Impeach Part II

Following Saturday's vote to push for an impeachment resolution, House Speaker Gaye Symington said today she's unmoved in her decision not to spend time on the issue.

"They're frustrated with me," she said of her fellow Democrats. "I think it's hard to understand outside the building how little time there is to get things done."

It's not just the time spent debating the issue, but the emotional distraction, she said. Once you throw the flaming torch of impeachment into the middle of the room, the parties retreat to their own corners. It's hard to come back the next day, she said, and go back to working together.

She contended, too, that focusing on impeachment might not produce the quickest route out of Iraq.

Does it matter to her that the governor would hammer the Legislature for debating impeachment? "The governor hammers us no matter what we do," she said.

Speaking of the governor and his hammer, he'll be bringing his "accountability" tour to Essex on Thursday. 6:30 p.m. at the Grange Hall on Route 15 in Essex Center. I'm not sure you'll find that these are widely publicized events. A press release about it went out about 5 minutes after I inquired today.

Comments:
If the hotheads on the Democratic State Committee who want the Legislature to spend its time on impeachment rather than state government issues such as taxes, education, and health care don't calm down soon, they could wake up in January 2009 and find that Steve Adams is the Speaker of the House.

heh. good luck with that.

the legislative repubs couldn't organize themselves out of a paper bag.

Is Steve Adams as tepid as Symington?

The proof is in the result.

Gaye has built a solid majority in the house.

Adams and the R's have lost seats every election since the civil unions backlash.

One reason the R's lost legislative seats in 06 is that Jim Barnett was so fixated on electing Rich Tarrant, Martha Rainville, and Jim Douglas that he did a terrible job recruiting legislative candidates.

The R's may not pick up many House seats in 08, but they certainly won't let 30+ Dems have a free ride next cycle.

Ok, well you can blame Barnett, but if Symington had sat back and waited for John Copans to recruit candidates for the Dems, she never would have won the majority back.

Symington took the reigns, recruited candidates, worked hard and built a majority.

You can blame Richie, or Barnett or some mysterious force that invaded people's brains and forced them to vote Democratic -- at the end of the day, Symigton is where she is because she campaigned hard, brought her case to the voters and won.

You can call her tepid. But members of the House of Reps call her "Speaker" -- because the all agree ... she's earned it.

Lets hope not, because Steve Adams couldn't write legislation to safe his life.

Let's just see the end result when the session is over.

Gaye's won seats in the house three elections in a row.

With Steve Adams and Robert Roeper leading the GOP, Gaye is sure to continue her winning streak.

Gaye Symington for Governor.

Symington is wasted as the speaker.
