Gonzales inquiry

This just came over the wires. Alberto Gonzales' own former people are investigating whether he misled Congress.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Justice Department said Thursday it is investigating
whether resigning Attorney General Alberto Gonzales lied or otherwise misled
Congress last month in sworn testimony about the Bush administration’s domestic
terrorist spying program.
The inquiry, confirmed by Justice Department Inspector General
Glenn A. Fine, comes three days after Gonzales abruptly announced he was
stepping down despite months of vowing he would remain on the job.
In a letter to Senate Judiciary Chairman Patrick Leahy, who
two weeks ago asked for the inquiry, Fine said his investigators believe they
“will be able to assess most of the issues that you raise in your letter.”
Leahy had also asked Fine to look into whether Gonzales
gave inaccurate testimony about the firings of several U.S. attorneys last year.
“You identified five issues and asked that we investigate whether the
statements made by the attorney general were intentionally false, misleading, or
inappropriate,” Fine wrote in his four-paragraph response to Leahy in the letter
dated Thursday. “The OIG has ongoing investigations that relate to most of
the subjects addressed by the attorney general’s testimony that you identified,”
Fine told Leahy.

Comments:
Gonzales said he plans to resign on September 17. Congress reconvenes on Tuesday, September 4. There would be time for the House and Senate to impeach Gonzales before his resignation date. How about it, Peter Welch?

And impeach Shumlin while you're at it.

Yes, please, somebody impeach Shumlin.

I'll drink to that!

Gov Jim Douglas is equally as partisan - and if you think not, you are very naive!

Impeach Douglas!

No - impeach Shumlin AND Symington!

Unfortunately, the Democratic party in this state no longer believes in ballot boxes. We're supposed to just impeach everyone we don't like.

I give Symington a lot of credit for trying to avoid getting sucked into Shumlin's political games this session. She clearly understands the concept of a ballot box. Shumlin does not.

So - lets impeach Shumlin and save Symington for the next election.

As they say - Eagles may soar high, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.

I agree she's better than Shumlin. But not that much. She didn't say "no" to the impeachment zealots. She let them have their vote in the House, after she pretty much apologized to them in advance for her no vote. She could have told them, "No, I don't care what Shumlin did, there will be no impeachment vote in the House. Instead, she abdicated leadership and handed the keys to the House to a bunch of sweaty, dirty zealots.

She DID get sucked into Shumlin's games. The Vermont Yankee slam tax to support the global warming bill? His idea. She resisted (good). He insisted. She went along (bad). She could have put her foot down and stood up to him and said "no, we're going to get killed for this." Instead, she went along and rode that train right off the bridge to the disastrous veto override session. I'd call that getting sucked in to his political games.
