From the too weird department

This is just too weird to believe. But I'm told it's true.

Ed Flanagan, the state senator who survived 18 hours hanging upside down in the freezing cold after a car accident in November 2005, went off the road and flipped upside down in his PT Cruiser this morning.

Thanfully, this time was a lot better than last. A South Burlington police officer was right behind him. No 18-hour wait for someone to discover him. No unconsciousness. No real injuries - just a cut on his hand from pulling himself out of the car when it was over.

A short while ago, he told Free Press Staff Writer Vickie Welch, "I remember taking that turn, I remember beginning to go around that bend and the next thing I remember, honest to goodness, is being upside down and trapped in the car."

If anybody's looking for a Christmas gift for Ed, a CCTA bus pass might be just the thing.

Comments:
This instinctively makes me wonder what type of tires he is running on his vehicle about this time of year: i.e., are they so-called all season radials or quality snow tires. If it is the former, then I would suggest the latter and also suggest he either consider employing a driver -- especially when, if he is heading to the state house, car pooling is not possible to get were he needs to go or consider using the Link Express bus and also staying over in Montpelier during the week while the legislature is in session.

Going 40 in that exit would explain a lot. He ought to be retested.

Yes, if he was indeed going 40 MPH in the ramp, then that is certainly too fast going into those ramps like that. After my earlier comment was posted yesterday, I noticed a report were it was mentioned the road was clear and dry at the time. Either he has a lead foot or, for one reason or another, he was not paying close enough attention to where on the road he was at the time and what his speed was compared to what the posted and safe speed for the zone is or both.
