Presidential consumption

Jim Barnett, the erstwhile head of the Vermont Republican Party who's now consumed with all things John McCain, returned to the Statehouse today to drum up support for his presidential candidate. Barnett is working for McCain's campaign in New England.

He wondered when we'd start covering the presidential primaries. Huh? I said. Didn't he hear that whole gobs of the public were choking over how much attention is already being paid to a race that's two years away? He hadn't. When your job is to promote one of the candidates, you begin to think that's what everybody's thinking about, 24/7.

Standing outside the House chamber as members were coming in Tuesday morning, the boy from Barre showed what happens when you leave home and start seeing how things are in other states. Barnett commented that the Vermont Legislature really needs an electronic voting board in each chamber. I have seen such a scoreboard in the Texas Legislature. Nice ornate room, much like ours, with a big ugly electronic board up front. I'm sure it's very efficient, but it's like having faux-wood paneling in your Victorian home.

He was - not by me - accused of turning into a liberal. Which he denied.

Comments:
He sounds as clueless and out of touch as ever.

McCain, Giuliani, and Romney are all losers - the Republican race will get interesting in the fall once Newt Gingrich and Fred Thompson get in.

Must have sent wonderboy up here to beat the bushes for McCain's ailing warchest. Maybe Jimmy D. will contribute $10.

McGiuliamney

Where's trenchcoat Bubba?

How does President Thompson sound to you pathetic little Hillary sycophants? Sends shudders up your spines, doesn't it? Hahahahahahahah!

Vermonters will surely elect Hillary Clinton.

Are you joking? After her absurd stance on the tire burn?

We need Obama to be our next president.

Bubba getting all excited about Fred "Yes, I'm another GOP actor" Thompson. Put your eggs in that basket Bubba. F#$%ing Republicans are so gullible.

As for McCain and Barnett. Can you say "I support more troops in Iraq." Dems will clean up in Vermont in '08.

We all know what a loser Hillary is; Edwards couldn't carry his home state; and now Barak Hussein Obama's fantasies and lies are being uncovered daily! (Turns out he is just another crooked Chicago-area pol) Where is Crazy Howard when we need him!!!Hahahahahaha!!!

Come on Bubba, you can do better than that. How about some gay bashing or some anti-Semitism?

Go ahead and call Edwards a faggot.

Come on! Don't hide the true Bubba!

I'll be Barnett wishes McCain would settle on a position so it could be promoted. He learned from Clinton that you have to be all things to all people to win.
The Clintons are slick enough to pull it off and McCain's a wannabe

How quickly people forget that McCain outpolled Gore in Vermont back in early 2000.

While character and service and common sense and national pride likely mean not a whit to much of the vitriolic crew that post such erudite comments here, the same cannot be said for regular Vermonters and voters. McCain is precsiely what this country needs -- fiscally conservative, strong on national defense, willing to corroborate to address domestic problems, with a both a tenacious and humorous streak.

And, no, I'm not Barnett, notwithstanding my handle.

McCain is fine but the best president would be Richardson from New Mexico - but we know the best man doesn't win!

Let's see, if Barnett persuades Jim Douglas to support McCain for President, then Douglas can run for re-election along with a presidential candidate who says "we are starting to turn things around in Iraq" and that what Congress is doing is setting "a date certain for surrender." With a Republican candidate like that at the top of the ticket, perhaps any Democrat, even Peter Shumlin, could defeat Douglas next fall.

Which puts you in the position of actively rooting AGAINST military success for the U.S. in Iraq. Is that where Vermonters truly want to be ("Yahoo, the U.S. lost and Iraq has plunged into chaos!!")? God forbid that things actually improve over there with a new and effective strategy being implemented by Gen. Petraeus (finally).

Military success? A whole lot of Generals have stoodup and said that there is no military solution to this war -- including General Colin Powell.

"'I think the more accurate way to approach this right now is to concede that... this insurgency is not going to be settled, the terrorists and the terrorism in Iraq is not going to be settled, through military options or military operations. It's going to be settled in the political process."

Brig. Gen. Donald Alston, the chief U.S. military spokesman in Iraq

"There is no military solution to a problem like that in Iraq, to the insurgency of Iraq,"

Gen. David Petraeus

Symington not Shumlin should run for Governor - its time for a woman.

The GOP will nominate Romney for president which is representative of today's extremist slant of the Republican party.

For some reason, I just don't see the rethugs standing up behind a person from Mass...

Bubba:

Still crowing about your savoir, Fred Thompson?

"Everyone knows he's conservative and has come out strongly for the things that the pro-family movement stands for," Dobson said of Thompson. "[But] I don't think he's a Christian; at least that's my impression," Dobson added, saying that such an impression would make it difficult for Thompson to connect with the Republican Party's conservative Christian base and win the GOP nomination.

Oh boo hoo Bubba. Who ya gonna call now?

Getting dissed by Dobson should be a blessing!
