Political notes from Free Press staff writers Terri Hallenbeck, Sam Hemingway and Nancy Remsen

Down in D.C.

Impeachment fans might want to tune into C-SPAN this afternoon and see what Vermont's freshman congressman has to say on the House floor about their meeting with him last weekend.

Rep. Peter Welch will make a statement several minutes after the last vote of the day, anticipated at approximately 4-5:30 p.m., according to his staff.

If by chance you're one of those people who has other things to do at the time of day, the statement will also be posted on www.welch.house.gov under "multimedia" Wednesday.

- Terri Hallenbeck

Comments:
I don't suppose anyone watched here in Vermont or any of Welch's colleagues in DC..ho-hum

What on earth would be the point???
To See if his girl Gaye Symington had magically shown up?

The impeachment movement is dead. Hopefully the supporters of this movement will find themselves some jobs this summer and move on with their lives.

You need Times Select but check out this article.

Until reading that, I believed that Bush had not committed a crime and therefore should not be impeached. However, I understand that violation of the FISA is a felony. Therefore, Bush should be impeached.

(I was one of the people who argued against his impeachment in the other discussion.)

Forget Bush. Sanders has just voted to leave our troops in Iraq with no further funding. Now THIS is not impeachable, just a solid case of TREASON. Fortunately, patriots of both parties defeated this trash. Wonder how this makes our Vermont soldiers feel!

Why should we forget Bush? He is guilty of a felony. This is a more significant crime (violation of the FISA) than perjury. He should be impeached.

Bubba, Bush vetoed a spending bill. Do you want to impeach him for that?
(Treason is an impeachable offense, btw.)

Treason is lying to all Americans about your reasons for going into Iraq in the first place. Watch the Bill Moyers piece on how the Bush Administration used the press to advance its own cause. Now this is treasonous.

Bill Richardson for President and
Jeb Spaulding for Governor.

Dennis Carver for Atty General

Bill Moyers hates America. Anyone that would believe anything this pathetic fairy says is as big a fool.

anyone who uses the word "fairy" as a pejorative is a big fool.

Bill Moyers asks hard questions of the Bush administration. That means he hates America?

Wow. That's a pathetic point of view.

You have absolutely no evidence that Bush knowingly violated FISA.

You say that violating FISA is a "more significant" crime than perjury. So, what you're saying is, impeachment depends upon a particular person's view (yours) of how "siginificant" a crime is. You know what that's called? It's called a personal political decision. It's your personal decision that Bush is a "bigger" criminal than Clinton, so therefore we should impeach Bush.

Yeah, right. That is a perfect example of how subjectively political the "impeach Bush" movement is. You won't admit it, but it is based on your political preferences.

And this is giving you the benefit of the doubt that Bush knowingly violated FISA. There's room for disagreement there. The fact that you say Bush committed a felony demonstrates that you wouldn't even be qualified to sit as a juror in a case in the US criminal justice system involving the theft of a candy bar. Jurors who say someone is "guilty" before the trial begins, are kicked out of the courtroom. Ever hear of the 5th Amendment?

Oh, and by the way, Mr. Naive, if we impeached every politician who, as you state, "used the press to advance his own cause," we'd have to impeach Bernie Sanders and every other politician, and every President in the history of the US republic. Name a politician who hasn't used the press to advance his (or her) own cause, please. Even your hero Liza Earle does that on a regular basis.

Nice try.

When I said that Bush has committed a significant crime and there should be just as much (I believe more) outrage as there was at Clinton's perjury. That's all I'm saying. They are both criminals. Clinton was impeached, why shouldn't Bush be?

Also, when I say that Bush committed a felony, I am referring to the Michigan judge who ruled as such. This is not my opinion, it's that of the judge who heard the case.

I agree with your last point. So far, the only ground for impeachment I see is the violation of FISA.

Let's concentrate on ending the war and electing Bill Richardson.

Richardson has woman problems, which will come out if he advances any further.

That never seemed to bother the left's favorite predator, Bill Clinton, did it?

Lots of politicians have "woman problems" (even some in Vermont) that doesn't seem to keep them from getting elected.

What is Richardsons "woman problem"?

or the Predator Tom Foley?

Or the Predator Newt Gingrich?

Tom Foley?

I think you mean Mark Foley.

Tom Foley was the crooked former dimocrat House Speaker forced from office in the usual dimocrat way - corruption, lying, stealing, etc. etc. Replaced by Newt which got us welfare reform, balanced budget, etc.

Gingrich was effing his secretary in the office, cheating on his wife, and extorting money from publishing companies.

He was forced to quit after the tenth scandal hit his office.

But what is Richardsons "woman problem"?

Bubba is funny in his naivete. All Democrats are crooked. All Republicans are angels -- even the ones who cheat on their wives and extort money from publishers. Gingrich hounded his predecessor out of office and then was revealed to be just as morally and legally corrupt, if not worse. Howabout we recognize the obvious fact that, largely because of the influence of money in politics, ALL successful politicans are crooks and liars, not just "the other side." If we start by accepting this premise, maybe we can get somewhere, like eliminating the profession of "career politician" -- of which Gingrich is one.

Absolutely, Career Politicians should go. Career High school teachers should go too, we need people who have career experience teaching young adults. And by the way we really need to close Bellows Falls Middle School - ASAP.

If the NEA teachers union was busted then many more good teachers would be available. The union bosses will fight to the death the hiring of any people with career experiences that could provide invaluable learning experiences to students. I can even remember several years ago in Glover when the union establishment threatened strikes because volunteers were trying to help the school system WITHOUT PAY! Just how low can any union and their slugs sink?

I totally agree - the schools are going in the toilet since the unions have a mafia like hold on the system.

Angelo Dorta's hysterical reaction to any talk of cost-cutting in education, and his scare tactics about hurting "education quality," are shameful. We spend something like twice as much per pupil as the national average. Twice as much as Maine and New Hampshire. And our kids aren't twice as smart. There's room to trim and consolidate. But when you start talking like that, Dorta shrieks that you're trying to hurt the kids. All he's doing is desperately trying to protect union jobs. That's understandable, but don't say we're trying to hurt the kids.

The kids are not the whole problem.

Regional special ed schools.
