Visions of Dean

It had to happen. Someone was going to run for president in 2008 and, in their words and actions, conjure up memories of former Gov. Howard Dean's ill-fated 2004 bid for the White House. And some big-media entity was going to quickly label the dude the "Howard Dean of 2008."

This week, Time Magazine bestowed that honor on John Edwards, the former North Carolina Senator and 2004 Democratic vice presidential nominee.

Okay, in some ways, the shoe fits. Time points out that Edwards, now a Washington outsider, has worked to present himself as a "bold, straight-talking candidate, as Dean did in 2003." And Time notes that Edwards recently gave a fiery speech calling on elected Democrats to show more "courage" in questioning President Bush's troop surge plan for Iraq and has become a champion for universal health care. Sound familiar? For the full Time story, click HERE.

The story also notes that, like Dean, Edwards is drawing support from the blog world, noting that in an on-line "poll" conducted by the well-regarded lefty Daily Kos blog, Edwards was Numero Uno, garnering 26 percent support to Senator Barack Obama's 25 percent.

The magazine couldn't resist tossing in a few golden oldie zingers about Dean. "No, no, the former vice presidential nominee hasn't replaced his Southern drawl with a Northeastern screech," the article said while pointing out the similarities between the two men.

So does Edwards remind you of Dean? What do you think of the rest of the Democratic -- and Republican -- presidential field as we get ready for the 2008 presidential nomination dance?

Comments:
It is truly sad that the campaigning has started already. By the time November 2008 rolls around we'll all be so apathetic and sick of politics we probably won't even vote. People think they need to declare so far in advance to get name recognition, but in reality they are opening themselves up to critique sooner. The real loser is the american people, who have to put up with all the pre-campaigning. The only ones who benefit are those that sell the ads on TV and radio. The real farce is our electoral system that make some peoples votes count more than others. We should do away with the electoral system now that our next president wins by the popular vote, not the electoral.

People who like John Edwards should take a look at this posting on The Nation blog about Edwards and Iran:

Yes, Edwards may have renounced his vote for the Iraq war and supports universal health care, but his position on Iran is troubling and dangerous, and thus raises questions about his qualifications to serve as the person to whom we should trust the leadership of American foreign policy.

I'd like to see one of the Dems draft California's Maxine Waters to run with them. Oddly enough, she's one of the only ones with any balls in the entire Congress. At least you get a straight answer.

We've already got Joe Biden running. You want someone with balls, vote for Biden.

Yeah. Biden has balls all right. It's the loose lips part I worry about. Secretary of Defense maybe (if you don't give it to Chuck Hagel as a show of bipartisan love).

The very best candidate is Gov.
Richardson - but being the best is not how it works in national politics!

Edwards is little more than a southern version of Dean. Look at the vile, foul-mouthed, Christian-hating bloggers that "resigned" from Edwards campaign only after Bill O'Reilly and Michelle Malkin spotlighted them. Like Dean, Edwards was too cowardly, and too beholden to the far-left bigots to do the right thing himself. Peas in a pod.
