed butt from your elbow, I wouldn't dream of standing in your way.

That's entertainment.

"You made the statement that "Dems don't vote for GOPs."

Yeah, I did. It's also my position that cats don't have litters of puppies.

Ya wanna take exception with me on that score now, too, laffy boy?

"So, if in the 2006 general election, a Dem voted for Jeffords instead of Flanagan, he/she isn't a Dem?"

If you can produce an Official 2006Ballot with Jeffords running against Ed Flanagan, I'd be as interested in seeing it as the BFP and everyone else residing here in the real World.

We never tire of your Bizarro World Blarney.

"So, if in the 2006 general election, a Dem voted for Jeffords instead of Flanagan, he/she isn't a Dem?"

Yeah. They're also an idiot who doesn't know what day it is, they're also a moron who doesn't know what year it is, a damned liar or both.

"I am a Dem and I voted for Jeffords."

No, you're an idiot who not only doesn't know what day it is, you don't even know what year it is or who was on the 2006 ballot you allegedly used to vote on.

Keep it up, laffy boy. Like Bubble Boy's "Japan and Nazi Germany posed no threat to us during WWII" shtick, this is far and away the best material you've come up with yet for your ignorant gop song and dance act.

Always a pleasure.

Excuse my ignorance, but is Pollina going to run a stealth campaign? He did announce, right? If so, where the hell is he? No response to the Governor's speech last week? If you're going to run, then get the hell out there and start running. The silence is deafening.

Exactly.

Deb Markowitz for Governor.

In general, no. When it's Bernie against Tarrant, absolutely.

Nice try, nitwit.

Gee, laffy boy, what happened to:

"In 2006 the general election choice was between Jeffords the Republican and Flanagan the Democrat."?

Couldn't ya find a 2006 ballot pitting Jeffords against Flanagan, little fella?

Ya didn't think the 6th time will be the charm?

That's your anchor, schmuck. You forged it and I'm gonna see that it stays fastened securely to your ignorant, ill-informed, "don't know who the hell's on the ballot or what the folk day or year it is" nitwit neck of yours.

Rest easy, little fella, even though you've lost your flippin' mind, marbles and whatever semblance of a clue you may once have possessed, you'll never be without your anchor as long as I continue to draw breath and update my will on a regular basis.

"You complete idiot. I made a typo. You know I was talking about 2000."

Well, at least ya didn't go for the "that was another anonymous nitwit" defense again. I'll give ya that much.

Unfortunately, that's not gonna get ya off the hook, either, little fella.

No, I don't. No I don't. No, you can't.

Congrats. At least ya completed something, sport. I'll write ya a note if the folks don't believe ya.

Don't mention it.

You're not quite the idiot bubbles is for continuing to stick with his ludicrous "Japan and Nazi Germany were no threat to us during WWII and nothing like the threat Islamo-Fascism poses to us today song and dance, but ya do edge him out in frequent liar miles, little fella.

As is your custom, you've been making the same bogus, brain-dead charge since yesterday, if not longer, schmuck. It's not my job to bail your ignorant, ill-informed, sorry sack of gop-slop butt out.

You dug your own grave. Go fall in it and pull the dirt in behind ya.

"Now, instead of avoiding, defend your own statement that a Dem can't vote for a Republican."

Avoidance, eh? Not a prayer, nitwit. I wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire and your sorry, ignorant, fundamentally-dishonest butt is engulfed in flames.

I have no intention of avoiding your self-immolation.

To the contrary, I'm gonna watch ya burn for awhile, walk the Dog, have a nice hot cup of Cocoa, watch KO, take a leak and come back and watch ya burn some more before settling in for a good night's sleep.

If I wake up in the middle of the night, I'll take a leak, maybe look in on ya, poke the embers and throw another log or two on ya and go back to bed.

I wouldn't want ya to catch a chill, little fella.

Shine on brightly, schmuck. You're quite insane.

Dismissed.

Hah. It's obvious. You made an ingnorant generalization and you know it. You said that if you vote for a Republican you can't be a Dem.

Am I the only one who wonders whether this blog and threads like this are a symptom of an overly-politicized public atmosphere here in Vermont?

When every decision -- from the car you drive, to the food you eat, to the clothes you wear -- becomes a political issue is it any wonder that the extremists on both ends of the political spectrum become so partisan and venemous?

"Am I the only one who wonders whether this blog and threads like this are a symptom of an overly-politicized public atmosphere here in Vermont?"

Yeah, I'm sure you're the only person in Northern New England that's occurred to, pal. You're to be commended for your firm grasp of the obvious.

Is this where you give me the ole. "Cheer up! Things could always be worse." song and dance?

Yeah? And? SFW. Things usually can be worse. That don't make 'em good.

If everybody walks around whistlin' a happy tune and tellin' themselves and everybody around them to cheer up, things could always be worse nothin' ever changes for the better and this Country and this State needs some change for the better.

What precisely do you propose we do?

Look around you for Christ Sake. What do you see?

It's MLK's Birthday. Had he not been shot, he would have celebrated his 79th Birthday today. Instead, we're a couple months shy of commemorating the 40th anniversary of his death.

Again, look around. Do you really think things have changed for the better over that period of time?

Evidently, Willard Romney bought himself enough Mittwits to win the Michigan Primary.

The schmuck embodies everything that's wrong with this Country.

What do you propose we do, ignore it and hope it goes away?

"When every decision -- from the car you drive, to the food you eat, to the clothes you wear -- becomes a political issue is it any wonder that the extremists on both ends of the political spectrum become so partisan and venemous?"

One man's partisan venom is another man's passion.

In a perfect world, I'd happily do things differently.

We don't live in a perfect world. One look at the illegitimate trash in the White House should tell ya that.

It's enough to make Pollyanna, Mary Poppins and Little Miss Sunshine suicide bombers

Hopefully, we can lose the trash and clean up the mess they've made of everything before the sunshine girls get their mitts on some some C-4.

Dazzle me with the array of non-existent evidence you have to substantiate that slop, little fella.

As always, I'm lookin' forward to your lunacy.

Always a pleasure.

""There was never a hint of fiery oratory from Dean until the moment he left the Gov.'s office."

And your proof of this is......?"

Um, from listening to every single one of his State of the State addresses?

Jeezuz you're retarded.

You said that if a person voted for a Republican they're not a Dem.

So, if a Dem voted for Jeffords instead of Flanagan, they're not a Dem?

Answer the question.

Evidently ya didn't hear me the first time, little anonymous nitwit fella.

"And your proof of this is......?"

Do ya need me to say it again?

You're gonna have to do a wee bit better than ask me to take your word for it, shmendrik.

The one thing you've managed to prove without a shadow of a doubt over the past two months is that you're ignorant, ill-informed, fundamentally-dishonest trash who doesn't know what day or year it is and can't distinguish a D from a P or your ass from his elbow.

Shmendrik, I wouldn't take your word for it if ya told me it was dark outside. You've got less credibility than dick cheney, punk.

Every time I point out the utter stupidity, factually-suspect and complete cluelessness of whatever trash you've come up with - in other words, every time you post - it's somehow always my fault that you don't know your ass from your elbow and can't back up your ignorant trash with anything remotely resembling factual evidence.

You're not exactly a master of disguise any more than you're in command of the facts. You're ignorant trash, schmuck. You're no more convincing than Rudy's comb-over.

Yeah, little fella, I remember. I said it about ten of fifteen times.

Again, just which part of that is givin' you trouble?

"So, if a Dem voted for Jeffords instead of Flanagan, they're not a Dem?"

"Answer the question."

I did. You're not. Do ya need me to say it again?

When did Jeffords run as a Dem, little fella?

Answer the question.

Dismissed.

Here we go. Douglas gets criticized for his lack of oratory in his recent address. I point out that Dean's speeches as Gov. were also matter-of-fact and not fiery oratory. You ask for proof. I say because I listened to them. And now you want proof of that, too. Do you also want proof that you got up this morning?

You say that if a Dem votes for a Republican, he/she isn't a Dem. I posed the question, well, what if a Dem chose to vote for Jeffords instead of Flanagan? You keep responding to this with a question that doesn't answer the question.

In other words, ya don't have anything and ya just want me to take your word for it.

Nice try. That's a good one, little no tabs for nitwits fella.

I remember them, too.

"You say that if a Dem votes for a Republican, he/she isn't a Dem."

Yeah, 70-80 times. That's gonna have to do, little fella.

"I posed the question, well, what if a Dem chose to vote for Jeffords instead of Flanagan?"

Yeah, ya also gave me the wrong year over and over and over again, little fella, then claimed it was just a typo and called me an idiot 'cause you made the same typo over and over and over again.

That said, OK, I'll make it '81.

Then, like you, they're not a Democrat.

Remember that, little fella.

See it. Learn it. Live it.

Dismissed.

That's it.

"You keep responding to this with a question that doesn't answer the question."

Who reminds ya to breath, schmuck, and why do they bother?

"Then, like you, they're not a Democrat."

You're wishin' won't make it so. You were wrong then, you're wrong now, and you'll be wrong forever.

"You're wishin' won't make it so. You were wrong then, you're wrong now, and you'll be wrong forever."

Let's review the facts, little factually-challenged fraudulent fella.

Once you eventually figured out what year you were talking about, who was on ballot, what party they represented and what office they were running for, you tell me you voted for Jeffords running as a republican before he saw the error of his ways despite the fact that you were then a "loyal dues-paying Democrat" and when I inform you that by definition, you're not a Democrat, your actions prove that you're still a loyal Democrat and I have no proof that you're not a loyal Democrat despite the fact that you just confessed to voting for a republican.

Apart from the fact that your own confession provides me with all the gift wrapped evidence that you had just voted republican, what the hell are you talking about?

On what basis do you make such a ludicrous claim, little fella? Are ya tryin' to claim I didn't read ya your rights or denied you access to a lawyer and kept interrogating you despite your request for a lawyer?!!

They've got less on the schmuck that killed Michelle Gardner Quinn, little meshuggah fella.
