New guy seated

Jon Anderson became Rep. Jon Anderson, D-Montpelier, on Monday and took his seat in the Vermont House of Representatives at 11:10 a.m. today.

The man Anderson replaced -- Francis Brooks -- announced his arrival to House members. Brooks resigned the Legislature to become sergeant at arms at the Statehouse.

Anderson didn't even get to sit down. The House promptly recessed so members could caucus on two education bills, so district-mate Rep. Warren Kitzmiller, D-Montpelier, guided him down to Room 11 for the party's briefing. Ready or not, Anderson will be casting his first votes by the end of the day.

Hmmm...a "d" from Montpelier...probably not too hard to predict ALL of his votes. Oh well, what's another left-wing pinhead or two.

Actually, Anderson may be closer to the Republicans, and to development interests, than a lot of people think. It will be interesting to see whether he is able to hold on to his seat in next year's election. Anderson came in 5th out of 5 candidates when the Montpelier Democratic Caucus ranked the candidates on the list from which Douglas would make the appointment. If Montpelier Mayor Mary Hooper (who came in first in the caucus vote) decides to run in the Democratic primary, Hooper could very well push Anderson into third place, behind herself and Warren Kitzmiller.

Maybe Jon Anderson will pull a Joe Lieberman - if he loses the Democratic primary, he'll run for re-election as an independent. He just has to make sure he's not in any pictures getting kissed by Jim Douglas.

This session will be long remembered as the period during which the Dem majority grew so big, they started to eat their own. The Speaker's inability to push any meaningful legislation forward - despite controlling some 90-100 votes - is remarkable. Maybe the Dems should spend less time trying to purge moderates from the party, and actually focus on trying to legislate for once. The moderates might help the lefties actually craft legislation that works and can pass. Last 2 legislative elections have been about philosophy and issues, I believe this election will be about competence and results. Anderson is a good addition to the House.
